(The thing is, he didn't actually have to do much, not in this case. Just to get warmed up, Canti had settled into the fight and done a decent part so that he could get his sea-legs around here, so to speak, as with everyone else. It bothered him that the heat was still hurting him, that his endurance didn't cancel out the damage effect in totality, but it wasn't worth complaining about. He had the items, he had the fortitude. That was all that mattered. Canti wasn't one of the New Guys anymore. He, Zhao, and Dien were just One Of Them now, as important to the team as Zan or Hijinx. There were new New Guys, and they seemed to be doing just fine, especially since at least a couple of them were 'Old Guys'. Either way, the job get done fast and Canti only noticed after he'd done HIS bit that Sheena was gone like the wind.)

Canti: Man, she has a one-track mind.

(So, after the quick heal from Nighthand, Canti did what any person on the move would do. He went off like a bat out of hell. Catching up with Nighthand wasn't too hard. If his flight couldn't match the leader's while Ap Do'd, then nothing could. In doing so, he would be among the first to see their new surroundings...not all of which were pleasant at all. He didn't mind the oversized lava-house. No no... Lava-houses were cool. *Rimshot* It was like a mound of lava kept in a particular shape with only a door as a reminder that it was anything but a dungeon entrance. The door looked to be some sort of fiery puzzle-lock, or something like it. Okay, that would've been a breeze...except that it wasn't what it seemed at all. First off...they had company. The ugly kind of company. Yea, though I hover through the valley of fire and death, I shall find me some evil. A small army of it, in fact. A ton of small fries, a gaggle of mid-guys, a group of big guys, and a badass with a crown of fire to top it all off. Welcome to Moloch's expressway... Fire Elementals out the wazoo, adding up to a whopping 54, and the Kind may as well have counted as FIVE IN ONE. Nothing says "It's a Balrog!" like a Level-80 fire creature. Truly...this was the test of the dark and fiery Twin Blade.)

Canti: Right. Let's do this. Leroy Jenkins!

(Actually, he wasn't the type to just Leroy it, per se. Canti's instincts never failed him, and besides...Sheena did it first. AFTER Nighthand impressively-struck the war party with an ice spell, Sheena shot straight through the masses with an intent to kill the King Elemental. Wait, no... She wasn't... Just how strong WAS she? Well, apparently she was very strong, and driven. The King died in a blast of heat that shook the area like a natural disaster. And not only that, but she started attacking the door. Wait... The door was...targetable. Something was going on here... And then, it happened. A Rip Maen spell descended and brough back the main event, the King Elemental, as if it had never been touched. Oh fucking hell... The door was a boss character. Sheena stepped back to regroup. Okay...now they were gonna do this...and Canti had a plan. Taking a Health Drink first, he began by attacking the outer-fringes at the start, fly-by-slashing a group of Mini-Elementals. There was a ludicrous overabundance of them, so he figured that it was best to do this first. As he flew, a number of the elementals taking notice of him - some of them not the Minis - took a moment to cast a number of Vak spells at him. No, he didn't see what they were. His HUD merely indicated fire damage, which hurt to a degree...but not in a debilitating way. This was his strength. This was what he could do for the team. He could afford to look into such crazy matters. Canti's tactic had managed to lure off eight Minis and one Normal. The rest that had fired on him were paying closer attention to the others at the moment.)

Canti: Okay... Phase One complete.

(They were there, they were mad, and they were forming knives and bludgeons out of their bodies. Flying, Canti did as he could. He wasn't toying around anymore. He was putting his back into it, damaging Minis here and there, spreading damage as much as possible. He was not escaping injury himself. It was just that with eight lower-level guys and one higher, it wasn't gonna be easy to take down this Twin Blade. Stabbing the head of the Normal Elemental and then backflipping to clobber one of the Minis, one of them soon died. And that's when the door reacted. He was waiting for this. It was gonna revive one, wasn't it? The fire-spheres glowed and...)

*BOOM!!!*

Canti: GAH!! What the hell?! It attacks too?!

(THAT wasn't part of his plan. But after taking another Health Drink for the damage, he decided to implement Phase Two. This was based upon the fact that normally...Rip Maen spells never revived more than one at a time, and he had eight weakened Minis and one damaged Normal. Canti got out of arm's reach and pointed his arm down. Black fire coursed from his hand and descended upon the group of nine. Damaging them as he had, he reserved this to finish them off their last HP. Eight Level-20 creatures bit the dust almost at once, leaving an injured Normal Elemental. Canti grinned wickedly at this. They could win, easily. Their ability to kill these bastards was greater than their ability to survive. Great day for that. The Twin Blade left the injured Normal, mostly because he'd had a thought. Sheena had gone for the door, and the door reacted, like it was alive. It seemed like a target. If something could take out its ability to cast spells, maybe the kills would become that much easier. He decided to test this plan, to see if the door reacted specifically to attacks against it. It had already decided to blast him, after all. Canti swooped past Elementals and came to stand before the door. This was gonna drain his SP entirely. Good thing he'd stocked up before he left...)

Canti: Burn...

(Holding both hands out, the Twin Blade felt a dark shadow come over him as the Darkness Flame swirled and projected forward in a huge stream of Ani-power. It was like an eruption itself, blasting out against the stone and the gems with a run-off that would probably do harm to anything too close...save for Canti himself. He appeared to be fixated on the door, seeing if there was any damage, any budge, any give at all.)

OOC: Combat Report!

1x King Elemental
8x Giant Elementals (2 Injured)
15x Normal Elementals (4 Injured)
30x Mini Elementals (1 Injured, 8 Dead)
1x Door (???)

Coin came up Heads. Hence the boom.
I'll have a doozy of a sig later, I swear. It'll reflect ".hack//CODE" an' everything.

Hey look! A profile! It's got items and stats and things! Cool! If it isn't fully up to date, it will be, so don't worry 'bout it.

So the gemstones were the horde’s white mage platoon. After Sheena had obliterated the King and made a few knocks on the door, they’d activated to largely undo all the damage that she’d done. How the embodiments of fire had Rip Maen at their disposal was beyond him, but it was clear that they did. That would be annoying, as it meant that any damage they did would be hastily undone. Against a horde such as this, it could effectively double or triple their numbers. Granted, after Rip Maen, they would be devoid of SP and so wouldn’t be able to throw their Vak spells around, but it was clear that the best way of doing things was to destroy the casters. The gemstones had to go.

At the moment, there was no way to know whether or not they could be destroyed, or if so, how it could be done. It was time to play the role of the scientist, then; systematically trying methods for the destruction of these foes among foes until something produced a result. Looking around the canyon, he could count twelve total crystals: six smaller than the rest, and two that stood out as distinctly larger. Since in the World as controlled by Elites size does matter, Dien decided to play it safe and use one of the littler gems to play with.

Still, there was the matter of getting there before he could do his peculiar brand of science. Before the fact, there was no shortage of monsters – easily numbering in the fifties or sixties, and unlike the monsters that had invaded Mac Anu with the Elites, these actually took effort to kill. For the first time, Dien faced the fear that a coordinated attack by these guard dogs could destroy all of the Freedom Fighters before they could so much as flinch—it was frightening. Between rescuing Nall and retreating to the hideout, he began seeing the benefit of the latter. But…Nall was still a prisoner. He’d faced hell and high water to save them from the clutches of Suraisu, wasn’t it time they did the same?

So then, gemstones; rather, opening a path to get to gemstones. Simply running through wouldn’t work; even with an Ap Do spurring him on, he’d have to be remarkably careful getting through. Of course, the effect in Vulcan’s Revenge was brought to mind, wherein all of the fire monsters actually welcomed him with open arms and even helped him towards his target, but he doubted that these would hold him in such high regard as that. No, he would have to rely on stealth and diversionary tactics to get through, and as much as he could work to avoid being noticed in a crowd of people, he doubted the digital and unprejudiced eyes could be so easily fooled.

It was a matter of speed and skill; speed to get as far as possible as fast as possible, and skill to avoid being caught in the process. Thirty yards still remained. Hell, he could handle that. A few burns on the side wouldn’t be all that detrimental, either. Having cast all the Aps on himself that he would require, he set off, making it through ten of the aforementioned thirty yards before a monster noticed, and another five before another tried to stop him. Pulling an old trick out of his hat, he straight up threw Lake & Sea into the thing’s head, pulling out Glitter as it stumbled backward and unleashing a Rue Crack to destroy it (1). This had the unfortunate side effect of attracting the attentions of the two or three other monsters nearby, including one of the normal ones. Cursing silently, his free hand pulled Lake & Sea out of the earth, which caused Glitter to disappear to the magic of game mechanics.

Moving on, he now had a crowd following him, but unlike Canti, his was unwanted. Only ten yards remained, and he leapt skyward, pulling out an Ice Strike scroll from his inventory and activating it into the heart of the monsters. Five of the weaker Elementals were caught in the blast (5), along with two of the level 40’s and one of the level 60’s. While the minis were killed, the other three were left perfectly alive, which was waaaaaaay too much attention for what he wanted. Now half of the crowd’s focus was on him, and he doubted they’d let him get away with tampering with the gemstones in the canyon wall. Nonetheless, his spin-jump brought him the rest of the way ‘round, and he landed, continuing his run and avoiding the few spells that were fired off at him. Had they hit, even with the mysterious Corona protecting him, he would have been fried like cheap fish, but by some measure of luck, they hadn’t hit.

He didn’t have time to worry about whether or not they were following, and so made a break for the nearest crystal. Downing a Health Drink to replenish the remaining bits of his HP that had been burned away in the ever-harshening atmosphere, he leapt in the air at his first target, activating his weapon and throwing a Rue Slash in its face. Two hits connected, and for a moment, nothing happened. The gemstone had lost most of its luster, but that didn’t prevent it from going out with a bang. All at once, a massive conglomeration of heat and Vak energy surged above his head, and before he could even think or move, it came crashing down, leaving him with slivers of HP that were fading quickly. Swearing quietly, he used a Healing Potion to restore the damage, and surveyed the result of his efforts.

The gem was still duller than its friends, though it wasn’t down for the count yet. Well, unless that was some kind of final counterattack. Still, he wanted it to shatter before he’d let it be called dead. Against something so Vak-ish, the only logical conclusion to attack with was a Rue spell. Trying to see if he could break it, he pulled out one of his latest acquisitions to his inventory and decided to let it go free. Absolute Zero: it was the scroll that Nighthand had so masterfully manipulated when they’d first seen the valley and its occupants, and yet even without a mind as creative as his behind it to twist it into something as spectacular as he’d witnessed, the thing still packed a wallop. Three elementals were almost upon him, and without having planned it, activating the scroll destroyed them utterly (1, 2), along with another mid-level Elemental (1) and four more minis (4). Granted, he himself was also damaged by the attack, and he looked to the crystal as the residual energies cleared out, only to find it just as intact as it had been before. It hadn’t broken!

