After pulling his little pranks, Devil seemed to care little for attacks. Rayo’s Rue spell stuck him without even a turn of head, as the creature performed a very dramatic and feigned yawn. The wavemaster bored him, as did the rest of the group so far. While Devil used Wood, Fire, and Darkness, most would presume that Earth, Water, and Lightning would be his weaknesses. Well, perhaps that was correct, but regardless they didn’t deal much damage either way. Percent wise, barely 2 had been scraped off.

Silk’s fist-fighter signature move caught Devil squarely, but was returned with equal vigor. Silk found himself the target of fire-coated fists, a Kiwami shoved back at him. Hard to hear over the sounds of combat, but Devil was laughing, even enjoying himself. After the Kiwami move was over, Devil paused, posed in a very awkward-looking angle, his long limbs jutting at odd angles. Canti swooped in on him, but was evaded by straightening up. The skill still grazed the garish boss, but nothing significant came of the attack.

The arrow that the archer sent flying was charged with Rai power, but that seemed to matter little. Devil caught up the arrow, stopping for a moment in inspection. He held the arrow close, examining its design and its power. Then, with a twirl of fingers, pulled it back on a bow formed out of darkness. It was let fly and the bow disappeared to the nothing it had come.

Only once Phoenix used his special item did anything really seem to happen. The exceptionally bright flash of light was there and gone in a second, but would have left everyone in the room grasping for sight. Devil, who was inside it, wasn’t blinded… but his entire form was letting off steam.

Seemingly stunned, for the moment, Devil did nothing as Zan let off a string of Dek spells, each of which took effect. The attacks of the Shade, the MeRue Rom, and even Zan’s blade fell unheeded on the figure of the guardian. Senna’s following spell, as well, was taken with no heed.

Then, finally, it was as if Devil had been snapped out of some kind of trance. A loud groan escaped the mask of the creature, followed by a frustrated shaking out of limbs.

”That was more than I expected from you, but I should have known better.” He raised his arms, and thunder crashed, the sound filling the room. The sounds of muted rain followed, despite there being no such phenomenon present. ”Sticking your nose into affairs of others has a price! The stakes are higher than you think, it’s time to roll the dice!” A clattering of dice filled the room next, the rain and thunder dying back. Over each player’s head a die appeared, rolling and clattering on nothing. ”You won’t be so lucky this time around! You’ll disappear, not a trace to be found!”

Half of the population of the room found themselves surrounded by a haze as the dice slammed home into random numbers, a haze that faded… themselves with it. To half the room, nothing had happened. To the other half… all the world had changed.

Lighteria, Zhao, Canti, Armina, Silk, Hacorie – Normal room
Zan, Senna, Phoenix, Rayo, Sekai, Zavier – Reverse room

Those with the haze around them are teleported to the Reverse room. If I didn’t mention your name, you probably haven’t posted in a long time anyways.

The haze faded from the eyes of the transported group, but everything was different. They were in the same positions they had been, as was the boss… but everything was the opposite. Not placement, but colors. It was like being inside a photo negative, or having the colors reversed in an image.

What’s more, was mechanic had shifted. The Deks in place over Devil were no longer Deks, but Aps. Things just got a great deal tougher.

------------------------ooc:
So begins the real boss fight.

Devil – Original
Level 50
HP: 6,000

Devil – Reverse
Level 50
HP: 6,000

To be clear. For those in the “Normal” room, everything is exactly the same as it was before, you just have fewer allies to fight with. For those in the reverse room, everything is flipped. Including your abilities. Fire spells come out as water, darkness as lightning, aps as deks, and so on. Rayo, this doesn’t affect your blue magic; if Devil cases a fire spell and it hits you as a water spell, it will still register in your blue magic as a fire spell.

For those of you with key items, their effects are unchanged.

Devil himself acts exactly the same in both sides. So if he casts a spell on, say, Zan, Canti will see him cast a spell on nothing. He occupies the same space in both places, whereas each of you only occupy one or the other.

The Deks cast on him are still Deks in the Original room, but are Aps in the Reverse room. If you cast an Ap on him in the reverse room, it will be a dek, but in the original room it will take effect as an Ap.

Also, there is no communication between the two rooms. Flashmails won’t be sent until after the rooms merge again, Armina’s telepathy only works with people in her room, and so on.

There are probably more scenarios that I could come up with and explain here, but that’s a lot of writing, so this will have to do.

The fight between Lighteria and Canti had been painful, though not terribly burdensome on the HP. A single Repth would cure up any injuries, but pride forces the twin blade to simply sit and suck it up for a little while. Loathe as he was to admit it, he'd learned something from the fight. Despite having laughed heartily before when it happened, when a guy is kicked in the crotch... it really isn't funny. Like, not at all.

It's about the time he seriously considers healing that the five door open, bringing back a good bulk of the team, each one apparently coming back triumphant judging from the sister's demeanor... until they found the dead one. The twin blade doesn't move throughout the event, simply watching and thinking. After all, this could all be part of Mary's trap for them... lord knows it enjoyed screwing with their heads. Still, there was an over-all feeling of sincerity Lighteria felt that he simply couldn't shake off. He groans inwardly, not wanting to feel any semblance of sincerity right now and he curls up slightly, head down. It's after a few seconds that a necklace falls into his lap... Elin's necklace. The twin blade lifts his head in surprise, only to see the sisters forming hands and disappearing in a flash of light, leaving the group with nothing but the trinkets and their questions. Lighteria stares down at the jewelry for a moment, mind wandering over the whys and hows, before he shrugs and clips it around his neck.

With Kit walking by his feet, the twin blade follows the rest of the group. Past the locked and immediately unlocked door and into a room that's straight out of a haunted house... with a ridiculous looking devil to go along with it. The group was seemingly content to blast away at the devil as soon as he started taunting. While this was fine with Lighteria, he'd had about enough fighting since the annoying ash soldiers Still, the attacks didn't seem to be doing much, hanging back and avoiding damage may not be the best idea. He watches the others as they throw attacks at the devil, mostly having them countered or flat out fizzle. It isn't until after the thing recoils and starts thundering spouting that the twin blade is forced into action. Before he can react, the sound of thunder and rain fill the room. Kit's ears arc backwards a bit to try to block the noise and Lighteria glares towards the ceiling to see the thunder and rain... only he sees... dice? For a second it looks as though the devil was about to hit them with oversized twelve siders, but the dice themselves simply stop in mid air. There's flashes... a sudden a haze... and.... nothing?

