Assaulting the Second Hub; Pulsating Light Trap Core

Post by Nighthand » Sat Jul 01, 2006 10:36 pm

Nighthand and the rest of them arrived in what would set off memories in Nighthand's head, memories of their assault on Kurai, of their treks through jungles. The field was, as advertised, Level 30 wood elemental. It couldn't be more obvious.

They stood in a small clearing, dense underbrush and giant trees all around them. The sky was clear, a few high scudding clouds passing by on a wind they didn't feel down below. Sunlight filtered through the leaves and lent the forest floor a dimmed, but still visible appearance. It was an early summer atmosphere, warm but not hot. Birdcalls filled the air as the avians squawked at the interference in their daily routines. A small figure knelt in the bushes, watching them with small eyes....

Nighthand blinked. A figure? He looked, but there was nothing but some hanging moss and the reflection of light off leaves. He could see how it would have looked like a person, but wasn't. Shrugging to himself, he looked around, Hoping Tokki would join them soon. There was only one path, and he set out along it. If the long arm of water couldn't figure out where to go, well, she wouldn't be much help...

”Let's go, the faster we get this done, the better.”

”Wait a moment! I got a flashmail from Raine! There seems to be something wrong with out gate, and it brought someone else into the other field! I'm going back to the hideout with Raine to help fix it!” Sheena dashed to Nighthand, and handed him a bright blue orb, looking like it was made of glass.

”This is an item that will do what you came here to do! Just get it to the hub and it will do the rest! Not only will it destroy the hub too badly to be repair, but it'll download any flashmails already in the hub when you get it! It should get many, of course, as the mails wouldn't stay there for more than a second or so, but anything useful in them we might be able to find could help!”

Nighthand nodded his thanks and put the item away. That made it a lot easier, if they didn't have to figure out a way to destroy the hub themselves. By the time he turned back around, Sheena was gone.

”Well, looks like we're on our own. Let's do this thing... I assume we follow the path.” And once more, he set off along it.

It wasn't long before they encountered their first hint that there was something more in the field than birds and good feelings. They reached another small clearing and suddenly stones began to rain from the sky. Nighthand's sword was out and drawn before he even had located the enemy, but once he did it was plain this was a hacked field.

A half dozen monkey's sat in the branches of the trees around the clearing, seven of them to be exact. They hooted and hollered and threw stones they seemed to pull from nowhere. The stones themselves hurt, and Nighthand was dodging them while the rest entered the clearing.

”Looks like we have ourselves a fight!” he called to the group... Hopefully it wouldn't take long. This was the first good chance they'd had to hit the hackers where it could do the most damage.

OOC: Hello and welcome to the clearing of monkey target practice.

Forest Simians: Level 30, Seven of them.
HP 1400 ish, SP 400ish. Access to level 1 and level 2 wood kruz spells.
They're highly acrobatic and stay in the trees. The rocks are physical attacks. If they're knocked out of a tree, they do anything in their power to get away from people and get back in the trees. Also, they're team players. They'll gang up on someone to rescue one of their own, and they're gang up on people who kill one of their own. They're very angry monkeys.

Now, let's not make these split quests a bad idea, eh?

The wavemaster swung his head around, trying to absorb in the sight of the new field as quickly as possible. There didn’t appear to be any monsters within the immediate vicinity, so the group seemed safe for the moment. Green was everywhere, on the ground, above the forest’s floor, and even filled up a considerable portion of where the sky should be visible. In a way, his wardrobe would finally be useful for cover. A full length cloak that blended in with the environment wouldn’t make him any easier a target to hit. Swapping out his standard lightning rod for one of a more earthy shade, the mage was ready to go. After his last dealing in the pawn shop, he no longer possessed any armor to change into if the need arose.

As the group began the trek, Nighthand quickly took point, leading them along what appeared to be a fairly linear field. Within a short distance from their starting location, Nighthand shouted off a warning, vague about the specifics but clear in regards to the presence of a threat. Rushing out towards where the heavy blade was, Rayo only spotted the primitive foes placed before them. His view was lost within a span of two seconds as a big gray stone took up his entire field of vision as he found himself clubbed in the head. Stumbling back, the magician only kept himself upright by grabbing Ryok’s arm, using the swordsman as a stabilizer as he regained his balance. Locating the most probably suspect for the attack, the thunder mage ducked a rock coming from his left, now having found his target. A pair of the Forest Simians were near each other, but propped up in two different trees. Pointing his Gaia’s Staff directly beneath the duo, Rayo only regretted that Reinier wouldn’t be able to witness the display of his favorite element. The wizard pulled out his Almighty Wand from the bag slung over his shoulder, planting it in the ground in front of him and then ignoring it.

“GiGan Zot!”

Bursting forth from the ground came the series of towers, striking the trees, and in the case of one, splitting it apart right up the middle. Without the trees, the two monkeys dropped to the ground, getting knocked around a bit by the tail end of the spell, just enough to keep them off balance and take some damage. Before letting the first spell fully subside, the new weapon pointed up, foreshadowing the danger that being chained to the chaos.

“OrGan Don!”

Dropping from above the veil of branches and leaves, their cracking was the only warning before the rude rock chucking chimps found themselves being stoned, even by the element they shouldn’t like. Tossing the Gaia’s Staff into the ground like a javelin, the caster immediately pulled out the waiting Almighty Wand and leveled it at the two apes. One was reasonably stunned from the pair of spells thus far, but the other was already up and moving away. In an attempt to keep them both put, the weaker spell would become necessary.

“Gan Rom!”

The tornado of dust and granite swirled in the air, completely encompassing the slower monkey, but failed to do more than tear at the health of the other as it escaped the storm and darted back up a neighboring tree. Dropping the Almighty Wand, since it’s primary purpose was actually healing related, the mage picked back up his earth and spun it in a nice little circle above his head, finishing the twirl with it aimed straight at the end Simian that had rather failed at escaping the barrage.

“Yarthkins!”

With all of the earth spells, the wizard’s mind must have been thinking of one of the absent heavy blades, as the earth summon took the form of none other than a dragon, mirroring Reinier’s own familiar. Crashing down upon the monkey, the dragon savaging pulled it’s head off before disappearing, leaving one extremely brutally victimized monkey. In an act of kindness though, it was dead anyway so it’s not as if it’d have to deal with the pain. One down, quite a few more to go.

His satisfaction was removed as the wave master suffered a four way attack, three Juk Kruz spells and a rock to the head for good measure. Tipping other this time, Rayo raised the staff above his head for protection. Planning on moving and casting again once he wasn’t the only one making enemies.

-Ryok walked along the dirt path for what seemed like forever. If he was going to just fight and not worry about what exactly was going on he wanted to fight more often. His small stature shortened even more so as he dragged his shoulders on the ground, his head towards the ground. Eyes paying careful attention to each and every rock that he stepped on or over. Like a little child he sulked. He walked like this until he noticed one of the women that helped Nall turn from the front of the group and head back towards where they had come in. He hadn’t caught what she had said, because of his, well-rehearsed selective hearing. He looked back as the three golden rings carried her away. Standing up straight he listened into what Nighthand was saying.

-”Well, looks like we're on our own. Let's do this thing... I assume we follow the path.” A look of confusion coming across his face as they continued along. Once again their leader had no clue what they were doing. Ryok’s feelings of this had changed though. He thought back to when everything he had ever done was planned, and set before it even happened. Not knowing what he was doing was a little less then exciting, but it changed how he acted, somewhat. He placed his right hand on his Demonic Blades handle his other arm at his side. Swinging it back and fourth he strolled along the path watching the sky, and waiting for something interesting to happen. Wham. Ryok fell back on the ground everyone seeming not to notice kept walking. From the front of the group Nighthand shouted out to the rest of the group. ”Looks like we have ourselves a fight!” Ryok sighed turning on his side and rubbing his head with his free hand. A few words being muttered under his breath as he got to his feet.

-“Yeah, thanks for the warning.” Running to catch up to the group he stopped just behind the last member in the line. Ryok’s arm reached across his body as he readied for battle. It had already started. Rayo unleashed a fury of attacks upon the seemingly harmless monkeys. Spell after spell landed as his seemingly never-ending supply of Sp went into use. As he came to a stop it had seemed he had only killed one. Ryok awed at the awesome display of power as he realized the ‘harmless’ monkeys were beginning to launch a counter-attack on the lone opponent. Ryok knew that the mage was strong, but it wouldn’t be good if the only spell-caster in the group were to be put into a healing frenzy because of a simple mistake.