Letting out a cry, he landed a blow on the thing so incredibly massive and impelling that under normal circumstances, either the rock would have shattered, sword would have shattered, or bone would have shattered. But, seeing as how this was The World, none of the above happened. His hit registered as a hit, but beyond that nothing happened. This thing was starting to piss him off, despite its lack of doing anything. Maybe it needed a different skill to shatter? That could be satisfied. Lake & Sea in hand, he leapt into the air and activated the Rue Revolver skill, unaware that he was also catching the chest of another Giant elemental behind him. No effect was rendered on the gemstone, and he had half a mind to enter into debate with the thing to explain why it should be in pieces on the ground already. It wouldn’t have responded, though. The Gem couldn’t speak, and probably couldn’t hear. It was probably even little more than fire energy encased in crystal, and so human speech would have no effect on it.

Without warning a RaVak Don slammed down upon him from behind, the result of his Rue Revolver’s collateral damage. Something about his demeanor changed. No longer was he interested in examining methods to break a shiny rock, he was interested in teaching it a lesson for defiling him and his authority. He was an Emissary of Vulcan! If it couldn’t speak English, he would speak to it in a language it would be sure to understand. Without realizing it, his body erupted into flames, and the World took on a slightly more aggressive view. Before his eyes, the object of his wrath sat on its wall, and he unleashed everything he had upon it. One punch after another connected, each one sapping a huge chunk of his strength and energy until finally he was drained: all of his energies wasted on the thing, which continued to defy him on its wall.

What was that?

His body finally gave in to the fires that had been consuming it, bringing him first to his knees and then to lie on the earth below. Frustration wracked him, though as he finally disintegrated, he felt it leave like a weight off his shoulders, leaving an almost panicked confusion in its wake. He’d been on fire? How was that even possible? It was completely different than when he’d fought against Leek. Then, he’d been in complete control of himself, barely touched on the inside by the man’s words and actions as they fought. Analyzing his moves had taken no effort, and he hadn’t cared about any of the Emissary of Vulcan crap that had been running through his mind. So that left him with the question: what the hell was that?

My mantle…

It was what he’d sought in the dungeon: something called Vulcan’s Mantle. It was what Amy had fought to get him: a power that would save him. But what was it? He was to become a Vulcan Summon when called upon and fight for those who’d called him. Why had he just changed, then? Why was death so cold?

Did I succeed?

Remembering his mission, he glanced up from his spot on the ground, his ghost body now separated from the cinders that remained. There, still intact on the wall, was the gemstone, with the same lack of luster that he’d created with the first blow. More likely than not, that was the extent of the damage they could inflict on each of the gemstones, and as he walked painlessly through the crowd of monsters, he began composing a flashmail to his comrades.

So I’m not sure who just saw that, but I decided to conduct a series of experiments on the gemstones after seeing that they were the only effective white mages for the horde of monsters we’re up against. Here’s what I’ve found.

There are twelve total gemstones: two big ones, four mid-size ones, and six little ones. When I attacked, I targeted one of the small ones with a Rue Skill. It went dull, but immediately cast a PhaVak Don on me, the one who’d attacked it. After reviving myself, I tried to get the thing to either shatter or produce further results, but despite numerous attempts, its state did not change. It doesn’t shine as much, but I can’t tell if this visual has any bearing on whether or not it can still function.

I can’t say how much force will be needed for each of the gems to get the same effect, but the Rue Skill seems to have done the trick for the little ones. I also can’t say if spells will work or not, so if you’re feeling scientific, go ahead and give it a shot.

Oh, and can someone revive me? Thanks.
And with that, the thing was sent off, eliciting a faster response than he’d anticipated as his body was remade.

Hey, welcome back. What was that?” It was Senna, the longarm who’d only just joined when he split off. After showing his gratitude with a nod, he followed her gesture to his prior battle ground.

“You mean the whole deal with the gemstone?” He didn’t know if she meant that or his berserker. Apparently, though, it was worth a grin.

Pretty much. Earned some fireworks. Learn anything?” Straightforward, but at least he wouldn’t have to beat around the bush. No saying if she’d read the flashmail or not yet…

“Nothing much,” he said, “thought I could break it, but it turns out these guys are a bit more clever than Suraisu had been.” He paused, switching equipment for a moment to be able to Ap Do, Ap Vakz, and Rig Geam himself once again, before continuing. “Rue skills will take the lustre out of them, but I can’t speak a word for whether or not that stops their casting abilities…”

For a moment, she gazed toward the gate again. “It’s a place to start. Unless we want to keep fighting until the Elites round us up. Any thoughts on speeding this up?

“Kill the support,” he said, “while those crystals are intact, there is no way for us to effectively eliminate the enemy forces.” He stopped to think a moment. This was going to be tough. With so many monsters running around, it would be next to impossible to get by unscathed. “We need a distraction,” he began again, “to keep the bigger guns of this armada we’re against occupied. The small fries should die easily, so if we take them out with one and two hit kills, we should be able to get to the crystals before our work is undone for us.” There was also the matter of whether or not the crystal he’d hit was disabled, but he guessed it was, and at this point, there really was no telling either way. “Two or three people should be sufficient to keep them dull while the rest of us focus on killing the enemies, though with that King running around, it won’t go easily. We just have to keep him busy so our gem killers don’t get taken out while they cut off the roots.”

She nodded. “Two with water spells, someone with La Repth? I’d suggest people with a higher vak skill - Maybe Phoenix, or Silk?” She cut herself off there. “Sorry.

Dien could only smile. “While I am called an Emissary of Vulcan, I don’t know if that means I’ve got mad skills with Vak,” he replied, “but do you know how everyone here fights? That would be immensely helpful in strategizing…”

She ducked her head. “I didn’t know. Sorry. And… some? Let me know what you want to know and I’ll try?

“No worries,” he said, smiling, “I just want to know abilities beyond what I can see in class and similar distinctions. After another moment, “I mean infection-type stuff.”

She hesitated again. “I’m not…well. Hac has the water affinity. And there’s, I think summons. Canti, it seems to be an affinity for darkness.” She shot a rapid glance in the direction of said Twin blade before continuing with what she could remember. “I dunno about infection, but Silk’s creative, quick thinking, resourceful. The other one… he was moving incredibly fast there but I don’t know anything else.” Now it seemed she was settling into ticking everyone off as she went through. “Phoenix has the wind blade. Nighthand and his stats. I haven’t seen Zhao do anything unusual, but I wasn’t around for some.. and there’s the new guy.” She looked around again, to see if maybe she missed anyone

“That helps,” he said, smiling lightly before letting his mind explore the possibilities, and he realized that he’d almost completely forgotten the longarm before him, “hey, what about you?”

That earned a shrug. “Nothing to report here. So, how can I help you out?

He smiled again. It was so good to have people who were willing to go along with his crazy plans again, “well, first we need to decide who should attack and hold the gems. It should be primarily lighter classes and weaker fighters, as they’ll be largely playing the part of the white mage while we fight, resurrecting folks as they fall and healing us without attracting attention to themselves. We also need as much muscle and skill as possible to take out the elementals before they can be resurrected. Any ideas for the best candidates?”

If you’re looking for lighter, lower classes, Maybe Silk, Zhao… huh, the new guy? I don’t know what level he is, but he seems fairly team-oriented.

“Yeah, dunno about Silk, but Zhao and the new guy for sure. I’ll tag along with ‘em as well so I can watch the fight from outside and play the part of the general.” There was a moment where he simply looked at the battlefield and the yet untouched hordes of monsters, and then it hit him; twinblades didn’t have any Rue skills. Zhao would have to come with them, but his usefulness beyond defending them and playing as their white mage would probably be lost. “Rally the troops, if you will,” he said, cracking his neck from side to side and drawing his sword, “and see if you can’t give my team a clear path. Once we’re through, start cutting away at the smaller ones, but have the strongest players keep the King occupied. That way, we all survive. I’m counting on you, Senna.”

She offered a small salute with the point of her spear. “I’ll do my best.

Re: Gated Folding Stare; Fighting Through Fire!

As the last of the elementals went down, Raven let out a sigh of relief. It wasn't like the monsters here were in a comfortable range of level for him to fight. The lowest leveled ones, and therefore the most common, or so he hoped, were around his level. However, there were also a good number of ones that were a lot higher in level than that, and it was probably only going to get worse from there.

What am I doing here if I'm just going to get my ass kicked around by high level monsters? Oh well, I guess I can try and stick to the mini-Elementals as much as possible and lower the numbers for the high level guys. God I hope we have someone who can deal with the level 80 ones that Marionette mentioned... Raven thought to himself.

It seemed like the group wasn't going to wait around to strategize after the fight, as they seemed to immediately rush onwards. Well, technically it seemed like one person wasn't going to wait around, and the rest of the group was trying to keep up with her so that she wouldn't get herself killed. Then again, Raven had no idea who she even was, so he didn't know what her level was. From the way everyone seemed to be racing after her, he assumed she wasn't that high up there. They all raced after her, across the burning field. In their midst, Raven spotted both Raquar and Hacorie, the only two faces he recognized from before he went comatose. Once again, Sekai seemed to be a no show, but at least he wasn't alone in the group at present. He didn't know why Raquar had been absent when they all went to see Marionette, but he probably had a reason, and he was here now when it counted. Its not like there was much time to say hello though, as they were running after the woman who didn't seem to want to wait. He did give Raquar a quick wave as they ran, to say a bit of a hello. Raven downed a Health Drink quickly to keep his health up as the heat kept bringing it down. The Ap Vakz cast on him earlier seemed to be lowering the damage, and therefore, all the fire element boosts his armour gave was probably helping a bit as well.

As they ran, they finally came to what appeared to be a canyon, with a large door at the side opposite them. That was most likely where they were headed, but it didn't seem like it would be an easy task. Standing between them and the door was a large number of Elementals of all shapes and sizes. The one that especially stood out in Raven's eyes was the single Elemental that was taller than all the others, and had a crown of fire around its head.

Okay, that's quite obviously the level 80 Elemental that was mentioned. Now I just pray to god that someone, or multiple someones preferably have the level required to take that thing out... Raven thought hopefully.

He wondered what the rest of the group would do next. Would they just rush in and attack? Would they use more of those odd skills he watched them do earlier?

”ABSOLUTE ZERO!” yelled Nighthand suddenly.

Raven wasn't immediately sure what he was looking at, but it seemed like the leader of the group had just summoned a massive tornado of ice. Then there was the fact that Raven didn't recognize the skill name either. Was it just a high level skill, or something else? He assumed that this Nighthand guy was probably at a generally high level, so it wouldn't surprise him in the least if that was it. However, he had seen both Sidhe and Nemera use some pretty insane skills before that definately weren't part of the game. So was it the same sort of idea? Like the insane speed boost one of them seemed to have? Whatever the case, it seemed to sweep up quite a few of the Elementals in its high winds and did a lot of damage. Much to Raven's dismay, however, the woman they had been following after took that as an opportunity to rush through the Elementals and straight at the large level 80 one.

Oh, this isn't going to end well... Raven thought to himself as he cringed while watching her jump up.

His face went pure white as he watched what she did though. He stood in amazement as she punched through the Elemental's body in one hit and came out the other side without losing any momentum. The Elemental seemed to collapse upon itself with the large hole in it, and died as the woman went to the door and began to bash on it with her fists.

"Oh my god...how high level is she...?" Raven muttered to himself.