...The heck was THAT all about?

Lighteria blinks a few times, wondering what the point of that was, and looks back towards the ground. ...Something was different. He glances around the group a moment and lifts an eyebrow.

....Oh.

His eye catches sight of Canti for a second and he curses under his breath. Luck just isn't on his side today, apparently. Still, through all the junk that was thrown at them, Lighteria has accumulated quite a bit of rage, most of which he's glad to express.

"Enough with the lame hat tricks!" Had Lighteria been normal today, he probably would have used some sort of nimble trick with his blades or perhaps find a way to use the terrain against the devil. Instead, he falls back upon spell casting and blasting the hell out of him... if only for the fact that he can't directly choke him to death. "GiRai Don!" He shouts, streaks of lightning barreling down from the sky onto the devil's head.

And so it happened again. The group of them were up against a creature who seemed to shrug off attacks the way a normal person shrugged off raindrops in a spring shower. Physical, magical, any of it. The only thing, in fact, that really seemed to get any attention out of their adversary was whatever Phoenix had done – and what THAT was, she had no idea. All she knew was it had bothered the crap out of her eyes. The entire room was bathed in a wash of green for a short while after it, a result that left her scrubbing ineffectively at her eyes with the back of one arm.

Well, they had unleashed enough to bring down a herd of elephants, and the only thing they REALLY seemed to have accomplished was pissing it off, if its short speech, complete with theatrical sound effects, was any indication. Whatever Phoenix had done, in addition to stunning the creature, had hurt it in some way – maybe not physically, but it was more than deer-in-the-headlights. She mentally thanked him. Even if it just brought danger or got them killed, she supposed it was better than bouncing spells and skills off it for the rest of eternity.

But now the dice were rolling, in accordance with its will. There were several literary (and not-so-literary) references her mind could have found itself drawn to, but the place it ended up was unexpected even to the Long Arm. A series of short stories she’d found online in her early months of college asserted themselves.

The main character, a female preacher who traveled the ruined, apololyptic West with a Bible and a gun, often found herself in situations where there was no good choice. She dealt with the fallout of that a lot, as people claimed that a person of religion should be able to find all the answers needed in the Bible.

“Anyone who thinks every answer can be found in a book, ANY book, is a high-order idiot,” she’d proclaimed after one incident. “God gave us His word. But before that, LONG before, he gave us two other things – a brain and luck. If you want to abandon the older gifts for the newer, or the newer for the older, you’re welcome to it. But the wisest person is the one who uses both. God would never give us a world where there was only one right, and the Devil would never give us one where there was only one wrong.”

It had always struck Liss, this preacher character. She was always portrayed as devout. She always helped where needed and never acted to kill anyone. She was quick and she was compassionate, but her philosophy placed luck on par with intelligence. The very idea might be considered blasphemy to many of her more religious friends, who believed that God created all things in the world as they were. The idea that God would create a randomized agent which was as important to faith and life as the mind or the word of God could be, for some, a radical departure. It would mean that whatever good works you did, good might not always come to you and whatever evil you did, you might not get earthly punishment.

Her reasoning had been simple. If God had set down one set of things which were always Good and another which were always Bad, and had static life responses for each, people would know what they had to do to get what they wanted in life from God. No one would do evil things if it meant an evil would be visited into your life in equal measure. Deeds and actions, the sum of a human’s life, would no longer define them as a good or bad person, but simply a robot, performing set actions to receive the reward.

True judging of character required chance, the preacher had said, because if no good deed goes unpunished, you can tell the truly good people because they’re the ones who keep trying.

Liss (and thus Senna) respected that a great deal. Unfortunately, she was also given a good few seconds to remember this little tidbit from her younger days as the dice rolled.

And then everything changed.

For a moment, as the sudden mist cleared, she wanted to rub her eyes again. It was as though her vision has decided to just go wonky without so much as a by-your-leave. Darks had grown light, and the spots of illumination were guttering blackly along the wall. No, not black, but dark, she saw after a moment. All in blue and purple. Strange. Mysterious. A glance down showed her sleeves to be almost glowing bright. What in the world?

Another look at the room itself – which now looked oddly bright to her eyes – showed that she was standing with five other Freedom Fighters, and none of those she particularly would have chosen. A moment’s panic sent a shiver down her back and arms. Where were they? Silk? Canti? Hac? They were just gone. Was that what the thing had meant? You’ll disappear? And then the dice. Chance. The only truth had divided them in two, and some were gone. How gone?

She penned (penned? What pen?) a quick Flashmail, having no way of knowing that it wasn’t going to get out of this version of the room just yet whatever shape its intended recipient was in.
To: Canti
From: Senna
Subject: <none>
Hey. You guys okay?
And as attention went back to the room, she found her anxiety was growing again. Everything had failed, but the group had been more or less avoiding spells in the thing’s chosen colors. Well, who knew. If Adventurers taught us anything, it was not to judge too much by colors when deciding what spells to use. As such, when she focused on the thing again, she had the Archspear in her hands, and the spell that formed on her lips, and a second later near (hopefully beneath) the enemy was one she didn’t use too often – Ani Zot.

She was as surprised as anyone when black and purple lightning shot up from the ground instead of the expected darkness spires.

Well, wasn’t that interesting?

She actually checked to make sure she had the right weapon in her hands, that she’d chosen the right spell. She didn’t even HAVE Rai Zot.

Well, while she didn’t quite see what had happened, she decided to blame it on the room. It had changed everything. Why not the spell as well, switching it to the opposite. Another thing to keep track of. But on the bright side, taking stock of who was left – Zan, Rayo, Sekai, Zavier and Phoenix – it had left many of the ones most likely to actually cause it some harm.

Perhaps chance could work both ways.

(Was it him or did it seem as though there was nothing at all effecting this strange devil-guy? The answer, which came naturally, was this... 'No, you stupid git. OF COURSE he's being effected! It's just...well...' And in your inner-monologue, you must ask yourself 'Well, what, pray-tell?' to that drifting-off inner voice. And it, in its embarassment, must look up at you and say, 'It's just not doing very MUCH, is it? I feel kind of silly'. And that was the problem. Canti barely even nicked the bastard, and while the others had hit dead-on...they weren't doing much either. The Twin Blade, to his credit, at least had the good sense not to go into one of those suicide power-dives that ends up smacking his face right into something. Pulling up, he took to the air again...just as something rather unexpected appeared before him. After some strangely cliche'-sounding words from our villain sponsor, Canti was surprised to find...dice?)