-The ryok started at the mage as the three glyphs overlapped each other under him, and the stone took flight. Ryok outstretched pushing the mage out of the way. The rock hit ryok in the side of his head as Rayo was pushed aside. As ryok fell just into range of the attacks the boulders appeared, and converged on to him. The three pairs of rocks crushed the tiny frame of his body consecutively. He fell to the ground his high hp bonus for being a heavy class helping as he fell flat on his face. He pushed his hands into the ground lifting his face out of the dirt. Coughing, little blood escaped his mouth the pain of broken ribs being numbed, and washing away as he gargled a health drink down. Coming to one knee he quickly rose, and looked up to see another rock midair aimed for his head.

-What the he…

-The rock ricocheting off of his forehead and back into some bushes out of the clearing. Ryok fell back once again. His right arm extended to catch his fall. Standing again he ducked and weaved in between the projectiles. He caught one. It had been sitting it the same spot pulling rocks from, no one really wants to know, and throwing them down at the party. That single monkey had been sitting in one spot all to long, and ryok knew that it wouldn’t notice the wind change. With ryok’s palm facing towards it he unleashed a subtle spell, when compared with Rayo’s spell fury, and hoped for the best. The glyph appeared under the unsuspecting creature, the fiery rock of doom following not to long after. The stone impaled the monkey’s head and took the branch it was sitting on clean off of its tree. As the monkey hit the ground it unleashed a crazed battle call and pulled multiple rocks from oblivion, hurling them towards ryok. He dodged, dove, ducked, and dodged the several rocks as the creature’s pals joined in on tormenting ryok.

-Grabbing into his pouch he pulled a speed charm from it, and stuck it to his chest. Ryok, raising his arms for protection, ran at the dazed monkey. He dropped his arms, his right hand on his blade’s sheath the other on its handle. The rocks were falling far behind him as he picked up speed. His legs pumped as he drew back to finish the monster. Running past it he pulled his blade from its sheath and slid it through his opponent. He straightened from his post slash stance and turned. The monkey was still on its feet. One of the first times ryok had ever seen an opponent survive a Karin attack, direct. Running back at the creature he deflected the few rocks it had left to defend itself with. A slash ran across it as he stopped in front of it. He pulled his sword back up in front of his face, deflecting yet another rock. Ryok dropped back, sliding his sword back into its sheath. He pulled forwards a sweeping Kannon attack. The monkey was no more. Ryok turned and faced up towards the treetops where the monkeys where. He put his hands up as a shower of rocks cascaded onto him.

-Ryok fell over several more rocks falling onto him; he rolled around on the ground to move from the following attacks. As the attacks subsided and only one was bothering ryok again, he managed to get to his feet. Another monkey in the exact same spot as the first on a re-grown branch stared intently down upon ryok. Another rock whizzed by his head as he ducked. His palm again faced towards the naive monkey. As the flame tornado whipped through the branches an idea came to ryok. The trees… They were flammable. As the storm started the monkey had anticipated the attack and moved allowing the single branch to become engulfed in flames. Ryok concentrated… He had never before tried to spread fire on to flammable substances. Ryok’s hands faced the flames, his thoughts concentrated on moving the flames. In a waving motion of his hands he pulled some of the embers off the burning branch and onto the tree, where the bark caught fairly easily. The bark quick turned a dark gray color as the flames burned the tree up and down. Ryok stealing away some of the flames to spread the actual fire. His hands moved in opposite directions away from the first burning tree. The fire caught the leaves and branches easily, quickly spreading the fire around. He knew he was creating a mess, but he wanted to help rid the group of the monkeys fast. Ryok stopped, his mind opening to happier thoughts. The flames engulfed another tree. He hoped not only to suffocate the group, but also to draw the monkeys out from the trees to make for better targets.

"Wake up you, I'm gonna need the speedy thing again!"

Gently removing her pet from a pocket, Hijinx poked it until it slowly burpled an acknowledgement. Quickly casting the Ap Do and wrapping himself around the fist fighter's neck, Urbosh went back to sleep as the fist fighter burst into the clearing. Holding out a fist with as much menace as she could generate and looking around for the threat, her fiery gaze eventually fell on her enemies. The stance and fire she had going in crumbled instantly, replaced by a different resolve: she was going to squeeze at least one of those monkeys, willing or not...

One in particular had caught her attention. Sitting on a branch not too far away, it noticed the gleam in her eyes and readied a stone while it screamed. A second quickly jumped down to the lower branch next to it and created a rock of it's own. With a grin, Hijinx took off at a run, becoming a giggling blur instantly. Confounded by the speed, both of the animals started scrambling up the tree as fast as they could, screeching and throwing rocks backwards as they went. Knowing she couldn't dodge all of the attacks, Hijinx snatched as many as she could out of the air to keep them from making any meaninful impact and started stufing them into pockets, waiting until they reached the top branches. Once the chimps stopped, her volley was launched, a massive scattering of stone that knocked both of the enemies off the limb and into the air where she could get them more easily. Jumping towards them at high velocity, the fist fighter let loose the words she had been waiting to say since she had aqquired her latest weapons.

"Yami Bearhug!"

The attack enveloped each monkey around the chest, squeezing their arms to their sides and pushing them together as she laughed, hopping down through layers of branches that had begun to catch fire with captives tightly held to her chest. Dropping into the open space next to Nighthand, she gave them another squeeze, making the hostile critters howl and gasp as the grip managed to tighten.

"They're so cute! Want one, nighthand?"

Before he could respond to her offer, Urbosh lashed out, stabbing into both monkeys at the same time with spikes that appeared to be part of his own body. With a frown, she watched both turn grey and dafe away as the pet's weapons retreated back into the blob. Yanking him off and holding him in front of her at eye level, she looked at him with annoyance, placing the free hand on her hip while she sighed.

The lush forest atmosphere did me good, as the warm air washed over me and gave me back a sense of life. The rejuvenating flow seemed to do me a world of good, as my headache finally disappeared and the scar within my mind became significantly less noticable. This place was certainly more hospitable than the last two fields I had visited, which really couldn't have done much for my mental state.

My serenity was shattered by Nighthand's voice. ”Looks like we have ourselves a fight!” I perked up, searching for the enemies he had seen, then nearly burst out laughing when I saw them. Monkeys? What kind of threat could they pose?

My question was answered quickly as a rock struck me between the eyes. The sharp, stinging pain caused a lightning-quick shift in my mindset as I went into combat mode. These monkeys weren't going to get any more free shots on me. However, they seemed to also have a strategy that kept me from striking them back. They stuck to the trees, keeping well out of reach of melee weapons. It looked like I would have to resort to my meagre assortment of spells to take them out. Rayo had already done so, blasting the primates with earth magic. However, the actions of another, specifically Ryok, were far more useful to me. He had set some of the trees ablaze, and the rapdicly spreading fire caused the monkeys to leap from tree to tree, and finally one of them fouled up. He fell to the ground, and before he could scramble back up a tree, I was upon him.

Only the speed granted me by my class allowed me to catch him, but once i did, I went berserk. A flurry of strikes meant to cut the beast to ribbons landed, but what happened next wasn't pretty. The first thing I noticed was that he pretty much managed to absorb my blows as if they were nothing. The second thing was somethign I didn't see, but rather felt. Rocks flew at me from all directions as the monkeys proved that they would defend their allies from harm. After the initial barrage, I backed off, but more stones continued to come from the trees, so many that it was all I could do to dodge most of them. I was struck several more times before they lost interest, and the monkey I had targeted had already made it back up the trees. Pests... I'll get them for that. However, I was going to have to rethink my approach.

Trying to remember my spell inventory, I thought of the Dek Ganz spell, one that had been granted to me only recently. I threw it out, knowing that weakening their earth element would help Rayo out... and I also noticed the leather coat in my equipment. I hadn't expected to use ti again so soon, but the situation called for earth spells, and it was all I had. Re-equipping it for a moment, I cast another spell. "Gan Zot!" I cried, targeting the same monkey that I had struck earlier. The force of the spell combined with his weakened elemental resistance staggered him, and though I couldn't deal a mortal blow, I knew that he was injured. Someone else would be able to finish him off easily enough.

For the moment, my part was done. It was time to look for more openings to take advantage of, and when they arose, act upon the opportunity. Opportunity was man's greatest ally in battle, and I wasn't about to try and force things. They'd all be destroyed in due time anyways.

All in good time.

The chaos level rose substantially as everyone joined in the attack. Ryok’s added flames were wearing down the monkeys, taking away many of the fortified defensive positions the apes preferred. That alone was keeping them off balance, giving the team an edge. Not to mention…Ryok was being a big help in general. The heavy blade pushed the caster out of the way of the second barrage, sparing his health any additional scars. Hoping to mitigate the damages to both himself and the swordsman, the wave master stabbed his staff in the ground, coinciding with his selected spell.