Despite the woman's banging however, it only seemed to set off something in the door, as a ray of light ressurected the level 80 monstrousity. Everyone else seemed to take that as a sign that it was time to start fighting their way through to the other side, and Raven followed along. He may not have had any fancy skills like the rest of them, but he could still do some damage and buy the others time to do whatever it was that they do. That in itself may be a problem though, as the monsters all seemed to either be too high level, or overly massive in numbers. Raven tried not to think about it though, as he checked his SP to see if it had recovered sufficiently. Noting that it had more or less replenished itself, he rushed into the fight with little hesitation. He was going to have to stick to the smaller ones once again, but he could handle that for the most part. As the others started to fight, Raven joined them and watched a few other guys manage to grab the attention of the higher levels, and smiled since it made his job easier. Raven rushed right in and landed a few slashes on the body of a nearby mini-Elemental, and kept moving, not wanting to be in the way of any counterattack. He moved behind it and cut at it once again. He watched it form a sword made of fire, and clashed blades with it a few times before being pushed back. He waited for it to come at him, and then ducked under its flaming blade, and swung his own, glowing blue.

"Rue Slash!" he yelled, dragging the sword from the point of impact at its side all the way across to the opposite side.

The attack sliced right through the monster, cutting it in half, and freezing the point where it had been cut for a brief moment. The legs fizzled out and died, but it didn't seem to matter as the monster began to grow a new set. Raven didn't give it the chance though, and kicked it square in the head, turning to see another mini coming after him from behind as he swung around with the follow-through. He dove forward and landed on his hands, going under the monster's swing, and propelling himself towards it again with a new plan. His foot was glowing blue now, something he had never thought to try before.

"Rue Kruz!" he yelled as a blanket of icicles appeared between him and the monster.

As he hit the thing with his feet, he forced several of the icicles deep into the creature's body with his feet, and used them as leverage to kick off into the air and land a short distance away. The one he had cut in half before was now fully recovered and began to run towards him in anger. Raven ducked under the swing of its sword, but still felt the heat from it burn away some HP. He stabbed the creature with his sword a few times, and kept ducking away from attacks from both the ones attacking him. The rest of the group seemed to be doing quite well in taking out the monsters, but Raven was still busy trying to keep up. He finally cut through the first elemental, and it seemed to be doused and vanish. That took care of one Elemental, now to just deal with the second one. It took a swing at him and he sliced off its arm before it could hit. Raven backed away, and the monster paused for a moment as its limb recovered. Noting the amount of time it took for the beats to do this, Raven came up with a plan and waited for it to attack again. As it rushed him one more time, Raven sliced off both its arms in quick succession and then stabbed his blade right through the creature's stomach.

"Rue Slash!" he called.

He dragged the blade up through the monster's gut, chest, and then its head before the glowing blue blade came out of its body. The monster froze over for a moment, and Raven used that chance to slash through it horizontally and shatter it into pieces. With that second Elemental gone, Raven stood up to look for his next target. Before he could, a little ping went off inside his head, and he opened the flashmail quickly.

Thanks.
Raven couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief. It seemed that this team wasn't without its strategic minds. That certainly wasn't what he was good at, so it was nice to know that someone could do it. He might consider doing that too, but he could be more help killing the larger number of minis at present. He glanced over at the door where these gems were, just to get a general idea, and watched another ray of light shine in and suddenly revive one of the Giant Elementals. Raven stayed the hell away from that spot, knowing that that thing could kill him in one attack if it wanted to. He'd stick to the Minis, thank you very much. He considered the fighting patterns and abilities of the minis from his current experience, thinking about it rationally. There had to be a good way to kill a lot of them really quickly, and effectively to boot. All he knew is that they took extra damage from Rue spells, but not an Elemental Critical perse. They could form weapons out of fire, and they stalled a bit when you cut their limbs off so that they could grow back. That last one only lasted for a second or so, but the delay was there and Raven would take any moment of weakness he could from these things. He thought about it for a second, and then it came to him. He gave a bit of a smile as he started to look for his targets and prepared his attack. He quickly spotted the Elementals that he wanted, and pulled a Speed Charm from his inventory. He didn't want to use one of these since he had been having issues walking before, but this was too good an option to pass up.

Raven took note of the positions of five Elementals in general close proximity to each other, and he slashed at one of them quickly, and then made sure it followed him in. Then he ran up to another and did the same. He repeated this for all five, drawing them close to one another, and just before the fifth, he activated his Speed Charm. He moved much faster, knocking the monser back a bit towards the others. Then he threw his sword, watching it stick right through one of the Elemental's heads. He then drew another sword, his Menhir Sword, his blade with the highest physical attack stat. He circled the creatures quickly, slashing away at them and forcing them inwards towards each other. They tried launching spells at him as he moved, but he passed so close, and so quickly, that they either missed completely, or were interupted as he slashed. He cut off limbs, slashed them open, just trying to cause as much damage as possible as he moved. Then, when all the Elementals were basically back to back, Raven leaped into the air, sheathed his blade, and landed, almost doing a handstand on the handle of his Lake & Sea stuck in one creature's head.

"Rue Revolver." he called.

The Elemental the sword was stuck in began to dim a bit, and then exploded into shards of ice and sparks as the explosive spell went off inside its body. The explosion rocked the other four Elementals too, adding good amount more damage to what they had already taken. A few of them died with the explosion, but two of them remained in critical condition and trying to recover several holes in their bodies. Raven didn't waste time, landing on the ground and using his speed to slice through them quickly, adding to the momentum of the cuts as he did. The monster got ripped open once again before they could heal, and Raven kept going until they both collapsed to the ground and faded out completely.

Okay, now that that's done with, maybe I should try my hand against those gems that Dien mentioned in that message. Let's see if that is the trick to finishing this fight... Raven thought, taking off through the quickly thinning crowd of Elementals with the last of his speed boost to join Dien and whever else was working on the gems.

Re: Gated Folding Stare; Fighting Through Fire!

At this point Senna was just trying to keep up. This could be taken in a number of ways, but the most obvious one was literally, as she was trying to do two things at once and as a consequence was lagging at the back – and very nearly off the back – of the group. There was something about her inventory that was troubling her, something missing, but trying to run and keep track of the lava so she didn’t step in it AND sort through her (probably too) large list of equipment to look for whatever was throwing off her sense. Ah well, if it didn’t jump out at her it couldn’t be something she used often.

Sheena’s display was impressive, but the display of the fortification itself was a different kind of impressive. Whoever designed it was rather single-minded in their love of fire, but to their credit there was a LOT of it. Not just coming out of the creatures, but out of the gates that would, presumably, lead to more fire-laden obstacles.

Of course, the gate also had the power to regenerate fallen comrades. Not good.

Senna moved in on one of the lower-level creatures, trying to give her SP more of a chance to refresh. One thing she had accomplished during her equipment-scroll was to get out of her water-based stuff, for the moment, to make her less likely to keel over from one hit from any lame old level 1 fire spell. Moving in, she brought the butt-end of the spear around underhand and smacked it into the things… chin, or whatever passed for a chin with it. Dropping to one knee to fall under its return swing, the other end up the spear came up to carve a glowing line across the center of its chest.

Extending the move, she did a quick exchange-spin (wow, who knew that year of dance would actually come in handy?) to go under its arm-ish thing and deliver a swift blow to its side.

This time it reacted in a more battle-ready mode. A set of red-and-black spikes erupted from its side and back, nearly driving into her face and slicing into her arm. She gritted her teeth and moved through it. This was nothing. Pain beat nothing. Pain beat blankness.

Standing and spinning the spear again, she jabbed the point of her weapon backward under her arm. “Rue Rom.

It seemed enough, between the spell and the twist she gave the spear inside it. Jagged lava rocks pushed up through the ground beneath her feet, but the spell was halfhearted, its caster already dying. The drag on the point told her it was going down. But the tour around the creature gave her a clear view, more o less, of Dien’s efforts against the gate and the subsequent end of that series. She worked her way closer, dodging between two of the level 40s to get close enough to activate the resurrect she’d pulled out. Her Flashmail indicator dinged, but there wasn’t time to check it now. Not with this as tight as it was being.

Dien had seen the gate up close – aside from Sheena he was the only one she’d seen. While she hadn’t been able to really tell WHAT had been done up there, it had created a big enough backlash to really cause trouble. But, it might also mean he had the one thing she was really hoping someone would bust out with.

A plan.

And as it turned out, he did, more or less. It seemed that he’d attacked one of the gems and its light had gone out. While it didn’t seem to be affecting the ability of the gate overall to spell the crap out of people and wake up its fallen teammates, it was something different, and in her admittedly brief experience that often meant they were going in the right direction.

She also took a moment during the conversation to check who the Flashmail was from. Huh. Dien. She wondered how much of what they were talking about was in there. Her own fault for not checking it earlier, but she was TERRIBLE about reading those longer messages in battle.

One interesting thing was that Dien was apparently called an emissary of Vulcan. There were a number of implications following from that, the biggest and most obvious being how little she actually knew about the rest of this group. Though it seemed she wasn’t the only one – having been absent for the last field, Dien wanted to know what she could tell him about the others.

Her bank of knowledge wasn’t much better than his, it was only a little more recent. Still, she shared what she could, between the skills and traits she knew people possessed and those she’d witnessed but could not explain, such as Asgard’s.

She’d thought she might get away with not mentioning herself in the list, but Dien was pretty sharp. She should have known better. It was an obvious omission to someone seeking to figure out what tools he had available.

She wasn’t sure whether or not to class her response as a lie. There wasn’t anything to report, not really. These things hurled spells and spikes. The fact that she once managed to avoid a sword swipe by apparently just making it go through her without hitting anything, or the fact that she wound up somewhere else when she died and was waiting for a res… they weren’t really tools a general was going to have use for.

Luckily, if he thought anything of it he had the tact, or the priorities, not to say anything more. Instead it was a quick real-planning bout. She made her suggestions for a small strike force, he modified the suggestions into the team he actually wanted based on his own experiences, then he asked for her to clear them a way through as much as possible, presumably so they could focus their energy on taking down that gate.

And there it was. The situation in which she actually felt comfortable. Given a role, she never felt quite as inept. She would have thanked him, would it not have looked ridiculous. So all she said was, “I’ll do my best,” reinforcing it with a salute. Then she was on the move again, swapping out equipment, looking for the best place.

There. Between two larger sets of monsters was a relatively empty area – the numbers of the enemy had thinned out considerably in the first place, and there was almost nothing there. The new guy was already running in more or less that direction, so Senna focused on the area.

Rue Rom. Rue Rom.

The two spells materialized next to one another, their edges just touching, forming a corridor of blowing ice shards that harried any fire monsters out of their way. Then she was running again, trying to keep out of the…

Wait. While she wasn’t ungrateful, it was interesting that the level 80 creature wasn’t bombarding them with massive flame magic. Unless, of course, the monsters had the same issue when revived as PCs did? Unless they came back with no SP? A level 80 monster was a dangerous creature to deal with, but without the ability to cast its ground-breaking spells, it would be a lot easier to handle. Meaning the more of these things they brought down, the fewer spells they would have to deal with as a group until Dien’s people got the gate taken care of.