Canti: Okay...sure. Dice floating above my head as I float in mid-air. Yyyup. I'm losing my mind.

(A detached voice in his head could've probably reassured him by saying that no, he was not insane, but she appeared to be absent at the moment from the confines of his head, so...Canti was on his own. Anyway, after the dice rolled and the villain said...something - Hey, he wasn't paying attention, alright? - the Twin Blade saw several of his comrades engulfed in a haze and then they...disappeared! Not that they just simply disappeared. This was the kind that required suspense and awe. Half the people in the room just vanished. Senna, Sekai, Zan, Rayo... Dammit, almost everybody he knew well enough were GONE, leaving him with emo-bitchy-Blademaster, Zhao, and some people he didn't know jack about!)

Canti: No offense to them, just...yeah, I dunno a thing about 'em.

(Nothing had changed in the room besides the popuklation...and the Devil. Its HP was now less than before, which meant that there WAS an effect...of sorts. Canti wasn't sure what it was that was going on here, but their boss was weaker now, and he had just come to realize something. It was playing with them, right? It teased and taunted and flaunted and so on. The lousy bastard danced around like the clown that Lighteria thought Canti should be. And the fact that he was now associating that bitch with all this REALLY pissed him off. But anyway...it occurred to him...this thinking boss was getting warned by the stupid program making them shout out their dumbass attacks. Meanwhile, if someone was just to shut his trap and attack from behind... It might work. Canti knew that the calling-out-the-names-of-your-attacks thing was kind of dumb, anyway.)

Canti: Okay...so how to do this.

(The Marionette-Devil did some funny things. It looked as though it were hallucinating, acting upon things that weren't there. Since Canti didn't fully-understand what was going on, the idea of the over-lapping boss thing was beyond him for the moment, and thus he was not aware that his other comrades were in a look-alike reverse-room where he was not present. He was also not aware of Senna's message to him, because it was put on hold by the separation effect. No, what Canti saw...was an opportunity. Distracted, it was prevented from avoiding him as easily as before. Therefore, some number of feet away, Canti simply dropped down to the ground and ran in low at the Devil-bastard, attempting to back-stab it with thunder-charged Fuse Blades as many times as freakin' possible, not uttering a single word, tease, taunt, catchphrase, or anything like that. Good thing he'd gotten those out of his system BEFORE getting into battle. And that gender-bender thought he was out of his mind... HAH!)
I'll have a doozy of a sig later, I swear. It'll reflect ".hack//CODE" an' everything.

Hey look! A profile! It's got items and stats and things! Cool! If it isn't fully up to date, it will be, so don't worry 'bout it.

Phoenix’s light attack was the only thing affected the Marionette Devil as it let off some steam literally. The Devil was surprised by the attack and decided to be more serious now as it rolled dice above all of the Freedom Fighter’s heads. As the dice was rolling, a haze began to surround Phoenix. Oh great. Haze is never a good thing in a fight unless you’re causing the haze. Once the haze subsided, the blademaster noticed that the room went a complete cosmetic 180 along with half of the fighting force missing.

Okay, it seems that we have been transported into funky color land. No…

Phoenix took a quick look at the devil and noticed the APs above its head. I swear those were Deks a second ago. Right, Suzaku?

You are correct, Kazuma-sama. They were Deks right until the haze surrounded us. This room somehow reverses our abilities. So if I cast Ap Corv on you now, you would be weakened instead of strengthening you. Look at Senna’s attack. She tried to cast Ani Zot and got a dark color version of Rai Zot.

Maybe my Wind Blade still acts in the same way in this room since it doesn’t have a reversal to it. I’m not sure if I use the key item in this room that it will be reverse into a darkness dome. Also I rather not waste a charge in this room. Maybe the others who had the fae items can do something with them. I should probably suggest that now.

Flashmail

To: Sekai, Zavier
From: Phoenix

I know you guys got those items from the fae. I suggest using them now as I rather not waste one of my two charges left on my ring. That’s just a friendly suggestion.

End Flashmail

Suzaku, I think it’s time for you to actually join the fight. Let’s do a double attack. We got to do something while those two try to figure out if they should use those key items or not.

Phoenix took the necklace off and threw it into the air. It transformed into a bird which was the blademaster’s guardian, Suzaku. The bird flew towards the Marionette Devil and cast what supposed to be BiVak Rom became MeRue Rom instead due to the dynamics of the room. While the Marionette Devil was distracted by the MeRue Rom, Phoenix swung his sword vertically and attacked with his Wind Blade. It appears that the Wind Blade was not affected by the reversal and went towards the Devil like normal.

I just hoped that I don’t waste another charge so soon if no one else decides to act.

Zan watched his attacks unfold without evasion, without even the barest attempt to fend them off. Most might have been happy at that, believing themselves to have executed something speedy, something effective. Zan lacked that particular hubris (now, anyway) and saw what was going on for what it truly was. The Marionette Devil was just laughing everything off. Literally. What the lycanthrope believed to be one hell of an initial offense was being chuckled at by a French clown, some misbegotten harlequin. Damn it. The curious side of him wanted to inquire as to how, to find out a way for them to sidestep that particular obstacle, but the anger the Devil's brush off inspired was stronger. After his recent indulgence in the Beast out on the field, Zan found his willingness to indulge in the anger slightly...less. It wasn't like he was being forced, like the old days, but more along the lines of giving in - it just felt so good to eat at that anger, to lash out in fury. The Lycan planned to do just that, weapon arched back for a flurry...that was suddenly denied by a course of events he only barely understood.

One more the weapon was lofted, ready to do some damage, and the next the colors were all wrong and half the party was gone. Inversion, it seemed, was the fault for this. A look to the Marionette Devil's status revealed a flip of the Deks he had applied to the bastard not a few moments ago. They were opposite, changed. Rather than risk further magical mayhem, however, the Heavy Blade decided to stick to the physical stuff...for now. If watching the others around him inspired some brilliant idea that would make magic a good idea again, then hell, he'd go for it. Now? Well, now seemed better used gauging his surroundings, checking how extensively things had...changed. It looked like the same place they had been in, but a photo negative version instead. It was hard to watch, to be honest. Keeping his eyes open confused them, told him things were a little off kilter. Things might have kept there serious tone, had the lycanthrope's eyes not shifted to find the pink-clad girl. Knowing full well, from his experiences with her, that she probably hated such a girly color, he couldn't help but laugh. It was an inward sound, barely a cough of sound from him. Again, there might have been hope for composure, but it wasn't too long before he was staring at Nulus.