“La Repth!”

Dashing from where Ryok had pushed him, the mage made his way to a much safer location, back to back with Ryok once he finished setting the whole forest section around them on fire. If there was one on each side, deflecting rocks shouldn’t become an actual issue. His stick was raised, ready to be used defensively, the only physical purpose it really had.

Already, the attacks were becoming less fearsome. Besides his own kill, Ryok had cut another down, and Hijinx had taken out two more and there were just three chimps darting around full of numerous wounds. Taking advantage of Zhao’s combo against a flailing simian, Gaia’s Staff was directed towards the target. With both a natural and artificial weakness to the ground elemental style, that one would be easy to pick off. Going down his offensive spell list, something strange caught his eye, but was ignored in favor of not losing the moment.

“OrGan Don!”

Several boulders popped into the air above the monkey as it desperately tried to scale a tree that had yet to burn, crushing the monster before it could even register the attack. SP…a bit over 70. That was still enough for a continued barrage.

Trying to confirm what might have simply been a system error, Rayo pulled his menu back up, reading down the list for offensive spells. OrGan Don, GiGan Zot, Yarthkins, Rai Rom, Rai Kruz, Juk Kruz. The first three were on his current weapon, and the thunder incantations were from his armor, but nothing he had on possessed Juk Kruz or any wood spells at all. For that matter, nothing the wizard even owned or had ever owned possessed that spell…

The elementalist was shook out from his confusion by the deliverance of yet another pair of spells by the remaining Forest Simians. This time the lower leveled wood spell was accompanied by the upgraded version of the attack. Still having been looking through the list, his eyes acknowledged the addition to the list that came as the damage was registered. MeJuk Kruz rested one slot higher, being one of two wood spells he had access to. Obviously these spells were connected to the strikes by the Forest Simians…but how were they transferring their spells to him? An inherent bug in their programming? Were they so unstable that their data was being passed on? Only one way to know…

“Ryok! I know this isn’t the time, but is Juk Kruz showing up on your active spell list, even if it shouldn’t be?”

Swapping out wands, the present earth abilities all vanished, being replaced by what the Almighty Wand had working for it. Still, the wood spells remained. Backing off for the moment, his own lack of HP proved there were other matters to take care of. A measly La Repth was helpful for the group, but had a limited effect on his own health after being picked on and targeted so often by the hairy ape brigade. Quite thankful for his shopping trip, Rayo prepared for his own blessing.

“Ol Repth!”

With his health fully recovered, the tactician scanned the battlefield. Not everything was burning yet…only about fifty-five percent of the circle of trees were in such shape, with the area they had come from almost completely ruined. There was still an opening to continue on, but if the monkeys crossed over that way the ‘freedom fighters’ would end up setting it aflame as well. Swapping wands once more, the Expert Wand rested in his hands, ready to be used. Lining it up the burning trees between the two remaining monkeys on one side and the ‘safe’ trees, that entire region was being targeted for even more fiery devastation. Overlapping it slightly with the monkey closest the spot, the summoner fired off a round, draining off his remaining SP completely.

“Vulcan!”

The targeted area turned from burning trees into a full blown pyre, warding off even pyromaniacs from wishing to cross. The actual monster received only a slight burn before dashing off in the other direction, but the goal was accomplished. The monkeys were being herded to the left, into an area full of fire and away from their best path out the fire once they were done. Now all that was left was killing them and keeping the path open.

“We need to keep those few dry trees safe to pass by, any water spells should make do. Just don’t let us get surrounded by our own fire!”

Phoenix had wondered why Nighthand decided to send Team Rayo to the highest level field out of the three choices. He was not going to question him at this time as he equipped his Mining Gloves for the Gan Rom spell. Even though he did have Earth skills in some of his swords, he decided to have the spell to basically stun the enemy to setup for either Gan Crack or Gan Revolver along with being a ranged attack as well. The field itself was a jungle which the heat made Phoenix to put the hood up to shield him from the sun and heat. The field also brought images of the time when the group was chasing after Kurai which ended in failure.

Before the group move out from the maze, Sheena had to go back to the hideout to fix the gate so that no more people would tag along with us. She gave Nighthand an item that allows him to destroy the hub and download any flashmails before the hub crashes completely. Since the path was just limited to one way at the moment, Nighthand decided to move along before Tokki could arrive. It did not take long before the group encountered their first amount of resistance.

The resistance consisted of a group of seven monkeys who threw stones at the group. Phoenix drew out the Matoi sword and began blocking any stones with it while heading for cover. After Phoenix found some foliage to hide in, he watched the other members of the group dealing with the monkeys while trying to observe the monkeys’ movements. He never really understood why some people love monkeys so much. To him, they were a bunch of annoying things that touch the nastiest thing to him and throw it at people. Most people would just laugh at him since to them, throwing crap was funny along with the other disgusting things that monkeys did.

As the battle continued on, some of the trees were being burned in order to target the monkeys better. At this point, Phoenix was about to go into action when suddenly a memory stunned him. The memory was of him being data-drain by Kurai via the Treeweaver while being surrounded by fire which he set himself in order to protect the others from any other injury. Being data-drained was one of the most painful experiences that Phoenix went through and almost died because of the attack. The memory kept repeating itself in Phoenix’s mind and paralyzed him in a state of absolute fear. It’s rare for him to allow fear to stop him from doing any action like this. Not even the Elites made Phoenix to become scared like this. He just cannot understand his sudden fear now and cannot snap out of it.

Suzaku pick up on her master’s sudden state of fear and transformed into her bird mode. She bit on his left arm in order to break the panic state which he gave out a scream of pain. The bird let go of the arm a moment later to see if Phoenix had remove his state of fear from the system. Thanks Suzaku, I needed that. Now let’s kill us some monkeys. Shall we?

Suzaku gave a quick nod to Phoenix who managed to find a monkey jumping towards some of the trees that have not caught on fire yet. At that point, he managed to come up with a plan and waited for the monkey to land on a branch. Right at the moment that the monkey landed on a branch, the blademaster used his powers of gravity to increase the weight of the monkey. The branch that the monkey landed on collapsed and sent the monkey to the ground hard. Phoenix ordered Suzaku to surround the monkey with a ring of fire and burn the nearby trees so it could not escape so easily. He cast a Gan Rom attack on the monkey to stun the monkey before emerging from the foliage.

The monkey was suffering from a combined attack of fire, earth, and gravity as Phoenix charged at it. He jumped to avoid the ring of fire which was actually part of his Gan Crack attack motion. The blade of the Matoi became rock hard along with it being surrounded by a brown aura. The monkey tried to avoid the attack but it could not because of the fire and the immense weight of the gravity. The rocky blade went down through the monkey’s body which it was nearly critical health wise at this point. The master of gravity chopped off the monkey’s head to finish it off for good.

Before Phoenix had a chance to think, he was hit with a MeJuk Kruz attack from the remaining monkey. The attack caused him to have the replay of the memory of the Data Drain attack and once again caused him to be a state of fear. Suzaku saw Phoenix just standing there while the monkey was preparing for another MeJuk Kruz attack. She immediately spewed the monkey’s tree with fire which managed to cause the monkey to retreat back and gives her time to restore her master’s state of mind. The guardian bit Phoenix’s arm once again to cause him some pain but it was not enough this time around. Suzaku had to resort to some drastic measures and went up to the air. She flew down very fast and headbutted Phoenix’s stomach. The attack was enough to break Phoenix’s fear trance and reclaim his sanity. Kazuma-sama, I suggest that you should hide somewhere and let the others deal with the last monkey. There is no point for you to participate in this battle any further.

Phoenix agreed with his guardian and quickly switched back to his Fishing Gloves. He cast a Rue Kruz at the ring of fire and at some of the burning trees. Then he exited the ring of fire through the opening he created with the Rue Kruz icicles. The blademaster went back hiding into the foliage as he watched the others finishing off the last monkey. Phoenix wondered why he had these panic attacks now since fear has never stopped him like this before. He thinks that almost dying in a burning jungle made a deep impression of fear into his subconciousness. He hoped that once they get inside the dungeon or not burning anymore jungle, he would not have any more panic attacks.

Thinking can be scrambled

Post by Nighthand » Sun Jul 09, 2006 3:22 am

You know, you might be more effective if you stopped catching all those rocks with your head.

Yeah, I kinda got that. I might also be a bit more effective if you stopped distracting me.