Bring down the unrevived ones first! Let’s keep ‘em busy,” she shouted to her teammates, though she assumed they’d have figured that out before she did. From her inventory she pulled out a scroll. Here’s hoping.

She cast the scroll, but the hoping didn’t help – The Lovers dissolved, and the spell settled around one of the level 60s, but it didn’t take hold.

Oh, come ON!” she shouted at it in frustration, stomping her foot like a child throwing a tantrum. That unfortunately didn’t make the spell have worked any better. If anything, it just brought the thing’s attention around to her. Great. Well, if she was gonna prove she could hold her own with the rest, no better time right?

Focusing on the approaching creature, she let loose another spell. Her SP wasn’t going to hold up much longer though, so it was followed by a health drink and a Mage Soul, as well as removing her Shiny Ice and swapping to Ichigou.

The GiRue Kruz she’d cast intruded on the level 60’s reality and caused it to stumble. She didn’t have the sort of speed she was used to with casts of Ap Do – a loss sorely felt at the moment – but she charged in as the creature fell to its knees for the moment and took a hard swipe at the thing’s head. The spear cut through easier than she’d expected (though the thing was apparently made of magma, which was a little more liquid than most of the rock she was used to attacking) and she dragged it down, ducking under the thing’s arm and invoking Repulse Cage.

The spear began its preprogrammed dance. One cut, two, then the third… and this one with a cheery “Critical hit!” marked above it in red letters.

It was interesting. Against a smaller enemy the critical hit would have been… well, critical. Against this one, it was just a bit more painful. Still, she’d take more damage anytime over less when she was the one dealing it.

It retaliated with a raise spell. She saw the run in time to get out of the center, but not nearly soon enough to clear the danger zone. When the spikes erupted, the spire that hit her knocked her tail-over-head until she fetched up against something solid.

A quick glance showed her aid was in truth her enemy. Just great. Again.

Rolling away she came up on the disturbed earth where the spell had previously broken through. Standing unsteadily, she made the best she could of the situation with a gravity-defying leap a la game physics and came down spear first, body tucked in and hands almost on the butt of the weapon. It buried itself about 9/10 into the thing’s body, sliding straight in through the top of its head.

But as her feet finally contacted the creature, two things happened simultaneously. First, the remaining handhold worth of her spear that was outside the creature suddenly burst into flames. And second, the thing’s shoulders and the back of its head threw up spikes, using her own gravity-aided momentum to impale her on them.

Simple. Idiot. She screamed, not even sure what had happened, where she hurt, how she hurt, only that she DID hurt, all over, and that the field was spinning like the world outside a carnival ride, and then it stopped and she was on her side, facing not toward the enemy but away, toward other battles, toward the gate.

Ow, ow ow ow ow, holy… gotta move, that thing’s gonna… ow.

She rolled toward those distant battles, the move reigniting every point of pain (or maybe making new ones? Who knew what she might have landed on?) and felt the ground shake around her. “Repth.” It helped. Not enough. Christ, what had she been thinking?

Something hit her from behind and sent her rolling again. She was starting to be more used to seeing this field spinning than still. This time instead of just going, she called another spear to her hands and stabbed it desperately at the ground, bringing her to a stop and hauling her around to face more or less in the right direction. Through swimmy eyes from heat and smoke and pain, she could see her opponent.

GiRue Kruz.

Again, it hit and again the thing stumbled. Senna got to her feet and stalked forward a couple steps. Come on, come on… Another Repth was cast, and then… there! Red lines on the ground. She sprang forward, dashing toward the thing, spear up. It sensed her coming, or maybe say with those pools of color that were its eyes, so familiar, so similar… no!

It formed a sword in one of its hands and drew back that limb, ready to cleave into her with the blade. She kept charging. Don’t you dare not take this hit, body. Don’t you dare…

She struck first, but the speed carried her in close, and it made its own cut hard into one side. For a moment, she wondered if she hadn’t somewhat left her side open just for that shot. But there was pain, blood, her HP was spiraling. She smiled, faintly. Tore the spear out, spun it in a half circle through the air to give it speed again and cut into its neck on the other side, opening a glowing fissure there.

Rue Rom.

Again, she spell was the final straw and the monster went down – only to immediately be surrounded by a white light. Senna drew back a few steps and cast another heal on herself. Resurrected? Right away? No! NO no no…

Biting back the urge to scream, she turned and scanned for creatures that might still have their casting abilities intact. It’d be hypocritical not to follow her own advice. And she didn’t need to look any more hypocritical than usual.

She hoped Dien’s group was having luck, that the others were doing better than she at distracting and destroying… that they’d get through it. All good hopes.

You got be kidding me. This place is really a maximum security prison.

That was Phoenix’s assessment of the volcano after seeing the 54 various sized elementals at the entrance. He has not seen this many monsters since the attack on Mac Anu but this time monsters will not keep coming en masse. Usually a smart group would have tried to sneak past this many elementals but due to Sheena’s blind desire to save Nall, she managed to destroy that option with one powerful knock. Phoenix could not decide if Sheena was this naturally powerful or her obsession to save Nall has given her an unnatural power boost.

Even though there were a set number of elementals, the gemstones on the door will keep on reviving them while attacking the Freedom Fighters. The blademaster noticed that the gemstones will revive the highest level elemental killed first. Even though the elementals will keep on reviving, they lose some of their effectiveness as they have no SP once revived. That was the reason why the level 80 elemental has not used any of its spells.

Phoenix even knew that the Freedom Fighters could not just blindly attack the horde. There was a plan somewhat in motion. This plan was to divide and conquer as one group will focus on diversions while the other group takes out the gemstones on the door. The blademaster immediately knew what he was going to do. By now, he has gotten use to the role of being the guy who jumped into the fray while giving the others a chance for success. He rarely planned on surviving while doing those actions but somehow he makes it out in the end. This has to be one of the stupider things that Phoenix has done but then again there was even stupider things he has done.

The blademaster heard Senna saying to take out the unrevived ones. She was trying very hard to be a distraction but something told Phoenix that she was not used to this type of action. He ran towards the Long Arm with just his speed alone but an injured level 40 elemental was in the way. Phoenix fired off a Wind Blade hortizonally at the elemental and sliced it in two. He managed to reach Senna and pulled out a Healing Potion.

“Senna, take this. Work on taking out the gemstones. You shouldn’t be doing stupid things like this. Stupid things like this usually go to me. I’m good at pissing off enemies and allies alike.”

Phoenix gave the potion to Senna before heading into the fray itself. The gemstones shined once again to bring back one the level 40 elementals and directly in front of Phoenix as he was heading towards the level 60 elementals. He just smirked as he cut the recent revived elemental many times before dying once again. Phoenix was not going to let up on his attack but he need to be careful on his SP as he does not want to waste his supplies so rapidly.

For now, the blademaster was going to focus on half of the level 60 elementals or more specifically the ones that were injured from before. First he needed to get their attention and knew the perfect way to do so. Phoenix fired off four Rue Kruzs at the eyes of the injured level 60 elementals and one of the uninjured and unrevived level 60 elementals. The four elementals had managed to find the one who injured their eyes with ice and began to cast OrVak Roms at Phoenix. The spells were placed in a way that he would be fully encased in one of the tornados. He could not easily avoid it by quickly left or right but there was one way to avoid most of the damage.

Phoenix used one of his Speed Charms to give him even more speed. He jumped up into the air and activated Rue Crack from the Oberon. The extra height from the Rue Crack was enough to escape from the OrVak Rom trap and even cut through one of the level 60 elementals. The attack injured one of the elementals even further but there was no time to rest. The elementals were ready to slice, dice, smash, and cut Phoenix for escaping their trap and even drawing blood.

The blademaster was really on his game as he used his speed to avoid the various attacks of the level 60 elementals. He began to slice at the elementals’ legs and kept moving in order to avoid being caught in a 4 on 1 onslaught. Finally, his efforts were getting paid off as he managed to bring down one of the level 60 elementals. At that moment, a Vak Zot from the gemstones appeared under Phoenix and stunned him. The damage was minor but it was enough for the remaining three elementals to begin a counterattack on Phoenix. One elemental punched him backwards while the other two cast MeVak Kruz at Phoenix.

The fire protection that Phoenix had was enough to barely keep him alive as the sparks impacted his scarred ridden body. He immediately pulled out a Healing Potion to restore half of his HP. I won’t go out this way. I’m not dead yet. You elementals are nothing compared to the firebird of resurrection.

Phoenix used an Ice Strike scroll at the three level 60 elementals to emulate a MeRue Rom spell. Only the one that was previously uninjured before Phoenix started his battle was still alive. The blademaster was determined to finish off this elemental. He jumped into the air but he realized that Rue Crack was going to be blocked as the elemental was preparing a punch at Phoenix. The blademaster quickly changed his attack from Rue Crack to the Wind Blade as it went by the elemental’s punch and hit the elemental’s face.

The elemental’s death was not quick enough as the punch managed to connect to Phoenix but only at half power. The blademaster violently impacted on the ground from the punch. He took out another Healing Potion and drank it. At that moment, one of the recently killed Level 60 elementals has revived and tries to punch the surprised blademaster. Phoenix barely managed to avoid the attack by rolling backwards and got up.

Phoenix did his job very well; a bit too well actually. He managed to divert some of the tougher enemies away from the other group but now all the level 60 elementals were directly focused on Phoenix. Suddenly, Phoenix’s legs gave out and forced him to be one knee. “Senna, if you can see this. This is why you shouldn’t do stupid things like this. Even bad guys want revenge on the fallen. They see me as a great threat now.”

Shit. Why now? It had to be from moving around too much. I need to rest but those elementals will prefer to see me dead before allowing me to rest before I kick their ass. Also I need to survive for Suzaku’s sake. I can’t allow her quest to become fruitless if I died before reuniting. Here we go.

With all the available energy that Phoenix had, he somehow managed to get up but now what. He was not sure how he was going to get out of this one but he must somehow. He gripped his sword tightly as pondered his action.

Following Sheena, who seemed to be moving as if the full fury of the Nine Hells was at her heels, we ran into our next challenge. And what a challenge it was... Marionette had warned us of the danger that lay hidden in this field, but I had never expected this huge of a fight. Fifty-four monsters? They REALLY don't want Nall out of this place. Which makes sense, considering his level of power, but... if they just wanted his power out of the way, they should have struck at us while he was gone. Which they didn't. So... could they possibly have another reason for holding him? Does he have something they want that we don't know about...?

I wiped such thoughts from my mind, since trying to ponder intrigue and deception was not really the best of ways to survive such a hostile environment. No, my brain should be focused on other matters, ones that would affect the outcome of this current battle. The immediate problem that came to my mind was the gigantic advantage the enemy had in numbers, but... a good portion of them could be wiped out easily by the more powerful members, and then the group could tackle the stronger ones together. So the biggest problem after that was exactly the one Dien was trying to tackle: the gemstones.

Well, the obvious answer is what he's working on: nullifying them. So how should we go about it? He seems quite content to dash off to do his own thing after relaying us what he considers the necessary information... so should I join him? Or hang back?