A very, very pink Nulus.

"Don't-"

"AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! You're PINK!" Laughter continued for a second...before it was turned back on him.

"Look at your shirt, dumbass!" Mockery from the Shade now.

"Oh, fuck me."

Zan's shirt, one that was a nice shade of green before, blended pink with the stark white of his newly colored trenchcoat. A glance to his hair revealed blue, something that made him mentally gag. God, now he looked like one of those would-be punkers that slouched around back in high school wasting space and 'not conforming' while looking like every other punker out there. The trend hadn't stopped in decades, it seemed. And now...well...now he was one of those people. Furiously running his hands through his hair, the Heavy Blade seemed to try to wipe the color out. Maybe it was some sort of freaky dye, something the Devil had done to the whole room before snatching away half the group. It was a desperate enough contemplating that Zan began to let himself believe it. Only the actions of those with him, their willingness to fight, stole it away from him. Damn it, he needed to get over the vanity bullshit and just kick this thing's ass. It was a sound plan, a good plan, but why wasn't it sitting well with him? The fact that most of their group had poofed away was nothing short of nerve-wracking for him. If the Marionette Devil could just kill them so effortlessly, without even motion or noise, how screwed was he?

But...maybe that wasn't it.

Oh no, that would be too simple for the Elites and their Hub bullshit. Something else was happening here, something more important. If the group he was in was in a visual-negative of the place they had just been in, then maybe others were on some alternate field thing where everything was still as it should be. Yea, that made sense. Every Flashmail he sent to them, however, only bounced back and denied him access to them. How isolated had he become? Did it matter? Not necessarily. The Lycan found himself much more concerned with what this meant for victory. If the opposite thing played out by his Deks-turned-Dos was true for anything, then whatever Zan did to correct the problem would probably only hurt those on the other side. That, or he thought about this shit too much. Either way, it still enforced his belief that magic shouldn't be used, not by him. Maybe when someone came up with some radically brilliant plan to use the opposite-ness against the Devil. Yea, that would be a good time to toss out some magic again. Or something similar.

Contemplation time, however, was very much over. Now was the time for kicking some clownish ass. If nothing else, it would distract the sonuvabitch while everyone else did something that actually used their brains and not their brawn. Usually Zan was all for that. Rarely ever did raw strength get them anywhere with the Elites. Thing was, the Lycan didn't particularly care right then. He needed to vent his frustrations somehow and, well, rushing the boss head on seemed like a good way to do that (and get himself killed). If he was going to do it, however, he was going to do it with some strategy tossed in the mix for good measure. For this Nulus was called upon, their mental link still active, still making verbal communication sluggish and pointless. What plan would be fitting? What could they possibly do that would change the way the Devil had reacted during their last assault? Nothing really came to mind, which just brought Zan back to his idea of playing decoy. Would it get him killed? Most likely. Hell, slaughtered was often a better word in similar cases. Either way, that would still act as some sort of distraction, right? Whatever brain happened to be with the, would patch things up nice and smooth.

Leaving that job to said brain, whoever that person might be in their group, Zan charged behind Nulus, his form obfuscated by the looming, shrouded figure of the Shade. The moment they were upon the boss, Nulus flew over, eight inch, steel-like claws hacking away at the Devil's head (or trying to). Such an assault was meant to draw attention upwards as Zan slid in, six-foot slab of steel shoved forward; an attempt to bury the High Forger in his gut, if the thing had a gut. Such was a time that the lycanthrope would call upon a tactic used against Primal before, hands and feet sprouting through with claws, shoes kicked aside to reveal the glinting nails that threatened to tear apart flesh and bone alike. The fury that he wanted to indulge in before found him then, limbs lashing out at his foe, claw and blade seeking out blood, pain and damage on the whole. Nulus followed suit with similar, rapid slashes to the back of the Marionette Devil, hoping the second pincer attack would be much more effective than the first. Zan was tempted to ask Nulus to unleashed another Dek Do...but that'd come later. First he'd see if they'd even live to cast a spell in the first place.

Here was to hoping someone else had a better plan.

Half of them were missing, not just ghosted, but entirely out of sight. The amount of people one could worry about was constantly changing at the hub. Nall and Nighthand weren’t truly within the reach of a helping hand, mere projections of themselves. Whatever Phoenix had done seemed to be linked with the monster, but the specifics were unknown for now. The only definite benefit of the change was the notable decrease in their foe’s health meter. Before it had been outlandish, now skirting on levels that didn’t seem impossible. The maximum total appeared to be reset to a smaller amount, so it wasn’t a damage move the blademaster pulled before. A level drop perhaps?

Watching on as Senna took the chance to show off a rarely seen Rai Zot, the mage was subject to a stray thought or two on what equipment she possessed that allowed the user the capability to wield that sort of lightning. Something rare no doubt that the group would never have a chance at due to the lack of their ability to join in on any official events. The wave master wasn’t even privy to half of the general announcements the system could make on the subject.

“GiRai Rom!”

Instead of a classic favorite, a never before witnessed form of shadow magic took place instead. A tornado of skulls, death facing in from every direction as the bones whipped around the jester. The darkness element wasn’t his specialty, but that was one spell the mage hadn’t seen before. What did you call it? MeAni Rom? BiAni Rom? RaAni Rom? …The third one was excluded on the basis of sounding stupid, but it still didn’t make sense. It was difficult to select a spell that didn’t belong on his spell list, much less magic that was unknown to him. Sure, a sizeable portion of his choices shouldn’t technically be there, but this wasn’t one of them. The level of power and the style of the maneuver were true to his selection though. The only difference, though a major one, was element.

Zan had charged in against the monster and seemed to plan on staying in there. What could the caster unleash that would be what he wanted to that wouldn’t annihilate both targets… or most likely just Zan?

Pulling out one of the scrolls the wizard stocked up on before the field, he unraveled the piece of parchment and made the Devil his target.

“Night’s Sun! The light of Darkness, water and wind’s pride! The Moon!”