The banter was par for the course, really. It made Nighthand feel much more at home in the combat. After all, what good was a fight if you couldn't trash-talk, even if it was just with a slightly altered version of yourself.

Taking quick stock of the situation, several things came to mind. First, they seemed to be standing in a burning forest. Second, there seemed to only be a pair of monkeys left. Third, the two remaining monkeys seemed to be distracted finally, in pummeling others with rocks and the occasional spell.

Pulling his new blade ready, he prepared his strike. The blade was easy to wield, for it held the same model as his Corona Blade... The difference being in level and element. The Smiling blade was perfect for this field; both earth and wood skills. Rather than it's surface blazing with a barely-contained heat, this blade simply felt solid, cool. Shaded, like the earth beneath a long-standing tree.

Shifting somewhat for speed over strength, the heavyblade rushed from his location on the edge of the clearing to one of the now-exposed remaining monkeys. The combination of recently-cast earth, fire, and water spells had driven it temporarily from it's leafy home. It shrieked out a warning, and the other monkey immediately unleashed a barrage of rocks, but it was no help. Nighthand's blade was already swung, the monkey already removed from this existence. The sole remaining simian, enraged, let off a juk kruz.

Nighthand was grinning as the spell struck him. It was powerful, for it's level, but not that great, barely taking his HP down. Pulling a Raining Rocks scroll from his cloak, he activated it. Not even doing anything special. After all, the monkey was already heavily wounded from the attacks of Rayo and the others. The spell quickly took effect, a large boulder landed on the ape from high in the sky.

Shrugging, Nighthand spoke up.

”Well... Since we seem to have lit the field on fire, it's probably best that we get moving. The dungeon should be near by... Let's go.” He headed off down the trail, escaping the smoke and the burning brush without too much effort. Thankfully it hadn't spread too far, yet. He soon drew to a halt, however, as they encountered the first puzzle of the field. At least, so it seemed.

For they had entered another clearing. Though this time, it was a little less than a clearing and a bit more like a widening of the path. The path that, a few yards ahead, split into six. Each was flanked by a pair of trees, and each tree had foliage of a different color. It seemed the typical line of elements... From left to right. Bright red, then Yellow, then a bright green. Following was a green dark enough to look blue, with small blue flowers scattered around it's branches. To it's side was a tree with leaves of a red so deep as to be black, and then a sun-darkened brown. Each pair of trees has a rope strung between them, each hanging a sign.

Between the Red Trees
A Heady She Wilt Tolls

Between the Yellow Trees
A Depth Tights Whish Lint

Between the Green Trees
De Serpentine Toils

Between the Blue Trees
A Clad Senses Eve Now

Between the Black Trees
Ensnared Drinks Venge

Between the Brown Trees
Sad Germs Prose

In front of them all, equidistant from each path, was a lone sign.

Your senses are muddled, your knowledge is low
You only desire to know where to go.
Your trail is broken, your guidance misled
A single false move here could leave you all dead.
So choose your path wisely and walk to it's end
And hope that a foe won't be made of a friend.

That was all.

Nighthand stared at each sign, hoping to find sense in their gibberish, but couldn't. So, he shrugged, and took a seat on the ground. They were far enough away that the fire wouldn't bother them for a little while, at least... so they had a little time to think.

Ooc: Yay for puzzles. Just converse, attempt solutions if you like, try and figure out what the signs really say if you want... All up to you. You've got what you need to solve it. ^_^ And for the record, taking a false path will be allowed. It might not be easy, and it might not get you to your destination, but it'll be allowed.

Following the death of the remaining monkeys, the lightning mage charged through the clearest path, only stopping once there was a new development. Mainly, more choices. More than just a simple fork in the road, there lay six paths, but were they equally valid?

A similar occasion came to mind, shortly before Rayo had journeyed on his own. Gingitsune had led the team through a dark forest, and there had been seven choices on where to proceed. Yet no different than the last time, there was a primary sign and individual notes for each separate road the party could travel. On that adventure, the group had followed the path labeled as ‘death’ and seemed to find reasonable success. After all, no one had died. That path had been the sixth out of the seven choices, something to note in case this was a connected incident. The situation was practically the same as the last time in so many ways…

Still, the most important thing to start off handling would be analysis of the situation before dealing with the information provided. While it could all be false and designed for the purpose of their own destruction, the hackers could have just as likely decided to offer clues to the correct route. Besides, the correct path was probably one of the most dangerous. In the event that the team encountered the hub, it would most likely be guarded by some sort of powerful defense or incredible monster. Assuming the hackers didn’t fortify every single possibility, at the very least the main road would be guarded. By that method, choosing the ‘right’ path helped to ensure death, and avoided letting them get away with a lucky win.

Assuming the information could be trusted, each of the six paths had their own unique message. Perspective number one, the number six. Currently, there were that many players in the group. Nighthand, Rayo, Ryok, Zhao, Phoenix, and Hijinx. Tokki should be along shortly…but that was not yet the situation. If there were seven of them, there might be seven paths. In that theory, the number of paths was supposed to be equal to the number of players accessing this section of the forest. Splitting up further was out of the question, and besides…that wasn’t the reason.

There were two other relations to the designated number. First off, there were half a dozen elements. Thunder, Darkness, Earth, Wood, Fire, and Water. By that same token, there were six remaining Elites and each had a specialty. It was possible that each designed a single path, or had some sort of connection, such as being at the end of each. However, there wasn’t any reason to have that many Elites. Besides, Phoenix had offered up the elemental preferences for the Elites remaining. Ice which equated to water, wood, thunder, fire, darkness, and light. If each sign wasn’t already leaning towards a specific type of magic, then it would be possible. The closest comparison for light would be thunder, which was already taken by Rugudorull, leaving Royce none to claim her own. With the lack of earth between the remaining Elites, it didn’t seem likely.

Based off the color comparisons on the set of six signs, the order from left to right seemed to be Fire, Thunder, Wood, Water, Darkness, and Earth. While it was entirely possible it was suggesting the element to use there…that was too far a stretch to bother considering in depth. Furthermore, the second line probably provided a clue into the specifics down that road besides an elemental pick. Fire seemed to indicate just a difficult path, which was fine. However, given what Ryok and himself had been doing…that might be a region more likely to maintain their forest fire. By that train of thought, water was a good bet. However, water seemed more likely to cover the senses, or if read differently, would indicate an end to the journey. That could specify either a deathtrap or the proper answer.

Moving on, thunder seemed unfavorable. Despite whatever personal preference a thunder mage might maintain, yellow provided far too much danger. The comparative writing could place whatever was there as something that would stick to them, much like lint. Being yellow…quicksand was quite possible. While climbing trees could provide a way out, even the terrain might sink under such pressure. Phoenix could probably help them walk over it with the power of gravity, but how well could that be maintained in the heat of battle, most likely against beasts native the sands they might encounter? Any attempts at flight would be hindered by the trees overhead…making the entire predicament tricky. Darkness…it related far too closely to the last field. There had been food and drinks served there after going through dark woods filled with spiders…none of that seemed fun last time. However, at the end of it had been a weapon of light…and this was Pulsating Light Trap Core. The whole idea of being ensnared would be bad…and suggested it was simply a trap. The name of the field implied traps, and instead of being the right route, it could simply be a play on words specifically meant to trap those searching for connections through the experiences of the past. Which, rather likely, were monitored by the very hackers they needed to outwit now.

That left wood and earth. Earth was left out of the Elite elemental choices, which could imply a safe path because of the lack of their presence, or a more dangerous one…forgotten and abandoned like the former wielder. Besides, ‘sad germs prose’…something about that just screamed emo poetry. Knowing how depressed the group could realistically be with their imprisonment, forces within the field meant to sadden them further could deteriorate any sense of unity within the group. Losing focus would be delaying, so earth was another less than perfect option. Wood…the very type of field they were in. So obvious…once wood was chosen, wood should be repeatingly chosen. Dangerous logic…but was it right? The second line suggested the presence of a snake, which in and of itself offered two meanings. Either there would be a Judas, a natural betrayal, or there was an oversized snake monster that acted as the boss for this field. If it was the protector of the hub, that would be the right path.

Next, consider the main sign. There were six lines to it, perhaps bridging a connection with the other signs, one for each. If taken in that sense where that sign was disconnected from itself, there were six meanings. Trouble, knowledge, false, death, correct, and betrayal. The only two that would gaining points for being correct paths from that piece of information would be both thunder and darkness. If thunder provided knowledge and darkness provided the path…the line intended for lightning might actually mean to still take the darkness trail, but simply light it up to achieve the needed objective. Therefore, one point for the darkness path.