My planning was cut short by the attack of one of the mini-elementals that had managed to hone in on me as its target. A Vak Kruz slammed into me, taking my HP down lower than I'd expected; the heat was taking its toll again. I quickly took a pair of health drinks, one to deal with the heat and another to deal with the damage the thing had caused me. Hopping back a few feet, I began to think; the problem here was that even though this thing would be easy pickings for any of the more powerful group members, it was still a few levels above me. I had to fight smart, and I couldn't delay much longer – the thing was already seemingly upset with my dancing slightly outside of its reach, and looked ready to unleash another spell.

Acting more quickly than ever before, I let off a Rue Kruz, again thankful for the ice spells I had handy. The damage seemed to faze the beast for a second, giving me time to close in. Upon reaching the close range I needed for my attacks to be effective, I unleashed another skill. “Thunder Coil!” I cried, striking the elemental with all my might, which was admittedly not much. I sprung to the left after finishing only to be struck by another spell: fireballs fell on me from above, the result of a Vak Don spell let off by the elemental. I popped back another Health Drink before focusing myself again. This thing was going down, and I had just enough space between me and it to damage it got to me. I had enough SP for just one more spell, and the rest would have to be done physically. Sure hope this thing goes down before I do.... “Rue Kruz!” I yelled, charging my enemy in the wake of my spell. I struck once, twice, thrice, and with the third shot two wonderful words appeared over my foe: “Critical Hit!” The enemy in front of me finally fell.

My efforts were immediately rendered worthless, however, when a Rip Maen spell was let off from one of the crystals, reviving one of the level 60 elementals. Jeez, it took everything I had for me to deal with one of these weak guys... and the stronger ones are just coming right back? I'll be more useful helping Dien out... but I should find someone to go with. I saw the new guy, Raven, heading in the direction of the crystals, and decided to send him a flashmail.
Flashmail!

From: Zhao Xun
To: Raven
RE: Wait up

Hey, Raven, I'd like to join you in working on those crystals. Wait up for me and we can head out together. Safety in numbers, neh?

End Flashmail!
With that sent, I rushed towards him as quickly as I could, trying to catch up to him. Safety in numbers, yes... more MY safety, but safety nonetheless.

There's one nice thing about running with a powerful group of people like the freedom fighters. Even if you jump into the middle of a group like a complete idiot, there's still a good chance the others will either do the same thing or merely mop the floor with whatever you're too distracted to kill yourself. Fortunately Lighteria barely had time to look up from his reckless attack before the rest of the team had already caught up and wiped the elementals out. Sure, planning wasn't exactly their forte, but who wants to stop and talk about something when you've got people to save? Speaking of which, a little blistering heat and giant beads of sweat jetting off his brow, isn't going to shake the timid twin blade out of his painfully naive heroic mindset. Since his vision had been rather sorely focused on the fire elementals trying to bash his brains inside out, the end of the battle marks his first opportunity for him to look up with clear vision at the group and the field. I tell you this because it explains why the next sentence out of his mouth starts out like this:

"Are you alright Shee-"

He blinks his eyes a few times and darts his head around, just in time to catch a tiny person running nearly out of view at top speed.

"-na?"

Yes, a lot of things can ruin a person's mood... stubbing your toe, getting your day plans rained out, or even realizing that the only person you managed to drag yourself off the couch and out of a paralyzing depression for truly does not give a @($^ about your efforts. This is the point where the heat really starts to get to the twin blade. Without an adrenaline high, the annoying bang clinging to his forehead via sweat becomes much more noticeable. Consequentially, his victory pose is quickly replaced with a slouch and an irritated groan. The party doesn't wait around for his theatrics of course, Nighthand leads the game of 'catch up' as usual with the rest of the group quickly following. Ap Do still ticking on him, Lighteria easily keeps up despite his slouch and worsening mood.

Of course, when he gets to the actual dungeon he has every reason to wish he was back at the hideout moping on the couch. The dungeon door is blocked by a mass of fire elementals large enough to supply the Mac Anu barbeque needs for years to come. Oh if only we could harness the power of this evil fire for the forces of good! Could you imagine that, instead of making war, we could be making hot dogs?! Just goes to prove how much the senseless violence in The World is ruining the few things that are truly worth experiencing in this digital life.

…Where was I? Oh right, the imminent danger. Lighteria looks up from his apparently hunger-induced thought haze to see the party already taking off to fight the things and sending out helpful flashmails. Lighteria quickly picks up on the resurrection concept and decides that the orbs are definitely going to have to go. …Of course, with the elementals pretty much directly in the way, getting at them without getting turned into a pile of ash could prove problematic. …Oh well. Basic fighting tactics would normally dictate that, since the orbs revive the strongest creatures first, the team should wipe out the weakest enemies first so the amount of repeat fighting is minimized as a stronger monster that takes a long time to kill will not simply pop back to life and start the process over again. The best solution is to kill off the weaker ones in order to minimize the HP totals they’ll have to cut through and also take pressure off the shear number of monsters the team needs to worry about when damage is incoming.

Of course the team is just kinda killing whatever is convenient anyway, so screw it. With a quick charge, Lighteria rushes head first into the fray, targeting a mini elemental and planting a flying kick to its face. That, combined with a few double swipes with his blades finishes the heavily out-leveled beast in a hurry. As the corpse fades into the ground though, the twin blade gets a shoulder twitch which is usually the indication that he’s in a lot of danger. …Ah, those trusty nervous reactions. The twin blade looks through the crowd of flames and frenzied players to see the King Elemental. Though it’s certainly reeling from the recent head-smashing and subsequent resurrection, it’s still quite a significant threat to just leave standing in the midst of a fight unabated. Killing it is pointless, as the orbs will simply revive it faster than the team can efficiently take it down. Still, it needs to be kept busy, lest it walk all over a lower leveled player… like Lighteria for example.

Still, being outclassed never stopped Lighteria before. His mind races for a moment as he comes up with a plan. Of course, one of the normal elementals takes the opportunity of having a twin blade stand still with a distant look to give Lighteria a good whack to the cheek. The twin blade reels in shock and spins backward briefly before righting himself and lifting his blades to parry the next attack.

I really have to watch what I’m doing…

The twin blade is quick to retaliate, sending a blade towards the elemental’s head in a furious uppercut. The elemental is, however, higher level and manages to dodge the attack, countering with another blow to the head. The twin blade, however, is still agile enough to dodge the blow and execute a quick spin kick as he jumps to the side, landing a blow on the elemental’s back. Now normally, the twin blade would gladly get locked in a fighting match like this until one of them keels over. He’s taken down tougher opponents in the past, certainly. This time though, time is of the essence and he’s actually got a PLAN. Hate to waste a plan… Thus, as the elemental charges again aiming another blow to Lighteria’s relatively squishy skull, the twinblade makes another spin dodge to the monster’s right, landing a strong enough kick to the monster’s back to send it stumbling forward a few yards, thanks to the added charge momentum. With that little disengage, the twin blade turns tail and runs, pausing only long enough to pop the cork on a health drink and down the contents, tossing the empty bottle…

…Straight at the King Elemental’s head. Well… whatever the King had been focusing on BEFORE, it certainly wasn’t NOW. Especially since the twin blade is rushing at full speed towards it, tauntingly barking “Your mother was a Bic Lighter!”. Of course, this causes the King to start storming towards the twin blade, intent on one shotting the upstart. This is actually ok with Lighteria though. After all, during a battle any amount of distraction put on this guy can mean the difference between someone freely attacking the orbs or simply having another person NOT get attacked. With this in mind, Lighteria skids to a halt, letting the King Elemental storm towards him with fire literally burning in its eyes. In these fun situations, where a vastly stronger creature is storming towards you with every intent to bash your head in, time seems to slow down. …Or maybe it just SEEMS that way. In any case, with the normal elemental rushing up behind him as well, Lighteria tightens his fists and shuts his eyes. Getting into an emotional state is pretty easy when you’re about to be killed, which is very fortunate for the twin blade as the King Elemental rears back for a punch to his face.

*SMACK*

The normal elemental’s head flies a good twenty feet backwards as the King Elemental’s fist blasts through the empty space where Lighteria’s body was and right into the poor comrade’s face. The elemental’s body slumps lifelessly to the ground as the King Elemental halts his attack and looks around in confusion. Seems that there’s about 70 or so little blue, floating orbs scattering around the battlefield now in random directions…

Nighthand took a moment to watch the fray, plotting out the best places to let off scrolls, hoping to get the most bang for her buck, so to speak. The large burst of the level 3 scroll was more than he was generally used to using, but at the moment it seemed appropriate. He used up a pair of health drinks, restoring himself to full health with a little overkill. It was when he saw Lighteria burst into his orbs that he took the moment to attack.

He first drank down a Wizard’s Blood, something he knew would somehow placate Twilight in its surging effects around him, allowing him to better focus on the spells he wished to manipulate. Then he downed a Hermit’s Blood, which would have no immediate effect on his hack, but would make the resultant spell all the more powerful.

Then, he removed three scrolls from his cloak, each to be focused on a different point of the battlefield, each to have their own effect.

The first he focused on a small grouping of Normal strength elementals, that had one mini elemental clustered with it. A perfect target for his first scroll. His eyeless vision open, a bluish twinkle from deep inside his skull, he could see the buffing effects of everything on the field. He could see so much… (12)

”Ice Strike!”

His first attempt at his scroll went well, but not well enough. The power he withheld, the power he let build, slipped from his grasp too early. Despite that, the Ice Strike scroll was still buffed; not quite to the power of a level 3, but close. All of the normal elementals took heavy damage, while the mini was killed outright. Not lamenting his lack of control, he sent off the second scroll in almost the same place; enough to catch the same elementals, but including a different extra as well; one of the Giants.(20)

”Ice Strike!”

The second attempt… well, that was more like it. It was as though Twilight didn’t even notice his workings right under its nose. He clenched off the flow of energy and let it build, until the stream that formed a level 2 spell was even yet above the torrent that was a level 3. The raging river exploded into being with all the force of a level 3 and more, the tornado of ice and snow blasting wider than even his first attack. All the elementals in the immediate area were consumed, snuffed out by the rushing waves of water and ice.

And then it was time once more to take down the King. (19)

”PERMAFROST!”

The level 3 spell was ferocious already, but it alone, cast by a level 50, would in no way be able to kill a level 80 elemental, even of the opposite element. But with his success in his manipulation, the beast didn’t stand a chance. The converge spell usually formed massive boulders of ice that crashed down in a trio of waves, to smash the single target in the center. Unfortunately for the King, that was just the tip of the iceberg.

Literally.

A half-dozen of the massive boulders formed, but they continued to form, and form, and form, until they were easily triple the size of the original spell’s specifications. They smashed home, followed quickly by a second wave, and a third. The king couldn’t have possibly survived that. And… Nighthand watched, as the gems flared up in the distance, wondering where the spell was going to target. Only when he felt the heat around himself rise, did he realize it was targeting him.

He didn’t have time to switch his stats, didn’t have time to give control to Silverblade and have him cancel out the spell. All he could do was stand and take it, as a tornado of flames rose up around him. It seared his flesh, burning away his hit points until it had nothing left to burn. To reduce him to 0… the gemstones truly were powerful.