Sure, the theatrics weren’t really necessary. ‘The Moon’ would have sufficed, words weren’t even needed. Given this was an all powerful boss character and not an average monster, chances were the status of sleep wouldn’t even affect it. If it did though, Rayo definitely said all of that to rub it in. Definitely. If the Jester couldn’t move, then Zan could tear away at it to his heart’s content, but if not…it was necessary to keep the brat still so he could anyway. Rotating the Moonstruck in a circling motion, Merrows Ch was sort of what he expecting to rise up with tidal waves splashing around the two combatants, with a donut shaped blast radius at least. If the boss didn’t want to avoid Zan’s attacks, most of the water wouldn’t touch it. If however it ran away in a stupid fashion, a whole lot of water would be smashing into it. Or fire. As Vulcan Ch appeared instead, the plan wasn’t really changed. Fire instead of water, all it did was ruin the moon motif that was set.

Hissing as the darkness element he'd sent after her lodged itself into her shoulder and evaporated, Kira's free hand reached up and held the injured area out of pure habit as she moved herself out of the way of any other assault headed her way. A flash a second later damn near blinded her, arm moving up to shield her eyes from the light before it faded just as quickly as it'd begun. Lowering her arm and narrowing her eyes, damning the fact she had the stupid camera dots in her vision, she watched the steam rolling off of Jersey Devil... well, not that she knew what a Jersey Devil was, just thought the nickname suited the not so bouncy bastard.

What the hell kind of attack had that been and where could she learn it? Douchebag Devilton didn't seem to appreciate that little trick from the red head who'd thrown a fit earlier and went off into a tirade of his own. Something above her head had her ducking and diving to one side in mid-air to try and get away from it; not that it would work all things considered with the way her luck had been in this damn field.

A die? What the hell was a freakin' die doing there above her head and- ah shit what was with the blurry vision and haze all of a sudden?

Shaking her head and holding her head, hissing as she'd moved her injured shoulder, and why was she hissing so much, she wasn't a damn cat, and looked around her. It took a few rapid blinks to clear the blur from her vision... and a few more, longer moments before she decided to pinch herself to see if she was dreaming or under an illusion of some kind. The whole damn field had suddenly gone batshit insane; half of the party had vanished completely and the color scheme was so completely off that she didn't understand what the hell was going on and-

Everything turned silent in her mind as she caught a glimpse of one of the gloves on her hands and physically froze at the sight. Black skin with a bluish tint, black hair with a...beige-ish hue where the darker highlights were, black wings, white and blue armor and pink where the color green once stood on her clothing. Somewhere in the darkest corner of her mind, she could hear Momoko laughing hysterically, clapping her hands together in delight and proclaiming that they needed to get her hair into pigtails and take a picture of the two of them since they'd be twins at last. Pink. Of all the goddamn forsaken times to show her the stupid and damned color she hated with a passion equal to the hackers scattered through the game and of Trent himself; the field chose to inform her now of what happened when color was inverted and she was in a color that decisively let her know just how badly Merrows was probably laughing at her expense.

In case it wasn't clear by the horrified and disgusted expression on her face that she had a bit of a problem with the color pink, the way her head lowered, as if defeated, and her hands clenched into fists should have been a clear warning that one of two or three things was about to happen. Best case scenario was that Kira would do something particularly amazing and surprisingly level headed to impress even the girl watching closely within her own mind and the worst case scenario would be that the AI would completely flip her shit and go attacking with all the feverish fury a Fist Fighter and Heavyblade's overly aggressive bastard child would have in their attacks. For a long, long twenty three point three five seconds, Kira didn't do anything, didn't move, speak or even so much as twitch even as the sound of laughter from what could only be Fangs and Glowy having another one of their Alpha Male mockery contests.

Normally she'd be tempted to join them and considering it sounded like Glowy himself had gotten the shit end of the deal like she had, Kira likely would have whacked the human with the bow just to get him to scowl or some shit like that. Maybe an arrow in the ass, something to show that she wasn't anywhere near as amused as he was by this whole thing. Fed up with it and her eyes starting to smart from the sight of all the pink on her person at the moment, Kira did the one thing she could think of to salvage her sanity and prevent herself from completely throwing the mother of all bitchfits.

Kira switched places with Sekai.

'Kira!'

More of an indignant wail than it was a protest. The AI distinctly hiding out like a chicken in the girl's mind, somehow forming some sort of 'stream' of water in the mental space they shared and began splashing water on her eyes and face.

Sorry little one; self-preservation and guarding against the threat to my sanity comes first.

'No one ever lost their sanity from being dressed in the color pink! You've come up with more convincing excuses than that before and- what are you doing?!.'

Kira shot the girl's slightly hazy form, the one resembling her mental self anyways since Sekai had to divide her attention between the battlefield and what was going on inside her mind, a rather rakish and sly grin before letting her hand drop from where she'd been fiddling with her shoulder and chest wrap. The garment itself slipped off and dropped to the ground as the stream turned more into a large lake like area and Kira's hands went for the four inch long, two inch wide green stone at the front of her blue and yellow skirt... pants... whatever kind of garment it was she wore on the lower half of her body. Her voice turned teasing, dropping in pitch and coming out more pronounced and suggestive as she paused at the wide eyes of the girl standing in shock.

I'm about to purify my body from having to wear that color; you'll be doing the same thing once we get out of this field and to an area I have in mind.

She paused for a moment, the glint in the pupil-less eyes turning into the all too familiar one that usually meant someone was about to be had and had properly.

Wanna join me little one? More than enough room for two if you catch my drift.

In this particular inverted field, a teal stain stole across the girls cheeks as the sound of a flashmail from someone in the field caught her attention and thankfully pulled her attention away from the sound of more fabric dropping to the 'ground' within her mind and an all too cheerful splash. Blinking away the burning in her eyes from staring into space, Sekai shook her head and opened the mail hurriedly, currently blue eyes sharply keeping track of where exactly the enemy was at the time and scanned the contents as quickly as she was able.

'Maybe he just assumed that I received an item?'

Another splash within her mind and an all too cheerful voice called out to either pass out and join her in the water or just try it out and use one of the two charges on the item she'd gotten already. Memo to self, Sekai noted silently, eyes closed and her patience dissolving rapidly; never let Kira have so much control over the shared mind space when she was in an odd and playful mood and especially when she was in such an obviously flirtatious mood. Sounds of explosions, likely magic spells, echoed in the background as she shook her head and began to prepare herself to try and help the people she was in this mess with... in anyway she could.