As a whole…it could simply offer a word of warning. The senses would be confused. Senses…see, hear, smell, touch, feel. The group did wish to know the right way and illusions confusing any of those, or the loss of any of them, could hinder that. The third line outlined the current trouble with choosing, while the fourth simply warned, ‘choose the right path and don’t be stupid or you’ll be hurt’. Then, pick a path and if you’re right you won’t be confused in a way where you’ll need to fight an ally. While the field’s clues probably hinted at infighting between the present group, there could be a trap to force them into a battle with the missing Tokki. As a whole, it didn’t offer a suggestion any which way, but more just what must be done.

By separate signs, wood held the best advantage, followed by darkness. If the dot connecting by piecemeal was correct, then it was darkness, followed by thunder. If they were equally valid, darkness the right way to go. Still, which clues were more important? Wood did suggest a snake and avoiding betrayal was high on the list of things not to do according to the guidelines sign…darkness it was. There was still a very good chance that the wizard was wrong, but that was the best trail to take according to his logic.

Finally…should they leave a sign for the missing long arm? A dropped item or forged sign might help, but only if they were right. If anyone else saw it, their location could be given away. Even a flash mail could be dangerous…who knew if Tokki would be the only one seeing it here? No…she could track the destruction they’d cause. That was hint enough.

-“La Repth” The wavemaster called out as the blue aura of the healing spell surrounded ryok and himself. He had drunk a health drink to heal what it was worth, but the spell helped to heal him completely. He stretched his abdomen flexible again, the rest of the pains from the attack disappearing with the aura. Ryok scanned the area. It still wasn’t enough. Many of the monkeys still resided in the trees; ryok knew he could scare them from their perches.

-His hands aimed at two random flames and pulled them off the tree. Gathering strength as he picked up more from the random spots of it. Funnels of flame encircled the trees, ryok’s hands spinning and forcing the flames. He kept the flames in check not allowing them to reach the ground, or to spread anywhere but where the monkeys were located. Any crisp branch about to hit the ground being lifted before it was allowed to do so. He concentrated not only on controlling them but also on what was still attacking them. He ducked, rocks flying over-head, a funnel spiraling out of control. It hit the ground the heavy blade cringing at his inexperience dealing with his element. The leaves started burning, the flames running across the ground along dry foliage before ryok realized it and lifted it off the ground. He spun his hand the flames from the ground spinning downward and wrapping around a tree. Closing his hand into a fist the flames closed in around the tree, igniting it. He recoiled looking at what he had done. It seemed to be more than helpful, and with the wind at their backs the smoke was flowing away from them. The flames spread, catching branches of trees that were on either side of them.

-He stopped backing as the others took on the rest of the monkeys. Rayo at his back he realized what the mage he proposed. Ryok drew his sword and knocked the flying rocks away like baseballs. Some deflected off his blade when he wasn’t recoiled to swing. Ryok kept the mage’s defense as he worked his spells. After a few spells being launched he asked ryok a question without turning to him.

-“Ryok! I know this isn’t the time, but is Juk Kruz showing up on your active spell list, even if it shouldn’t be?” He asked. Ryok shook his head wondering at what the mage was getting at.

-Where would I get Juk Kruz from?

-“No, I don’t” He said recoiling for another rock. It disappeared into the woods as Nighthand dispatched the last of the simians. Nighthand lead the pack into the woods after saying a few words. Ryok stood back trying to disperse the flames. He couldn’t though. He was still in the dark when in question of his power, but he knew the basics now. He turned from the raging fire not knowing what to do with it, but knowing that if the rest of the ground wasn’t worried he shouldn’t be either. Following the shadows of the rest of the group he arrived just after everyone else. A puzzle of sorts lay ahead. Ryok sighed a deep, heavy sigh. He normally didn’t like to think when he played games, but this could mean life or death. Six pairs of different colored trees lay before them. Strung between each a sign that served as a clue to taking the right path. Out in front of them all stood an individual sign, a main sign. Looking around at all the signs he read them in his head.

-Red reads… A Heady She Wilt Tolls. Yellow, A Depth Tights Whish Lint. De Serpentine Toils, Green. Blue says… Uhh… A Clad Senses Eve Now. Black, Ensnared Drinks Venge, and Brown Sad Germs Prose. So, lets see. I don’t understand most of this. The only one that I’d say I wouldn’t want to go down is the green one. The sign clearly states there’s a snake down there. Hmm, that’s all I can really pick out.

-“Into the darkness, between the black trees is where this mage wishes to go.” Ryok’s eyes opened his head tingling. He sighed again, not really understanding what lay before them. He didn’t want to take the time to dismember the riddle limb from limb. Moving to the front of the group he sat down on the ground, and waited for someone to deduce something before him. All he knew was that he didn’t want to go down the green path. So he spoke his mind, and let everyone know the obvious.

-“I don’t think it’d be wise to go down the green path.” His eyes looked back and forth across the trees. “That’s just my opinion though.” He stopped waiting for something to happen. His head getting light as the lack of oxygen to the brain started getting to him. He inhaled deeply and waited again for another person in the group to speak. His head spun with thoughts as he went over the main board.

-Your senses are muddled, your knowledge is low. You only desire to know where to go. Your trail is broken, your guidance misled. A single false move here could leave you all dead. So choose your path wisely and walk to it's end. And hope that a foe won't be made of a friend.

-It has six sentences, like the six of the doorways. Hmm, each sentence says something in a buffed way. If I take each sentence for what it’s worth, and assign them to a door then. The fifth sentence is the path that I should so choose. Which lands the black trees and the yellow trees if done both ways. Hmm… Ensnared Drinks Venge. Avenge what though? The yellow tree though it’s subtle, and I don’t see anything wrong with the lint from some tights. My votes on taking yellow.

-Ryok stood walking towards the yellow trees. He turned and faced the group.

-“This is where I stand.”

Phoenix was glad that they were away from the burning forest fire for now but he preferred to complete the mission and get out of this forest. He never had a panic attack like that before while being a Freedom Fighter or just a normal player until now. This was a concern for him but time would not allow him to ponder about as they were confronted by a puzzle. Phoenix saw six pathways that had colored trees surrounding each of them. There was also a sign hanging between the pathways along with one main sign that had equal distance from each path.

The blademaster walked to each path and read each of the signs before reading the main sign. He notices that Ryok has chosen to take the Yellow path while Rayo chose to take the Black path but did not really explain for their reasons for it. He remembers the last time where the party had a choice in paths which actually happened during the Kurai mission. This place is too similar to Kurai's dungeon. This is getting weird. It could be some odd coincidence but nothing is truly a coincidence. Anyway, back to the puzzle at hand.

Phoenix tried to come up with a reasonable conclusion to the puzzle but could not understand some of the words at hand since it was Old English. Even though he spoke English pretty well, reading it and understanding older variations of it was a problem for him. At this point, Suzaku began to talk to him. I think I can help you with some of the words. I can understand many languages. So let's crack this puzzle, Kazuma-sama.

Phoenix and Suzaku confer with each other for a few minutes before they came up with a reasonable answer. At this point, Phoenix spoke to the entire group and explains his deduction to them before telling them his choice.

"Ok guys, I'm going to explain the reason why I'm choosing the way that I did compared to Rayo and Ryok who did not explain at all and just chose whatever. I'm sure that you guys have your reasons for it but a little explaining to us would help. Anyway on to the explaination."

Phoenix took a small pause before he started to explain his reasoning to them, "Alright, so you have the first path which says, A Heady She Wilts Tolls. If we examined this message, it has some different meanings which all involve the word heady. In one sense, it could mean that the woman is losing her rashness but it could also mean that she's losing her good judgement. Also, it could mean that she is sounding the demise of her judgement or rashness. Then you have the next sign which is, A Depth Tights Whish Lint. This sign was hard to figure out but I think it means that it involves moving clothes with sound. The next sign says, De Serpentine Toils. Even though the obvious meaning of this sign is that there's a snake that proceeds with difficulty but it could have another meaning. It could mean to proceed with difficulty along with being tempting."

Phoenix took a breath before going on with the final three signs, "The next sign is A Clad Senses Eve Now. This sign means that something was covered up now can sense an approaching danger. The fifth sign was Ensnared Drinks Venge which means someone thrists for vengeance. Then finally you have Sad Germs Prose which means that a sad child is developing some qualities. Now let's examine the main sign."