And during this… where was Sheena? Nighthand in his ghost form, oblivious to the battle around him, walked closer, looking. And then he found her, ghostly as he was; she had no doubt been mobbed by the elementals, but in the chaos and the heat had been missed. So the pair of them stood together, Nighthand unusually calm and Sheena unusually furious, just waiting for the resurrects that would return them to battle.

(His black fire attack had done nothing. Okay... So much for the direct assault. Believe it or else, Canti actually stood there, in mid-air, thinking about it while his SP started to regenerate. Tons of battle going on behind him and he's there trying to figure out the door. You could say he had some kind of low attention span for events around him, but that was assuming that he was a normal person...which he was not. You could see him scratching his head on this, because it really wasn't obvious. It was not until Dien cast something against it - an ice spell - that he noticed any given change. So, in effect, and according to Dien's Flash Mail, the door was only effected by the orbs, apparently, and that there was a price for every hit. One of the gems was less-glowy now. Excellent. That had to be it, then. And furthermore...it may require different-level spells for different gems. Canti was about to toss one of his spell scrolls, when suddenly...)

*BOOM!*

Canti: Agh! You bastard!

(...he was pelted by a BiVak Don spell cast by the door. Taking a Health Drink...*Glug*...he NOW tossed an Ice Storm at one of the smaller gems and watched the spell erupt with icy-cold against it. The gem faded, as it was the same thing that Dien had done before. And, of course, the same thing happened afterwards. Suddenly, and without warning, a cluster-explosion of fire knocked Canti out of the sky like a character from the old Super Smash Brothers games. He probably tripped a couple Elementals while skidding past, but here is the remarkable thing... He didn't die. Not yet. He'd had high fire-resistance aimed at this, so who better than him to set these things off? He was still low on HP, though, and required another Health Drink. Actually, he needed two. Recovering from disorientation, he noticed a few things. First, the Elementals were getting the snot beaten out of them, which was good. And second, there was an effect in place that lowered all Vak spells and raised all the Rue ones, which was better. However, there was one drawback. Nighthand, who had kicked some serious ass with some spell-scrolls, had been done in by a maximum-level fire spell, a Rom no less... Those were the deadliest. You had to be in awe of a force that could do that. It's sort of why Canti preferred these elements himself. Taking to the sky once more, the Twin Blade overlooked his surroundings.)

Canti: Let's see here... Not alot of the smaller guys left, and we've still got a number of big rigs to support Kingy over there... Yeah, let's do this.

(Swallowing a Mage's Soul, Canti put away his daggers and clenched his fists. Immediately, Darkness Flame covered his hands. He was ready. To begin with, he fired a number of bursts at the Mini-Elementals and the regular ones too. That is, he aimed to destroy the remainder, thin their numbers. It could not fail for them already being practically on the ropes. The Minis bursted apart after only a couple shots, and the regulars taken down soon after. Scratch four cannon fodders, anyway. But Canti wasn't done yet. Oh no... Not just yet.)

Canti: It's sooo easy when they don't see it coming. Heh heh heh heh heh...

(These monsters had been busy with the rest of the team. They hadn't had the chance to react to him yet, and he wasn't gonna give it to them. But, with dark fangs showing in his grin and an eerie overlap in his voice, it seemed as though Canti were starting to lose it. The dark Twin Blade fired a stream of dark fire from one Giant Elemental to the other, laughing all the way, right up until his SP ran out again. Still, though...that was quite alot of Darkness Flame. Hope nobody got in the way of that, 'cause that was a high amount of Ani-damage there. Hovering over the fiery scene, Canti laughed sadistically as he waited for his 'fuel' to return. He stopped, however, as the sound of a spell being cast was heard. Blinding light shown over the spot where the King Elemental had died lately. The Door had Rip Maen'd it. The Twin Blade facepalmed, then landed near the ghost of Nighthand's present.)

Canti: C'mon, Nights! Can't let death bog ya down. We've got work to do...

(And he said that in a way that implicated the use of unnecessary violence, to thoroughly trash the enemy and make them pay for every inch. Well, that wasn't exactly wrong, but it was creepy the way Canti said it. In any case, Nighthand was tossed a Resurrect from the Twin Blade's pocket. They had work to do, alright. The King Elemental was back, and it needed its dancing partner.)

Phoenix found himself to be the favorite target of fi… no six level 60 fire elementals. The elementals were under a pack mentality that if one of the kindred died, then the rest will take revenge on the one who kill their kind. The one who killed their kind was the blademaster himself. Even though he managed to kill four of them, Phoenix was not in the best of shape to take on six of them. Right now only two of them were at full magical power but the other four were not pushovers. Luckily for him, he was going to get some relief from the Bladesmage himself.

Nighthand managed to kill off two of the more recently revived level 60 elementals. He even kills off the Elemental King once again but without paying a steep price as the gems killed him off. It made the blademaster wonder why is the rest of the group taking so long with the gems. From the 54 elementals, it was now down to just fo… no five elementals with the King being revived once again. It should be easier to deal with the gems now with the grunts removed from the picture. Now even if Phoenix could remove the remaining five elementals from play, the gems will just bringing them back.

It was time to bring down the remaining level 60 elementals from the battlefield. Phoenix drank a Mage’s Soul to restore his SP back at full along with using a Speed Charm. Even though his legs gave out earlier, the blademaster was feeling better at the moment except for the four giant elementals that wanted to burn him to a crisp. Phoenix once again began the battle with a series of Rue Kruzs at their eyes. The attack was even more effective with Lighteria’s Rue orbs lingering all over the field.

At least the giants did not have full health to bring with as Phoenix continued to press on the attack. He leapt towards the one of the elementals that has not died yet and activated his Rue Crack skill. The icy skill sliced across of the giant elemental and made it give out a huge yell before burning out from the battle. At this point, the gems flare up and targeted Phoenix a stronger version of Vak Zot. Phoenix’s body was burned all over from the rising magma of the attack and made him lost sight of the giants for a second. When he could see clearly a second later, a RaVak Don smashed against Phoenix.

The blademaster was seriously in pain from the burns and being hit by a massive burning rock. He pulled out a Recovery Drink and drank it to recover from all the damage he has taken so far. Then he cast Ap Vakz to continue to delay the damage from the background heat and reduce the damage from the elementals’ attacks. That’s it. They are going to die now.

Phoenix sprinted towards one of the elementals and sliced at one of the knees. The elemental went down to one knee which the blademaster took advantage and use his speed to cut down its entire HP rather quickly. After the second giant fell, Phoenix went to attack a third elemental in a similar fashion but it was met with backup from the remaining elemental giant. An axe swing from the remaining giant stop Phoenix from slashing it. “RUE KRUZ!”

The Rue Kruz attack had icicles pierced the axe-wielding giant’s stomach. Due to Lighteria’s orbs, it critically injured the giant. Phoenix decided to put it out of its misery with a Wind Blade attack. The unique attack made the giant existed no more. And now there was only one giant left and that could change very quickly with the gems. At the moment, there was only one giant and the king remaining.

Phoenix saw another RaVak Don headed towards him but this time he was ready. He immediately switched out the Oberon for the Nataku. “RUE REVOLVER!” With a burst of speed, he avoided being caught in the blunt of the impact from the attack and went through the leg of the remaining giant. Ordinary, the attack at the leg of the giant would not kill it but with the rest of its injuries, it was a deadly poison as the ice spread throughout the body. Once the giant was a block of ice, Phoenix just touched it with his hand. The touch was just enough to shatter the elemental into many icicle shards.

Now there was only one elemental left and it was the big one, the elemental King itself. The blademaster looked over the battlefield and noticed that the progress on the gems was not going as fast as he hoped. “Hey guys, not to be rude or anything. But can you just perhaps work a bit faster on those gems? I don’t want to keep fighting these things forever. I will try to keep the King from attacking you guys as much as I can. Now HURRY!”

Phoenix fired off three Rue Kruzs at the elemental King to get its attention. The blademaster soon drank a Health Drink and a Mage’s Soul as the King faced towards the one who has injured him. That’s right, King. I may not be able to finish you off with one awesome attack like Sheena or Nighthand. But I will make you hurt before you could finish me off. Wait a second, I’m not going to die this time. With a smirk on his face, Phoenix was ready to take on the King of fire elementals.

Still running, I saw Raven slow down to wait for me. He must have gotten my flashmail… good for him, finding time to read it during this insanity. “Hey there,” he said as I caught up to him. "Thanks for waiting,” I replied. “After seeing what those things can do, it seems like taking them on in pairs will be the past plan, neh? If you can take them down and tank the spells, I can keep bringing you back."

Raven looked to me and then to the gems before replying. "Yeah, sounds like a plan,” he said. “Besides, seems like the Elementals are clearing out a bit, so we may not have to worry too much about them in the mean time."

"Yeah, we can thank our resident heavy artillery for that,” I said, looking at the damage Canti and Phoenix were inflicting on our enemies. “Have you got enough Mage's Souls on you? I've got 11 Resurrects, but they're a whole lot less useful if you don't have any SP afterwards. I'm tapped out myself from all that fighting."

"I got a few, but not many,” he began, “and I hope I don't have to use them all before we get inside...because lord knows I'll probably be needing them. Anyways, yeah, I'm Raven, and you're probably the first member of this group aside from Raine to say a word to me. Nice to meet you."

"Yeah, I'm Zhao Xun. Call me Zhao. Sorry to be a little abrupt right now, but y'know, the whole imminent death thing kinda puts me on edge a bit." I grinned, and extended my hand to shake Raven's quickly. "If you run out too fast, I've got a few, but I need to hold on to some as well. Ready to go?" I asked.

"Sure, let's do this," he said, a little too calm for someone essentially rushing headlong to their own repeated demise.

"Sounds like a plan. Lead on!" I said, and began to follow a short distance behind him as he took a longer path to the gems. It was worth it, however, since we managed to avoid the King on the way. He stopped near the gems and spoke.

"Okay, my theory is that the size represents how powerful they are. So we might want to deal with the smaller ones before we try hacking away at the larger variety."

Makes sense. "Sounds like a good plan to me. Go for it, I've got your back."

He nodded. "Okay then," he said, and then leapt at the gem brandishing his blade. "Rue Revolver!" He spun around, striking the gemstone with his watery blade. The attack had its desired effect, and the gemstone dulled. However, the gem’s counterattack was swift. A Vak Don struck Raven for a reasonable amount of damage."Well, that was fun..." he said.

I quickly tossed him a Health Drink from my pack to get him back into fighting shape. "Darn right it was. That enough, or do you need another?"

"I'm good, it was only half my HP after all...ow. Let's keep going."

"Sounds like a plan. Hitting another small one, or a bigger one?"

"Hmm..." he said, looking around. Not too far away, we could both see Raquar targeting other small gemstones. "Let's try the medium ones."

"Good plan. Let's do it quickly, though. Go!"

"Okay...but you may want to move to the side a bit...if this goes bad, I don't want the guy with the resurrects to die too...."

That did make good sense. "Yeah, I gotcha. Let's do this."