Fastening one of the earrings in one ear, the former Leviathan's Fang earrings going into her key items section of her inventory, and getting the other, admittedly more difficult one, into the second ear, Sekai shook her head and winced a little at the cold metal tapping against her jaw and neck. What the, a new ability in her skills list? Frowning to herself, the young Archer swallowed hard and grimly replaced her bow with a mahogany bow with several thorn like appendages jutting out at random all along the curve of the wood. Biting her lip and taking the arrow in her hand, she slid the shaft up and over her wrist to notch it in the string, moved the bow up and over her head to settle it where she needed it to be, aimed and fired. Her words were soft, nervous even when she spoke the name of the odd skill that had appeared in her repertoire and silently sent a prayer to any Gods that were watching over their party to please help her out.

“Six Shooter.”

A normal arrow; nothing special about it angled towards the enemy in front of her and hit... only to disappear without making so much of a dent in the thing's body. Disappointment and a definite sense of self-hatred began to surround the girl as she lowered the bow and prepared herself to apologize for her inability to be of any use to the party when a surge in magic suddenly caught her eyes. Undisturbed really by negative and inverted color scheme around them, six arrows appeared in a sort of circle around the Marionette Devil and hovered for a moment. One by one the arrows suddenly seemed to explode into living incarnations of their assigned element and shot forward in a collective effort, each one only milliseconds behind the other in the attack.

Sekai hovered there, blue eyes wide her bow back in her inventory due to the way both hands were currently clamped against her mouth in the traditional, almost comically stereotypical sign of someone who'd just gotten the shock of their lives. Though Kira was whistling with all the signs of someone who'd been damn near impressed at the nice light and elemental explosion the arrows had caused, something unusual seemed to catch the girl's attention and drew it away from the battlefield itself. Lowering her hands, she stared at the palm of her left hand in confusion as an oddly familiar feeling stole over her for a moment and, just for the briefest instant, she could have sworn she felt someone's hand squeezing hers and vaguely heard the sound of a familiar ringtone in her ears somewhere in the far, far distance.

Distracted, she looked around for the source of the tinny jingle almost frantically, brow furrowing in confusion as she failed to find where it was coming from. All around her and yet from nowhere at all... what was going on?

'...Mika-chan?'

Fireworks flew across Silk’s vision, the end result of a massive, double-fisted attack directly to his person. For several long moments, he couldn’t see or attack or really do anything besides stumble around ineffectively, trying desperately to grasp the catlike liquid grace and balanced usually associated with his class. As things became more and more lucid, the Fist Fighter saw that during his incapacitation, something drastic had occurred.

Someone had done something ridiculous with his or her hack, that much was certain. It had left some people in decidedly unusual situations, but in Silk’s case, things were exactly as they were. Still, there were also a few other observations to be made, not all of them positive.

A lot of people were missing for one. For another, the Devil actually had a reachable HP, and already the two most obnoxious Twinblades remaining in their room (what happened to those other guys?) were hard at work reducing the Devil to shreds of flesh.

The lightning charged assault was so bright that for a brief moment, Silk was forced to avert his eyes or risk losing his sight again. (He still wasn’t quite sure how the Devil had punched him; all he knew was that it hurt.) Electricity set the air afire as Lighteria’s GiRai Don blazed through the air towards the Devil, followed almost immediately by a vicious set of slashes from Canti’s similarly dangerous Fuse Blades.

The result was an electric display worthy of any Las Vegas show, with absurd amounts of throbbing static lines jumping here, there, and everywhere. Silk would add his own efforts to Canti’s, he resolved, and he leapt in beside the Twinblade to deal death and destruction with his Boxing Gloves. In a reckless assault, the Fist Fighter launched a dizzying variety of jabs, hooks, and uppercuts at the Devil, hoping that his attacks would be effective.

If all went well, the creature would be ready to die at any moment!

Fae is the key

Post by Nighthand » Thu Jun 14, 2007 9:54 pm

It was a measure of how much crap the group had gone through, when they showed just how quickly they were able to adapt to what would, under other circumstances, be a very distracting and very dangerous new situation. Really, who else but a group this unique would be largely unphased by being split up, half the group stuck in a place where spells were reversed?

Nighthand and Nall would have been proud, had they been in any position to see what was going on. Neither of them, however, were in the right place to see.

One by one, attacks landed on one or the other side of the boss. Lighteria’s thunder spell was taken without motion; Devil simply not even flinching under the assault. Senna’s next spell, cast on the other side of the boundary, continued the thunder energy… and still to no effect. Canti’s attacks, Suzaku’s spell… nothing really seemed to be working.

In fact, through the course of events, nothing at all even made the boss move. That is, except for a select few attacks. A pattern was emerging, in fact.

Phoenix’s Wind Blade, the special power he had so recently developed, forced the boss back a few steps. Those in the normal room would see it reel and stumble for no apparent reason.

The other attack also took place in the reverse room; Sekai’s special talisman being activated. The first shot of the Six Shooter struck with power more furious than anything else used this far. It didn’t matter that elements were reversed; all six were represented anyways.

Devil, his consciousness split between two separate and yet superimposed worlds, found that he only had to worry about one. He virtually ignored everyone in the Normal room, focusing instead on countering the two assaults that mattered.

Phoenix found himself the target of Darkness-formed Twinblades. Dark Dance, striking him with thunder elemental damage, would rise him into the air. A roundhouse kick delivered to his airborne form would send him crashing into the wall. The blademaster wasn’t dead, but he was close.

Sekai/Kira, whichever was in control at the time, found herself the target of the first real special attack Devil had unleashed. Apparently dealing enough damage to the boss made him angry enough to cause real damage in return.

”You use the power of the Fae against me! There was a reason I sealed them away!”

To those who had been to the field before, the statement would seem somewhat enigmatic. They had met Elin before, and during the boss battles then, she had done little more than flit around and light the way. Even so, apparently this boss had found them enough of a threat to seal them away. Which, also, was a curiosity. Why would a boss of a hacker’s hub be afraid of something like those Fae… and why would those Fae even exist on the field to begin with? Sadly, those seemed to be questions they wouldn’t be able to answer any time soon.

The Boss raised his arms above his head, his tail rising to point to the sky as well. A shining patter, the same as on the tip of his tail, formed in the air in front of him. He lowered an arm, pointing it at Sekai. Instinct told her to dive out of the way, but she found herself rooted to the ground.