Phoenix took another pause before continuing with his explaination. "The main sign could be telling us which sign to take by following their meanings. The first line seems to take out blue and brown. The second line doesn't really eliminate a choice while the third one takes out green and red. The fourth and fifth line is the same as the second line while the last line takes out black. So by this logic, the yellow path should be the correct path which is the one that Ryok has chosen. So do you guys agreed with me or disagree? I don't mind being wrong if someone has a better explaination out there."

Phoenix waited by the path with the yellow foliage with Ryok and took a seat as they waited for Ice Mistress along with coming up with a consensus about what path they would take. He was not going to force his choice upon the others like he did in Kurai's dungeon as it dragged everyone by force into a room with many imps. He just remembered that Kurai's dungeon was the first time that Suzaku was with him on a mission. It was weird to him that memories of Kurai keep coming up to him but none of his real world memories of himself refused to be remembered. Phoenix knew that there will be a time to think about his current memory problem but right now, he had a mission to take out the Elite hub with everything that they had.

Yellow path: wrong.

Post by Nighthand » Sat Jul 15, 2006 10:28 pm

Rayo votes for the black trees, Phoenix and Ryok vote for the yellow. Nighthand himself didn't care much one way or the other; this sort of puzzle had never been his strong point. He was there to kill things, not to think.

”Yellow trees it is, then.” Nighthand said, hefting his blade on his shoulder. Rayo might be irritated that they ignored his logic, but... well, he wasn't the leader of the group, after all. He might have the best tactical mind out of any of them, but that didn't mean he'd always be right. Of course, it didn't mean that the majority had any better idea what they were doing, but at least this way, the minimum of people would be disappointed or irritated with it.

Nighthand walked up to the yellow pathway. His sword swung, and the rope blocking their pathway was severed. That should be all the sign Tokki would need, should she follow. Without another word, the heavyblade continued down the pathway. After all, they could always come back, right?

After a few hundred yards, it readily became apparent that no, they couldn't come back. Glances behind him showed the pathway just... disappearing. Where there used to be a clearly defined trail, there now seemed to be an equal wall of jungle. It promised to make you instantly lost should you stray from the trail. They were along this path for it's duration, however long that would be.

After what seemed like hours, and endless amount of time trekking through jungle, the weather unchanging and the sun hanging still in the sky, they came across an end to the pathway. A small clearing with no exit and, as soon as they were all in, no entrance either. There was just one thing unique about the clearing, and that was a structure. Stones stacked in a ring, rising to a waist-level height. A well.

As Nighthand approached, he was startled to hear sounds coming from the well. Moving closer, he peeked inside.

A long cylinder of stone bricks descended underground, a row of iron rungs following it. A ladder. Listening, the heavyblade could make out the sounds now. A voice.

”Help me... I'm lost, please, someone help me... Can anyone hear me? Is there anyone at all? Can anyone up there help me? I'm afraid I can't find my way home...” The voice continued, saying the same thing in different ways. It was female-sounding, and young, like a child.

Glancing around, Nighthand didn't really give it a second thought. It was obviously they way they would have to go, regardless of whether or not they had someone to rescue in the bottom. The hackers... Why do this? Give you a one-way road and think it's not enough? Think there's some other reason necessary to get them to travel it?

With a shrug, Nighthand swung himself over the edge and climbed down the ladder.

After a while, in darkness, his feet touched ground. It took a moment for his eyes to adjust to the darkness, but when they did, he noticed a slight bit of illumination coming from behind him. The cylinder of the well was broken, a doorway there for them, opening onto a cavern. The walls of which he couldn't see. The source of the light was evident now, a small figure in the distance. Obviously the source of the voice. She perked up immediately on hearing the group touching down, and rose to meet them.

Literally, rose. As she grew closer it was evident that she wasn't human; at least, not now. Humanoid, she only stood a foot tall... had she been standing. Instead, her pale blue wings allowed her to float as they quivered, no doubt aided by magic. She was the storybook picture of a fairy. Her body was pale-skinned and dressed in a blue dress, matching the shade of her wings. Her entire body emitted a soft glow, enough for the rest of them to see by, if only for a few yards around.

”Thank you, thank you, thank you! Dear spirits, I though I'd be trapped here forever! Though, I fear I may have drawn you into the same mistake...” Tears began to fill her large, bright yellow eyes. ”The ladder's gone for you now, just like the rest of this forest has been.”

Nighthand turned, and saw what she said was true. He turned back. ”Do you know of another way out of here?

”If I did, I wouldn't be here, now would I? But... I know it's more than just an empty room. There's a tunnel, but I can't get through. It's guarded.”

”Show us? I think we can help you.”

She nodded, smiled, and flew off. A few seconds later, she returned, a sheepish grin on her face.

”Sorry... I forgot not everyone glows. I'll go slower this time.”

True to her word, she moved slower on down the cavern, so the group was easily able to keep up. Soon the cavern's walls came into view, narrowing in to a still-dark area. A slight breeze came and went, hinting at a draft coming from the other end.

A few more steps closer and it became evident that they were not alone, however. A set of shapes rose from the darkness, eyes glowing red as they opened. Creatures that looked, in the light, like crystalline gargoyles had them surrounded.

”Looks like we're in for a little fight.” Nighthand said to himself. Why did they always just walk into these things?

--------------------------ooc:

Crystal Gargoyles: x12
Magic doesn't harm them, physical does. Sorry Rayo.
They're not very strong, but they're moderately fast.
They have physical attacks (claws like blades) and if magic is cast at them, it's reflected on it's caster, powered up one level.

Note: The fairy will avoid strikes, cast repth occasionally, and mostly just try to stay out of the way without putting us all in complete darkness.

Questions, ask me, and IM me if you wanted conversation with her. Yay battle!

After speaking up, the lightning mage simply had waited by the path he had suggested. Within a short time, both Ryok and Phoenix made their own votes, both siding with the yellow path and since no one else expressed an opinion…that was where they were soon headed. Still, what Phoenix had said had bothered him a bit. There were good reasons not to always voice the reasons aloud. Once an idea was suggested, then it could readily be stuck in one’s mind. Even if the individual had been able to think up a better interpretation out of the original riddle, they may not be able to think of it in a different way after being suggested one take on it. In the end though, it wouldn’t make a difference. The group was headed in one direction, no longer wasting time and weren’t splitting up into unseemly groups.

Glancing around as they traveled down the path, it was as if the party wasn’t moving out in the open, but through a series of pathways. The path behind them was vanishing, not unlike each door being closed. Still, there was no reason to try heading back until the current route was fully examined. This was where the party had chosen, and the biggest waste would not be confirming it one way or the other.

Checking his list of spells once more, with plenty of time having passed since the engagement, it remained the same. No matter how many times his equipment was changed, or even removed completely, the two spells of wood remained. Would a glitch from the simians really last this long after their death? Not to mention Ryok…the heavy blade expressed clearly that the same was not going on for him. Perhaps the spells really were stuck there for good…or at least their names. It was fully possible that the spells would indeed not activate…but a different fact made him wonder further. Even with the Almighty Wand and Thunder Torque removed, the white magic also remained, both La Repth and Ol Repth. That made four separate spells attached to his character and not any particular piece of equipment…a situation unheard of to him.

Testing the theory, as they walked on, the mage raised one arm and whispered Ol Repth. As would occur normally…the blue light that accompanied the magic appeared, and the number ‘400’ flashed above his character display. Despite the presence of the Great Elite, the spell had been fully accessible. Further experimentation would need to be done of course, but for now it seemed that the additional abilities were functional.

At the same time…there was a connection between them. Juk Kruz and MeJuk Kruz had shown themselves after the monkeys had used them on the wizard. After healing himself, the caster also had more control and use over the pair of healing spells. In every instance, the spell became…yes, attached really did seem like the best word, immediately after being used on the character known as Rayo.

After continuing to walk a while longer, the group halted in front of another clearing. From past experience, they seemed to be the areas that provided the meat to this field, each with a different roadblock planted there by the hackers. Monsters first, then forks in the road, and finally…a well?

A voice from a young girl echoed below, but most likely it was a trap. It was a classic, lure the ‘good guys’ to a trap, assuming they’d try to rescue the maiden. The sorcerer shook his head, disappointed in himself for a moment. All of that ‘Freedom Fighter’ talk must have been contagious. There were no ‘good guys’ or ‘bad guys’, simply sides with different objectives, some better than others. Unless they were given a good enough reason, whoever was down there would not be helped. Still, the path ended there, why not go down and continue onwards. Though, that was a joking thought, the biggest reason was that Nighthand was already descending the ladder.