"Alright then...Rue Revolver!" he cried, leaping at the gemstone. A Vak Kruz slammed into him in retaliation, and he took a Health Drink to restore his HP. The gem seemed unaffected by his first attack, so he continued. "Rue Kruz!" His spell hit the gem and dulled it, but the gem’s retaliation was almost unbelievable: ”OW!” he screamed as a Vulcan Pha enveloped him in flames, and when they were gone all that remained was his ghostly form.

Despite being out of the radius already, I had jumped back after feeling the heat of the summon. "Holy..." I muttered, for a moment unable to do anything but stare at Raven’s ghost in awe of the power I’d just witnessed. Sure, I’d seen other Freedom Fighters use powerful attacks… but I’d never seen one of us be so completely annihilated. It took me a moment to get over it, but eventually I shook off the feeling of powerlessness that the spell had seeded in me and used a Resurrect to bring my ally back into the world of the living.

"That...fucking...hurt...” he said, taking a Mage’s Soul as he spoke. ”Moving on."

"Looked like it. Let's go."

"Yeah, looks like these medium-sized ones take two spells to dull, and give twice the payback...." I nodded my agreement, though I hardly considered a Vak Kruz followed by a Vulcan Pha to be the equivalent of two Vak Dons. Perhaps the spells the gems cast were random in some way? Doesn’t matter… just keep going.

Raven looked over his shoulder to check the status of the elementals, and my gaze followed his to find the same situation: all that was left was the King, apparently focused somewhat on Phoenix. Well, he could pick significantly worse targets… at least Phoe is one of the more powerful people here. He should be able to buy us a few more minutes to deal with these damned gemstones.

"Okay then, let's do this...” said Raven, bringing my focus back to the gemstones, specifically the medium one towards which he seemed to be heading. ”Rue Revolver!" He again leaped towards the gem before beginning to spin around, slamming into it and receiving a Vak Don for his efforts. He took another of his own Health Drinks before firing off the second shot of his little combo. "Rue Kruz!" The gem lost its color just as the last two had, but not before a Vak Zot struck him in response. "Okay, that makes three...."

I tossed him another Health Drink. "Good work,” I said, impressed at his handiwork. He’d taken them all down with little to no assistance from me. “I'm getting a little worried about Phoenix though... should we head over and give him a hand? One person handling the king alone seems pretty... well, foolhardy, to be honest."

"Maybe, but neither of us has anywhere near the level to do any damage whatsoever. We'd just get in the way and get killed in an instant. Better we work at the gems here where we can make a difference, and try and make it so that the next time Sheena kills that thing, it will stay dead."

"Good point. The gems it is. Race you to the next one?” I said, grinning. I quickly popped a Health Drink of my own to heal myself up from the heat damage.

"You're on," he said, matching my grin and rushing off towards our next target.

Raven made a run for the gems, not sure how many of the Elementals were going to follow after him. The others seemed to have them dealt with though, so he didn't think he'd have to worry too much about them. As he ran, a little ping went off in his head, and he pulled up the flashmail as quick as he could.
From: Zhao Xun
To: Raven
RE: Wait up

Hey, Raven, I'd like to join you in working on those crystals. Wait up for me and we can head out together. Safety in numbers, neh?
Raven had to admit, it sounded like a good idea. However, it was also the first time any of the members of the group had even deigned to speak with him. He didn't know if it was just a spur of the moment thing, or just someone deciding that it was time to have him help a bit, but he really didn't care. He stopped in his tracks and waited calmly amidst the battlefield for the one named Zhao Xun to come to him. As the flashmail seemed to indicate, Zhao was following him, so it didn't take long.

"Hey there." Raven said as he caught up.

"Thanks for waiting. After seeing what those things can do, it seems like taking them on in pairs will be the past plan, neh? If you can take them down and tank the spells, I can keep bringing you back." Zhao suggested.

Raven looked at Zhao for a moment, and then over at the gems in the distance. They had been causing the group a lot of problems, and now that it seemed like Raven couldn't do much else, he figured he could give that a shot. For that purpose, Zhao's idea seemed like it'd work.

"Yeah, sounds like a plan. Besides, seems like the Elementals are clearing out a bit, so we may not have to worry too much about them in the mean time." Raven agreed.

"Yeah, we can thank our resident heavy artillery for that. Have you got enough Mage's Souls on you? I've got 11 ressurects, but they're a whole lot less useful if you don't have any SP afterwards. I'm tapped out myself from all that fighting." Zhao told him.

"I got a few, but not many, and I hope I don't have to use them all before we get inside...because lord knows I'll probably be needing them. Anyways, yeah, I'm Raven, and you're probably the first member of this group aside from Raine to say a word to me. Nice to meet you." Raven told him, holding out a hand.

It may have seemed like an odd gesture in the middle of a battle, but that was just Raven's style. He liked to make sure he was introduced properly to his allies.

"Yeah, I'm Zhao Xun. Call me Zhao. Sorry to be a little abrupt right now, but y'know, the whole imminent death thing kinda puts me on edge a bit." Zhao grinned, extending his hand to shake Raven's quickly. "If you run out too fast, I've got a few, but I need to hold on to some as well. Ready to go?"

"Sure, let's do this." Raven said, a little too calm perhaps while facing the prospect of getting burned alive repeatedly.

"Sounds like a plan. Lead on!" Zhao said, seemingly unphased by Raven's attitude.

Raven and Zhao ran for the gems, taking the long route to make sure they didn't end up too close to the King in the process. Raven had studied over the earlier message from Dien to make sure of a few things. They were going to have to hit them with Rue spells until the gems dimmed, but that was going to prompt some payback from them as well. There seemed to be more that one size of them as well, which in Raven's mind, meant either more endurance, or stronger spells. The both of them stopped by the gems, and Raven eyed them over quickly.

"Okay, my theory is that the size represents how powerful they are. So we might want to deal with the smaller ones before we try hacking away at the larger variety." Raven told Zhao, informing him of the general plan.

"Sounds like a good plan to me. Go for it, I've got your back." Zhao said, standing back a bit, obviously having read Dien's message as well.

"Okay then." Raven said with a nod before jumping up at the gems, sword in hand. "Rue Revolver!"

Raven probably didn't need to use Rue Revolver and waste all that SP in the process, but it was kind of a safety thing. In his mind, the splash damage might weaken the fire spell that was most likely going to follow the hit. Sure enough, the hit dimmed the small gem, but it also summoned a fireball from above him that crashed into his head and sent him to the ground. It was a strong spell, but it was still only a normal Vak Don. As much as it hurt, it still wasn't anything fatal. It still managed about half of his HP, but it was better than dying. Zhao threw him a Health Drink just as promised, and Raven's damage healed up a good bit, and he was left muttereing to himself.

"Well, that was fun..." he muttered.

"Darn right it was. That enough, or do you need another?" Zhao asked, not seeing Raven's health metre apparently.

"I'm good, it was only half my HP after all...ow. Let's keep going." Raven told him.

"Sounds like a plan. Hitting another small one, or a bigger one?" Zhao asked.

"Hmm..." Raven began, noting that Raquar was also trying the same thing that they were. "Let's try the medum ones."

"Good plan. Let's do it quickly, though. Go!" Zhao said, hurrying him up.

"Okay...but you may want to move to the side a bit...if this goes bad, I don't want the guy with the resurrects to die too..." Raven pointed out.

"Yeah, I gotcha. Let's do this." Zhao agreed, stepping back a bit.

"Alright then...Rue Revolver!" he yelled as he leaped for a medium gem.

Raven flew back from the gem as he got smacked with a Vak Kruz for a good chunk of his health. Raven slid on the ground and downed one of his own Health Drinks quickly to try and recover that health before raising a hand to the still normal gem, in hopes of dimming it with the next spell.

"Rue Kruz!" he yelled, firing the spell at the gem.

He did succeed in dimming it, unfortunately, he also succeeded in invoking its wrath. A huge mass of fire, a Vulcan spell of some variety blasted from the gem and completely wiped out all of his HP. He felt the pain, flesh being melted from bone, flesh melting, searing what was left of his flesh. His bones reduced to ash. Thank god it only lasted a second before he died. When the fire died away, Raven floated in the same spot in ghost form, his eyes closed and shaking a bit.

"OW!" he yelled, somewhat pointlessly at that moment.

"Holy...." Zhao muttered, before recovering from the shock of seeing that blast and throwing a Resurrect Raven's way.

"That...fucking...hurt..." Raven muttered, downing a Mage Soul quickly. "Moving on."

"Looked like it. Let's go." Zhao agreed.

"Yeah, looks like these medium-sized ones take two spells to dull, and give twice the payback..." Raven muttered, adding to the earlier theory.

He looked over his shoulder, to see what was going on with the Elementals quickly. Not wanting to have to deal with that as well as the gems. Seeing that they were all gone except the King, he smiled and turned back to the gems.

"Okay then, let's do this...Rue Revolver!" Raven yelled, jumping at it once more.

Raven repeated the process of the last one, jumping, using Rue Revolver, getting hit by another Vak Don and hitting the ground. He downed a Health Drink of his own, and then fired off another Rue Kruz at it. The gem dimmed, but not before smashing him from below with a Vak Zot, a spell he wasn't aware actually existed. Then again, when did that ever matter when hackers were involved?

"Okay, that makes three..." Raven muttered.

Zhao tossed Raven another Health Drink to up his HP a bit again, before looking over at the King.

"Good work. I'm getting a little worried about Phoenix though... should we head over and give him a hand? One person handling the king alone seems pretty... well, foolhardy, to be honest." Zhao pointed out.

"Maybe, but neither of us has anywher near the level to do any damage whatsoever. We'd just get in the way and get killed in an instant. Better we work at the gems here where we can make a difference, and try and make it so that the next time Sheena kills that thing, it will stay dead." Raven added, explaining the lack of logic involved in them attacking the thing at their levels.

"Good point. The gems it is. Race you to the next one? Zhao said, grinning.

"You're on." Raven said with a grin as the two of them took of for the next one.

Senna had never been one for following the dictate of others, so if Phoenix had been expecting her to take the healing potion and trot off to the gate like a good girl, he was sorely mistaken. His heart was in the right place, but one would think that given the makeup of the Freedom Fighters, he’d be used to people not following his instructions.

Still, the Health Drink was not accepted without a quick "Thanks" before it was used, and his comment reminded her that there was that whole other group up there working on the door. She paused to swipe stray bits of ash from her face and turn her attention there.

Zhao and the new guy – she really needed to get a name to put with him – were systematically working at the orbs there. Okay. Good. She might not be doing as much as a lot of them, but it seemed to her that if things kept going along this line, they would soon be through the gate. Maybe this trap wasn’t as bad as she’d first through.

Though, looking back at the field, that thought seemed justified. Almost all the elementals were down now. Phoenix was squaring off against the King Elemental, its glow making it stand apart from the others as the one who had been wreaking havoc to the largest extent. She started in that direction to help. He could probably bring it down on his own, given what she’d seen, but better safe than sorry, and that would free up the others to get that last of those gems taken out.

As she was moving, a change, an oddity of the light, caught her attention in the direction of the gate. She turned her head in time to see one of the level 60 creatures raising a shortblade, swinging for her side.