Surrounding the outstretched arm, three sharpened logs appeared. All three burst into flame, and then were surrounded by darkness. One by one they shot into the immobile form of the archer. Though the elements were all reversed, the Gan, Rai, and Rue damage that struck the archer still did more than enough damage to put her down. Though those on the Normal side of the room witnessed the attack, they saw it strike nothing.

”This should teach you to use the powers of the Fae!”

And so went the battle.

Things just get worse it seems. From Lighteria's perspective, the Devil had simply bounced around and attacked thin air whilst screaming random angry taunts and scolds. And while the devil had hit nothing, it sure LOOKED like he'd beaten the ever-loving crap out of something... but who or what was his target? The twin blade squints one eye as he stares at the remains of the attack, his expression quizzical... and annoyed. Now it's quite possible that the devil could be screwing with their heads... again, but there was something about the way the monster had appeared so angry that deception just didn't seem plausible. Plus, there was really nothing to gain by attacking thin air to freak out the group. No, clearly it had hit something. Lighteria glances around for a moment at the group, mentally counting a few people.

That didn't hit anyone HERE. ...That means he had to be attacking one of the others. Which means somehow we're in the same place but can't see or interact with each other.

...Of course knowing that does nothing to help the situation. In fact, he could hit two of us at the same time depending on where we're standing.

The twin blade snorts with irritation. The devil was shrugging off magic and physical attacks like he was made of rubber and, despite his tricks becoming more transparent, the devil still holds all the cards. Even figuring out the situation does nothing to help... And the powers of the Fae? Lighteria may have received a necklace from the sisters but the powers it contains, if any, aren't clear apart from it apparently functioning as a key. Still, if his attacks are just going to be shrugged off to the point of being useless, something new was in order, right? Despite the face he'd MUCH rather just walk away from the entire ordeal, he knows that the devil most likely won't let him walk away... and how would he make it to this Marionette person if he leaves? ...No, despite his contempt for this battle in its entirety, he will have to stick it through and press forward. ...Just... how?

He glances down to the small golden necklace hanging against the collar of his shirt. His eye twitches lightly as he glances at his body, an unwelcome reminder of the situation he's in. Despite that, he lifts the necklace in his hand and stares at the five blue gems embedded in the locket's frame.

Kinda looks like teardrops.

Curious, he lifts his other hand and prods the teardrop in the center of the locket. To his surprise, the gem is somewhat squishy and slips from its casing with ease, turning into a usable item and leaving the locket nice and symmetrical. He blinks for a moment and holds the teardrop, trying to figure out what it does. A moment with the standard UI of The World reveals it's only supposed to be used on allies. Granted, with him being able to fully control his character he can use it on whoever he damn well pleases... problem is though, you can't really risk using a restoration item on an enemy half way through the fight.

"...Dammit, can't I do ANYTHING to this guy?" He mutters darkly, Kit busying herself by casting Repth on the lightning mage, since she'd noticed he'd taken a beating. With the kitten helping out, Lighteria grunts in irritation, pocketing the gem and resigning himself to the fight. Sure, his strongest spells had been shrugged off like a mosquito bite, but the devil can't be TOTALLY outside the parameters of The World. He's not immune, he has HP, and the previous Fae items haven't killed the devil outright. If nothing else, the twin blade can keep chipping away at its health. If everyone keeps trying, maybe they can get him down to a level where use of an item will simply finish the thing off.

That tactic in mind, the twinblade slips his raitei from his item pouch and grips the hilts. Considering elemental attacks had failed him, perhaps now was a good time to fall back on some low-end pure physical skills. ...Plus they cost less SP, something he's been draining rather quickly this fight. He rushes forward awkwardly, not really used to using weapon skills. But really, how hard could it be? Get in range. Use skill. Peice of cake. Left with that, he rushes forward, letting loose a Staccato attack as soon as he gets in range.

Whatever your philosophy of battle might be, there is one truth which cannot be avoided, and that is that one of the worst possible feelings in the world is being useless.

And yet, here they were. As far as she could tell, only two of their number were doing any good here.

"This is stupid," she muttered. If this was a game, it was a decidedly more foolish one than the last. First, they get funneled into a room, where only certain among them can take part I the proceedings. Then they get funneled forward again so… only a few of them could work toward the conclusion. Not to mention, the first fight gave them the ammo for the second fight. Of course, now several of those items were completely gone, as they were in the hands of now-absent team members Silk, Zhao and… who was the last one? Eh, it didn’t matter. Not here, and apparently therefore not helping.

She pulled a resurrect out of her inventory, uncorked it and used it on the member of their team who actually HAD drawn wrath. Well, one of two – again, the only two who could actually accomplish anything. Senna had skills in her inventory to slow it down and dull its defense and accuracy (once one took the switching into account), but hesitated to use those. It could just switch again, like her dek-to-ap already had.

So, it was the resurrect aimed at Sekai, with fingers crossed that it, like damage, was not reversed. After that, she just waited tensely. If they were intended to act as spectators and heal-bots, she supposed there was no real reason to deny the request, right?

Phoenix’s Wind Blade attack did had some effect on the Marionette Devil along with the fact that it was not affected by the room’s properties. He was right about the fae items being the key to defeat the Marionette Devil as it took some damage from Sekai’s fae attack. After that attack, the Devil took out its revenge on Phoenix first with a thunder-based Dark Dance which ended with a kick towards the wall.

While Phoenix was trying to regain his breath and well-being, the Devil initialized its own unique counterattack on Sekai for using the fae’s power. This counterattack was quite brutal which made him remembered how Primal’s attacks were unique and brutal. This creature was definitely one of Marionette’s creatures for sure. Even though the fae can hurt the Devil, the question was who created the fae? If Marionette created them, then why he created a weakness for his own minion? That did not made much sense to the blademaster but right now; the main task is to reunite the group by defeating the minion in question.

Phoenix cast La Repth on himself to heal most of the damage caused by the Devil. He figured that healing spells were not reversed here since the damage did not heal them. He realized that he must use another charge on the fae ring. He is not sure if the charge would bring them out of this crazy world but the fae’s power is about the only thing that affects the Marionette Devil except for his wind power. Phoenix doubted that the others would keep pumping out SP items for him to reuse his wind power when his SP is down to nothing. He charged towards the Devil to use the fae diamond ring once again. Even though he probably get a nasty counterattack from the Devil, it was better than doing nothing compared to the members without the power of fae to assist them. As he continued running towards the minion, Phoenix wrote a quick flashmail.