Following soon after, the spell caster followed the group leader, stopping once a speck of light appeared. Was it an item, or a hole in whatever wall this potential labyrinth might have? Once it came closer and began to speak, it was obvious that this was neither of those things, simply the body behind the voice. It was a fairy…and soon was requesting aid from them all. If this was the form of a guide the hackers would provide…he’d simply need to keep eyes open in case the tiny person tried anything. Without her light, they might be hard pressed to make any steady progress. Thunder and fire spells could provide some light, but mere flashes wouldn’t be the best for a full dungeon trek.

Reaching some marked off point, the dimensions of their immediate vicinity became more clear, as did the blood colored eyes of their latest enemies. Gargoyles this time…wonderful. One, two, three…twelve in all? Surrounded even, just as in the case with the mammals before. Whoever designed this place certainly wanted to employ as many ambushes as possible to take down any intruders.

Not wishing to waste more time, the Great Elite’s tip tapped the ground, setting off a spell towards the beasts. Aiming at the crystal monster almost directly in the front, it would be the first to fall.

“GiRai Rom!”

The thunder spell itself didn’t seem shorter, but the light from it seemed weaker, almost bottled up and sealed. The room wished to be dark, and it was only willing to accommodate so much for some uninvited guests. The Gargoyle moved through the storm naturally, complete without the hindrance the spell should have provided? Did it even take any damage from that? Given no time to consider it, a mirror image of the tornado opened up around him…no. It wasn’t the same, the spell was even brighter and more brutal than his own.

Bending at his knees against his own will, the wave master pulled open his menu again, testing his theory and confirming the identity of the attack. There it was…MeRai Rom was also on the list. His readings from the Thunder Magic book pointed that out as the level three version for the thunder rom style. What came back at him was of the same type of spell but simply stronger…would all of his magic be useless against them? Possibly…though both healing and support magic would likely not be affected. Handling his pain first, Ol Repth flashed again, closing the opened cuts and removing the numb feeling in his hand.

Using his own magic against him…not acceptable. A summon might not be able to blocked…but if it was…the force of such an attack would be unbearable, especially if upgraded to the third level of summons. If not though…

The mage dropped his Thunder Magic and Great Elite for a moment, keeping them as reserve thunder boosts if need be. The Expert Wand was his current choice…the weakest magical offense his equipment could provide. If this was reflected…at least it would be weaker by comparison. This magic at his disposal…it wasn’t natural. If that was the case, then it might not follow the same rules as his GiRai Rom.

“MeRai Rom!”

The thunder spell sparkled, lightning dancing around the gargoyle, but despite looking like a fancy light show, the electricity proved no more useful than it’s brethren. If anything, it’s fate was worse, with two of the beasts being within the blast radius, and both prepared to send the spell right back.

Letting go of his currently equipped staff, both thunder items were reequipped, both providing a solid defense that would be needed. Gulping down a Sports Drink in one hand to further boost his defense, a Ol Repth was let loose halfway between the pair of raging storms, a PhaRai Rom each. The wavemaster sank to the ground, nearly dead from the combination attack. His SP was suffering, 130 gone already, but it was nothing compared to his HP. Stamina wise, a level two spell would be enough to knock him over…maybe even a lucky level one. Offensively, there was only one thing left to try.

Rayo needed to know…was the riddle right? The message by the yellow trees suggested the well they had entered, the lone sign was also quite right about the darkness. The fairy was likely the friend in question, but the line dared something else…testing the limits of trust.

His ally…his oldest ally inside the game that still stood by him, was none other than what appeared like a mindless beast. Lanceor…it wasn’t like a grunty of any of the animals some of this group had tagging along. No different from a standard spell, that was the programmed idea. When the wizard had been more bonded to his element though, Lanceor demanded a far different feeling from the rest of the electric styles. Those provided the feeling that finesse and tactics were required, while the summon had been power, willing to charge through anything to accomplish one’s goals. If thinking failed, Lanceor took over. Even without that connection, the feeling was not forgotten. His element hadn’t been working, this glitch wasn’t either. Sitting back and healing wasn’t his style, not by a long shot. Thrusting the Great Elite in the air before slamming it down into the ground, Rayo beckoned forth the greatest magic he could muster, a summon feeding off of the energy from the stat boosting expendable.

“Lanceor Ch!”

Harmlessly, the wolf dove at the target, failing to achieve any success with sinking fangs. The sole Crystal Gargoyle struck maliciously narrows it’s eyes, and within a moment a being with powers not unlike a titan appeared, the famed Lanceor Rf. Acting with such swiftness, any dexterity the lightning mage might have possessed proved negligible, as the boy was nothing more than a ghost long before the statue’s sword finished a swing.

Nighthand designated the path they would take. The yellow pathway, the one ryok had stood by, was picked to take because of the majority rule. With the discolored rope that hung the sign of the yellow trees cut Nighthand started down the path. Everyone followed. Ryok had stopped just before entering and looked back on the path from which they had come. The longarm known as Tokki still nowhere in sight. Turning back towards the followed path he started in a light jog. They were still in sight, but he didn’t want to be the one who strayed from the pack. The sweat overcame him in a few short seconds under the heat of the sun. His red kimono not helping any as it served to soak up the sweat.

Just behind him the path was fading out of existence. So, even if it was in fact the wrong path they had so choose they weren’t going back to where they had started. Coming to a stop just behind the person furthest in the back ryok sighed. He didn’t even bother trying to look over at what they were all staring at. He couldn’t see over them no matter what happened. Turning from the group he walked back towards where they had come. The path from which they had come was now completely grown in. Almost as if it was never there, turning from the edges of the clearing he looked back on the group. They were gone. Running to the edge of the well he looked down into it. Darkness was only to be seen, but he could make out the voice of Nighthand talking to a young woman. Ryok raised an eyebrow as he pulled himself up on to the edge of the well. Stepping forward, he disappeared down into the darkness.

-He landed quietly in a kneeled down position with one hand on the dirt floor. The well was dry. Turning out of the stone container of the well he could just see a faint light in the distance. The room the group was in was large enough to mask light within its great darkness. Ryok thought quickly and got to his feet so as not to let them get out of sight. He followed them until they had stopped. In the darkness he waited until he could see Rayo’s luminous attacks of lightning. Rushing towards the newly created action he looked around, all that was visible of the creatures being their glowing red eyes. Ryok smirked. He had never really had the chance to fight monsters in the dark until now.

-Switching out his Demonic Blade for the Light Giver he stood in a defensive position looking around at all the eyes. His blade rose as he picked out the sound of a galloping creature coming towards him. Another one of Rayo’s attacks going off as ryok pinpointed the creatures place. Turning to his right the creature jumped towards him. Ryok pulled his sword back above his head and let the blade down as the creature came into striking range. It’s claws extended in a weak attempt to attack him, ryok’s blade lit the area in a ten-foot radius. The blade struck the creatures head the sound of the impact echoing throughout the room.

-“Rai Smash” Dust rose up from the ground as the monster slid back into the darkness. Ryok’s tentative eyes watching for its eyes to light back up through the darkness. For a quick second he had thought he saw them, or maybe it was just his imagination? Ryok hit the ground his head smacking the compacted, cement like, dirt floor. Blinking a few times his eyes lost focus, the warm sensation of blood over coming him as he turned to face up. The creature’s deep unblinking red eyes stared down at him. Lifting a paw it let it down into his face not so very softly. The side of ryok’s face hit the dirt floor again and again as the creature leaned to bite his neck. Blindly feeling around for his blade led him to its handle quickly. As the creature went in for the kill ryok lodged his feet under it and pushed up and away from him. Pushing into the ground he rose to one knee. The monster recovered and without giving it a second thought pounced again. Ryok had already readied for another attack by pulling his blade up. Pointed toward the creature he held it under his left forearm. He thrust it forwards with a smile of victory across his face.

-“Rai Drive” Using the creature’s momentum, and throwing himself forward, he thrust the blade into the crystal of the gargoyle’s body. Falling on to his face he smiled his job done, or so he had thought. The fairy that he had yet to meet cast repth on his torn body, the blue aura falling around him as most of the wounds about his face faded from reality. Turning back towards where the previous lighting attacks had come from he noticed the faint blue glow of a ghost. Ryok lifted an eyebrow as his imagination took hold. Who could’ve died against these things, despite his close call?

-Getting to his feet he walked towards the lone person who seemed to be upset. Ryok’s eyes got big as he realized whom it was. The great lightning mage Rayo had fallen, but what ryok didn’t know was that it was the mages own doing that lead him to death. Tearing through his pouch he searched for an item he used very little. Not so often that when he got it from his pouch he just stared at it wondering at how to use it. Looking up from it he glanced at the Rayo who seemed to be having trouble with his manners, because he was pointing at ryok, or so it had seemed. Ryok looked back down at his item as an object toppled him over. Loosing grip of it as he fell he threw it up over Rayo’s head, thereby reviving the deceased character. He was on his back in the dark, the creature’s two paws above him. His hands gripped the slippery surface of the monster’s skin around its forelegs keeping the blades it had for claws away from him. The sheer weight of a solid crystal creature began to bear down on him. Rolling he managed to topple the monster off of him and on to the dirt floor. Getting to his feet unusually quickly he recoiled and thrust his blade down into the dirt unleashing another wave of light into the noisy dark room.

-“Rai Drive” The blade hit the creature’s body, vibrations shooting up the blade as it passed through the dense material. Recoiling he readied a final blow, but as the blade dislodged from the gargoyles side it regained its size and tackled ryok. One of it’s claws clashed against the width of ryok’s blade, the other sinking into his stomach. Ryok pulled his blade up to free it from the weight of the monster but as he did the claws of the other paw sank deeper. The monsters grip on ryok grew as it sunk deeper and deeper into him. Un-equipping the Light Giver a fiery mass appearing in his left hand as ryok took it up with both hands and drew it back it’s point on the monster’s forehead.

-Ryok sat up thrusting the blade into the monster’s thick skull, and down into it’s body. It slumped over leaving ryok on the ground to bleed. Dipping his hand into his pouch he was relieved that he had saved some potions from the last battle. Pulling the potion from his pouch he pressed its opened top to his lips. Pursing them the light liquid rolled down into his throat. The darkness became more intense as his lids slid shut, the soft fluff of red hair falling back onto the dirt. Wounds became shallow, as the drink’s potency devoured the pain. Sighing, his head rose from the ground. Patting his clothes off of dirt and clapping his hands he ran off into the darkness to kill some more demons.

Death was never fun. You sat on the sidelines, watching everyone fight while hoping that someone might choose to resurrect you. Still, in the heat of battle one man down was often overlooked. Still, there would no rush to get their attention. Even if the wizard was revived, his magic was obviously not going to damage them, and his SP would be at zero anyway. No…coming back only to act as a healing aid would not be worth it. Judging by the blows the crystal creatures were withstanding, his staff wouldn’t be very effective as an offensive weapon either.

Until that time came however…there was that little ball of sunshine fluttering about. If the mage couldn’t help in the present, it might not hurt to gather some information for the rest of the mission. Sure, she could be pure evil, but there was always a chance she could say something helpful…maybe. The ghost approached the mystical creature, addressing her pleasant, at least for the moment.

"I have some questions, but I suppose I should start at the right place. What would your name be miss? Mine would be Rayo."

"My name is Elin, Rayo. At least, I'm pretty sure it is. I've been down here so long, away from my sisters for so long, I've had no one to speak to me."

The spell caster prayed internally that this wasn’t going to be a persona with a hermit complex. Exchanging recipes for soup made by tiny little animals didn’t seem like the best way to pass the time. Still…how many sisters were there with this one before? If they all glowed and more could be gathered on the way, this segment of the quest might be over much sooner than anticipated.

"I see...this home that you're trying to return to, where would that be? After all, even once we find our way out of this particular mess, we'll still need to escort you back properly."

"We have a conclave in the forest, my sisters and I. Or used to. No telling if it's been destroyed by now... But that's okay, with you here, we can surely rebuild!"

After what happened in Mac Anu, the group seemed much more likely to be the destroyers of it. With the forest being burned earlier, they might have already done the deed. If it came up there would definitely be talking about monkeys wielding flamethrowers and matches, most definitely indeed. Besides, what lightning mage would carry around fire producing devices…his Expert Wand would stay away for the remainder of their trek with Elin. Hopefully she hadn’t noticed it earlier on.

"Well, there is one among us who I think would definitely be able to help us make that happen if convinced...so that shouldn't be too much trouble. Why did you go so far in this direction though? Surely you would be well acquainted with the woods surrounding your home."

"Foul Man! He tempted us! We lived happily in our home, we did! Never wanting for anything, never needing anything... Until he showed up. At first we refused, we wanted nothing to do with his gifts. Then one of us followed... then another... until soon there were only five of us left. We begged to have out sisters returned to us, but he said they were too happy where they had gone. So we followed him, one day, when he left. We found our sisters, twisted, broken, dead. He had been sapping their powers and killing them! He noticed us then, and we fled, looking for hiding places... I don't know where my other sisters went, we split up, but I know this is no hiding place. It's a prison!"

Something about her speech reminded him of something, but the boy wasn’t sure of what. Maybe an old movie or something, it seemed like some sort of overused plot device. The hackers…maybe Xenobia had a penchant for old movies? Rayo had to suppress a laugh so that the fairy didn’t get offended by mistake. She was still necessary for further questioning.

"...Back where we had come from, before joining up with this path, there were six different routes. Do you know anything about them? It's possible your sisters followed some of them, as you did this one. Also, this man? What did he look like, did he have a name? What kind of gifts did he give? Finally, what sort of powers did your sisters possess? If this man truly has drained them of their powers, he might be in possession of them himself now."

"He was horrible, terrible! He seemed so handsome, but it was all a lie! We fled him, we split up... I don't know where they all went. He.... he never said his name, not that I can remember."

Handsome…vague and useless. No name, no real description…there was no way to identify the man. Almost as if something was suddenly clear, his mind was reminded of the posted message. The last line of the main sign, was this the true meaning behind the foe made of a friend? Was it simply this girl’s experience, or would they too encounter this man? Still, Elin herself could be the troublemaker they were warned of. There was also nothing claiming there would only be one instance of that meaning hindering them. This man, the fairy, his own spells…the entire field could have been themed around the idea of betrayal.

"Do you know anything about a source of information in these lands? We're looking for that...and if we did find it, it's possible that it might help us find your sisters for you all the faster."

"I don't know, I'm sorry... All I knew was out home, before he came, and it was so sudden when I ended up in here..."

Oh well, it wasn’t as if she’d just point him towards the hub. Still, was it too much to hope she’d give a memorized speech like the one in his mind? ‘Oh, that hub? Okay. Go down two blocks, make a right at the traffic light, keep going for three miles, make two lefts, the second one is pretty soon after the first, and just follow signs for Hacker Haven until you reach it.’ No, nothing that simple. Even then though, it could simply be a trap. There was no point talking with Elin any longer…now just to find a way out of this conversation…

A glimmer of light caught his attention. Ryok was barely visible, enacting the another skill Rayo had read about in his book on thunder inside The World. Rai Drive…right? Wait, if the heavy blade could use lightning in a form that wasn’t be countered…

Gaining Ryok’s attention, the wave master pointed behind him, desperately trying to get the swordsman to notice the gargoyle preparing it’s own shadowy ambush. Despite being busy fending off the fiend, Ryok still found time to bring the wavemaster back from the other side, something he was grateful for.

"Alright, now if you'll excuse me...I think it's time that I help clear away my murderers."

Before Rayo hadn’t been sure on how to help out, but if Ryok could use Rai moves there was a tactic that would work wonders here. The mage absorbed one of his Mage’s Souls, recovering enough SP to make his plan work. Snapping his fingers at the savior, Ap Raio activated and raised his thunder stat by 10 points. Activating one of his speed charms on the same target, Ryok would be much deadlier than just a few minutes ago.

Turning around and setting his eyes into a glare, the mage picked up the Crystal Gargoyles he could see, setting them as the targets for a spell that wouldn’t fail to activate. Starting off with a pair that were close enough together to be affected, his right arm motioned at them.

“Dek Raio.”

Failing to be hit with the lessening effect of his own spell, Dek Raio spells started going off like a shot gun in the hands of a crazy old man in the woods with a lot of anger to be released. A lone gargoyle, another statue, a beast leaping through the air; again and again the spell went off.

“Dek Raio! Dek Raio! Dek Raio!”

After a total of seven weakening incantations, his work was done. All, or at least nearly all of the monsters had been hit by the spell. His SP was at about 30 by this point, but it would be reserved for the moment until it was enough for an Ol Repth to help keep someone alive. Hoping that Ryok would hear him, the enchanter shouted out over the sounds of the battle going on around them.

“Ryok, use your thunder skills! Everyone, avoid magic and focus on thunder based skills!”

Hoping both his warning and suggestion would be paid their due, Rayo pulled out his trusty staff, preparing to guard himself from any of the creatures remaining. His eyes only noted two corpses on the ground so far, but the darkness of the room made that hard to confirm for sure.