Flashmail

To: Everyone
From: Phoenix

Cover your eyes about….. now.

End Flashmail

Once the flashmail was sent to everyone, Phoenix was in range to use the diamond ring once again on the Marionette Devil. Another diamond on his ring became black as a dome of light engulfed the Marionette Devil. As the blademaster looked on, he began to taunt the Devil.

“So, I used the power of the fae on you once again. Are you going to lash out again because of some fairy power hurt you? Well let’s see if you can kill me because I will just rise up again.”

Looking around the room, a frightening realization came to the mind of the Heavy Blade who had yet to act against the boss. “Half the crew is gone...” he whispered as the obvious interpretation of the amount of allies at present stood at six. I guess trying to avoid battle this time around is inevitably impossible. Looks like I will have to fight...and win. Hacorie thought as his right hand slowly reached down to the leather strapped hilt protruding from his sheath. The instant his hand touched the thin, yet powerful blade, a white cloud could be seen emitting from the player’s mouth. His body had become cold do to the mysteries of the blade forged in a mixture of Tokkish water and ice.

“Let us defeat it with ease...” Hacorie said once again as he pulled the blade out of its sheathe, revealing a neon glow. As his hand inevitability shook a little from freezing, so did the blade. Each time it would move for just the minute amount, a trail of color, which matched the sword, would follow.

Stepping into a stance, Hacorie placed his right leg behind his left leaving about a shoulder-width gap between his two feet. Usually, at this point, Hacorie would be ready to run and assault a monster, but he wanted to get more speed for this attack. Quickly, he bent his front knee and leaned toward. His sword, the Oceanic Aura, became completely parallel with the ground with only a small inch of air in between the sword and floor. Next, Hacorie bent his back knee as well to where his knee almost touched the floor. With one, quick, flowing movement, the Heavy Blade pushed off with his back leg releasing himself from the track stance.

Easily into a sprint, due to the excess power from the push off, Hacorie’s grasp on his sword began to tense. His hands were now inseparable from the blade’s hilt. Nearing the boss, a feint word was whispered from the mouth of the character named Hacorie. “Rukimi...” Any player in The World who heard such a word would undoubtedly be saying an obscene gesture along with a chuckle. This was because it was not a real word or the name of a skill in which everyone was able to access. However, this Heavy Blade sword had the rare water-based Heavy Blade skill.

This skill was a level two version of Sohgasho. Thus, it consisted of two stabs, one in the upper abdomen, another lower abdomen. After the second slash, Hacorie slammed his sword downward and planted it into the ground. Pushing off from his legs, Hacorie leapt up into the air while shifting his weight to his hands. This let his body turn completely upside down, performing a handstand on the hilt of the sword. With a small exhale, the Heavy Blade dropped forward as he brought the sword behind his head. Reshifting his weight back to his feet, Hacorie slashed vertically downward toward his opponent, the Marionette Devil.

Smiling, Hacorie knelt to the ground as the rings on his wrist began to glow a dark and ominous blue. “MeRue Rom!” Hacorie yelled as a glyph shot out from the ground and encircled the Marionette Devil with a wide radius. Slowly, winds began to pick up in the room as shards of ice appeared from thin air. Around and around the shards began to fly as the winds began to gain speed and turned into a violent tornado of icy death. With a brisk smile, the feeling of how much fun battle was, came to the mind of Hacorie, but this sensation was interrupted by a voice echoing in his mind.

You know, I do need to stretch my wings every once and awhile. I have been cooped up in here this entire time. Can’t you at least let me release some power? I am really bored just watching you.

Sorry, not yet. I cannot allow you to be out just yet. There is no need for it. Remember that it takes away from my energy. I cannot fight with full force if you are out, but do not worry. I will let you out sometime.

All right, I trust in your judgement.

Why?

Again, I stood watching my comrades face unbelievable danger. Danger that could kill them – and me – in a matter of moments. And I couldn't move. I was frozen to the spot, unable to help anyone or protect myself. This thing, this devil, seemed to have such insane power... the opening flurry of attacks from Canti, Sekai, Rayo, and the others seemed to do barely anything to him. And to top it all off, he had to make everything worse just afterwards. Zan, Sekai, Phoenix, Rayo, Senna, and Zavier... gone. Gone! How were we supposed to defeat this monstrosity with less than half of our firepower remaining?

This means... this means I have an even bigger part to play now.

So I'd better get to it.

The fear in me began to evaporate, and my eyes went from a widened stare to a look of determination, one I hadn't had on my face since... well, since any time I could remember, though that wasn't much at this point. I began to move forward, only to stop short as a look of fury crossed the Devil's face. Fury, mixed with... pain? But nobody in the room had caused him any sort of real damage yet....

”You use the power of the Fae against me! There was a reason I sealed them away!” he yelled, and then seemed to unleash a powerful trio of logs towards... well, towards nobody. ”This should teach you to use the powers of the Fae!” The Devil seemed unfocused, as if something besides the opponents he was fighting was commanding his attention... Wait, power of the Fae? Does he mean the artifacts we received? But none of us have used them... so could he be fighting the others too? Did he... did he alter reality somehow? Since it's a game, and he appears to be a creation of hackers, it should certainly be within his power.... I quickly pulled out my Topaz Armband and activated it, but nothing seemed to happen at first. I looked at the item again and realized its description had changed... and a plan started to form in my head. I looked around the room, trying to remember which of us had the Fae's artifacts besides myself. Silk and... Lighteria?
Flashmail!

From: Zhao Xun
To: Lighteria, Silk

You two have Fae artifacts right? It seems that somehow, the others managed to hit him with one, though I still can't quite put together what's going on. I'll let you all know if I manage to figure it out. Regardless, my Fae artifact says it erects a shield that will defend for one attack and then dissipate. So, how about one of you come over my way and fire off a shot from your artifact? If it's damaging in any way, he's sure to retaliate, but I can shield us against it. If it works, we can keep doing that a few times. Sound like a plan?

End Flashmail!
With that, I took a defensive posture, though the Devil seemed to be ignoring me for the time being. My eyes darted around the room, looking for some sort of change, something that might give away what happened to the others, and I waited for a response from Lights or Silk.