She didn’t have time to set herself, just to swear internally and then the blade passed through her – not cutting through, except at the very end, but mostly just passing. She felt the fiery burn of the blade as it pulled free in her back, but there was no wound in the front. This elicited another mental curse, hoping no one saw as she stomped a foot down and pivoted/lunged back, dealing back to the creature what it had dealt to her, though to a lesser degree. As she sliced into it, bits of rock and magma dripped off to form witches’ castles on the ground. As she backed off a few steps it came after her, mindless and stumbling.

Ahh, and therein lay the very basest of ideas. She danced before it, dodging, twisting away from its attacks (sometimes not quite getting completely away, sometimes getting a quick strike in herself) and leading it soon to her target, a place where ground zero could cause a bit more damage.

Then it was a quick swap of armor and she pulled forth a rolled scrap of paper. It was a spell these creatures had seen a few times on this field. One she hadn’t had a chance to try out yet. No time like the present.

"Absolute Zero."

The spell was big, big enough that from her casting spot it enveloped not only her own partner, but the one Phoenix was facing as well. That had been the point, after all. The temperature dropped, the ground sizzled and blackened beneath and around them, and soon she was huddled on the ground, staying out of the way of most of the ice and reveling in the snake-like sounds it made as it punched into the monsters.

As the spell faded, the level 60 was in poor shape and while the king wasn’t that badly off, it had taken a fair share of damage too. The Long Arm offered a quick salute to Phoenix and went on the move again. If no one else came in to help finish this level 60 off, she felt confident she could do so herself.

(OOC: all spells by gems made with 2d4)

The plan had begun, and from what he could tell, it was going well so far. Even without having to tell people, it seemed like the natural divisions in the group were taking shape. Stronger players engaged in combat, while Zhao and Raven made haste towards the gems along the canyon wall. In fact, the only thing left to fight was the King Elemental – and all that it could really do was take swings at people. Granted, at level 80, that was all it needed to do to be effective in combat, but even so, as long as they could keep killing it until all of the gems were dull, it would work well.

Sheena was off to the side, waiting patiently to have her body returned to her so she could fight, but her attention was in the same place as his was: watching as fighter after fighter took on the king in stunning displays of power. Hardly a moment went by in which the giant would have time to react, let alone breathe. With all the hits that came, it was a wonder he was still going.

Or rather, it was good planning on behalf of the hackers who occupied the field. Any large group of players would be able to take down the elemental army quickly, but there weren’t many who would think to attack the gems around the outside that kept the thing alive. That was why the Freedom Fighters were best suited for the job.

It was then that the thought crossed his mind: getting in was proving to be ridiculously easy. As the video that Marionette had shown them dictated, it would be up until a certain point. Dien guessed that point to be the opening of the door in front of them, which would presumably happen once they killed off the gemstones. So, with the king occupied by the others, the fiery blademaster sought out to help his friend and new comrade wreak all kinds of havoc on the shiny rocks (though not without a stop to give Sheena the Resurrect that Canti had neglected).

There was something strange he’d noticed, though. The effects of Ap Do and Ap Vakz were just the same as they usually were, but his Rig Geam wasn’t being nearly as effective as he’d known it to be. Since being revived, he’d expected his SP bar to have more than filled up, but as of yet it was just reaching halfway. What the hell? Was it a side effect of having been on fire a few minutes ago? Casting the spell again had no effect – he was stuck with practically no SP regeneration at all, which meant that things like skills were going to be, at least until it leveled out, that much harder to come by.

All at once, while his charge ensued, the reason for his planning was given body. From the ground, one of the Giant Elementals was raised to life, and he watched as Senna gave it hell in the form of a massive ice spell – practically killing it in front of his eyes and his path. Well, might as well not leave it to rest. Mid-charge, he pushed off the ground and ripped Lake & Sea through the thing’s neck, ending its short existence again.

“Sorry,” he said, landing and sheathing his sword once again so he could run well, “it was on the way. Focus on the King?” It was basically the plan he’d instituted from the beginning with her, so there was nothing new there. No more words were needed, and so he was off again towards the nearest of the gems: one of the largest ones. From paying attention to Raven and Zhao’s efforts, he surmised that it would likely take three successive Rue skills to eradicate the stone’s luster.

But he didn’t have the SP for it. Two skills at most could be eeked out from his current situation: he needed a boost. Hand shot into his bag of infinite holding and pulled out one of two Mage’s Souls. Wait, what? Only two?! Oh hell, this was going to suck! In the interest of not being wasteful, the blademaster figured it would be best to gun for the smaller ones first, as they were the easiest to kill. In his current situation, he had nine, maybe ten skills he could cast before he would be depleted. Counting up the gems revealed three smaller ones, two medium ones, and two larger ones. That called for thirteen skills: he couldn’t take them all out. Well, might as well start big.

In rapid succession, Rue Slash was twice unleashed on the gem next to him, completely depleting his SP and calling him to activate the scroll at his hand and return it. Once again, the skill was activated, and as the sixth strike landed, the thing seemed to glow a little more brightly before unleashing its vengeance on him (3, 1). Okay, so it wasn’t the most dramatic counterattack, but a Vak Don was still enough to help him realize the detriment that the field had been doing to his health. A moment for a Health Drink, and he was off again towards the next gem: the other big one.

It wasn’t too far away, and it wasn’t like he could complain. More time in transit meant more SP…he thought. Not having Rig Geam work like he wanted was turning out to be a major pain in the neck. He hadn’t gained even a quarter of what he should have by this point, and there was nothing to help it. It wasn’t something he could figure out, and he knew that the minute he tried to stop and think it through, other pressing issues would surface: Leek, Amy, the LightHackers, Danielle, all of them were being pushed back in his mind as he ran the gauntlet that the puppeteer had given them to run.

But running, it seemed, had already brought him to his next target. Once again, Rue Slash was called upon to sink its power into the stone not once, but twice in succession, leaving him short SP of the third skill. In order to finish it, he’d need to wait a good minute, or use his last Mage’s Soul. Wait, he’d bought more of those, hadn’t he? Rue skills and spells were all equippable to him at this point, so the only thing he needed to be able to use them was the SP backing: why he’d bought more Mage’s Souls. Checking his inventory again revealed his error: it had been twenty two, not two. Well that changed things a bit. No more time was spent waiting for SP to recover, and the item in his hand was used to bring about the gem’s end.

Like its counterpart, the other large gem glowed slightly after the sixth glow and cast another anticlimactic counterattack (1, 1}. A tornado of flames washed up his form, but was over quickly. Skin was burnt in a few spots, but a quick cast of La Repth remedied that. On to the next gem: one of the two remaining medium ones. This one was closer than last time, and the distance was covered quickly. Rue Revolver was issued into its surface (to change things up, he thought), but before he could recover SP for a second round, it seemed to want revenge for its fallen brothers (tails, 3, 2).

Two balls of fire rained from the sky upon him, bathing his form and pulling him to the near-molten earth in disgrace. The pain was unimaginable, reminding him of only a few days before when he’d first been infected. One hand sank into the ground, rendering it largely useless from the forearm down, while burns from merely being that close to the heat seared away at the rest of his flesh. Rising first to his knees and then to his feet, the blademaster coughed, watching as a faint tint of red faded in and out of the scene around him. With his good hand, he searched his inventory for the one item that could save him: a Healing Potion, and with it, another Mage’s Soul.

As his flesh was restored, a second Rue skill was poured into the gem, which caused it to lash out with yet more power (OrVak Rom, 1, 3) before going dull. Swearing loudly, the blademaster used yet another Healing Potion and moved to the next gem and unleashing a quick pair of Rue Slashes to it. It too responded violently (2, 2), giving a GiVak Kruz and eliciting yet more healing time on the part of Dien, which caused him to burn yet another Healing Potion. His last targets? The three smaller gems above the door.

Perhaps the most ironic about this (IRL, too) was the fact that as the gems got smaller and smaller, their counter attacks were getting stronger and stronger. All that remained of these foes were the three smallest gems, so logically, the next few moves he was going to make were going to hurt.

A lot.

Yet another Mage’s Soul was burnt into recovering lost SP, giving it back to him in full to prepare for what lay next: three skills into the last and smallest gemstones. His first target went down quickly with a Rue Slash, retaliating by sending a trio of fiery globs (3, 3) down on him from some unseen portal in the heavens. While it hurt, his primary concern was the HP loss, which was made up with yet another Healing Potion. The action was repeated for a second time, only this one yielded a triplet of converging deluges (2, 3). Swearing silently, he raised himself from the heated earth and targeted the last of the gems. At the same time, it began to glow more brightly, and he knew he had to act quickly.

With his last energies, he unleashed the skill, not bothering to waste any more health items when the fight was so close to over. Rue Revolver was called, and as it activated, he could feel the veritable ocean of burning embers crashing down on him (2, 4). It hurt, but before his HP was fully depleted, the sword struck home, and his goal had been accomplished. All at once the PhaVak Don was abruptly ended as the spell’s caster redirected its energies into something far more sinister (4, 4). He was dead before the Vulcan Pha could activate, his ghost residing next to the accomplishment he’d made. None of the gems retained their luster, and with the temporary relief from pain, he sat on the earth, finding its softer surface strangely comfortable.

Re: Gated Folding Stare; Fighting Through Fire!

Feeling a great sense of tension seem to rip at his body as the merciless spells came crashing down upon him, the Heavy Blade character slowly felt his life begin to deteriorate faster than that same speeding bullet superman would stop at the last minute by racing beside it. However, just as his eyes closed and his soul began to separate from his body, Hacorie felt an extreme warmth. Not like the spells he had just endured, but instead like a mother clasping her child close to her body. The radiated feel given off was from a certain item used by the Long Arm Senna: a revive. Now rejuvenated, at least in the health aspect, Hac was ready to continue his onslaught. However, this would be a hard thing to accomplish. Why? Because in his few seconds of death, the team had created a massive assault on the elementals and newly formed crystalline objects.

One…Two…Three…..5 bazillion

One by one the monsters fell as Hac kept a mental tally. Phoenix was using his powers to simply decimate the opponents faster than they could cast revive. All the other members were doing about the same until only one beast was left, the King Elemental. Feeling a sense of obligation, since the group had worked so brilliantly to destroy the platoon of foot soldiers in only a couple of minutes, Hac decided that he had to alone destroy the remaining beast by whatever means necessary. Sliding one hand into the pouch at his side, the Heavy Blade warrior pulled out a small vial of a funky blue liquid which resembled an opal version of the fake sorcerer stones from Full Metal Alchemist. Without hesitation, Hac tightened his grip tremendously as the glass from the vial shattered. However, the broken glass now embedded in his hand was worth it; now, Hac had enough SP to unleash a flurry of elemental attacks to destroy the remaining high level elemental.

“Learn quick guys, first I shall start off with a double cast: MeRue Zot! MeRue Rom!” The Heavy Blade exclaimed as the hilt as his side began to glow simultaneously with the rings upon his wrists. As the two illuminated the clothing of the player with their shine, two massive glyphs shot out toward the King Elemental. As each circular shaped pattern reached the ground located underneath the monster, two separate, unequal, and different things began to happen. First, the sky directly above the glyph turned a deep blue as if a rip in space had occurred. Second, the ground began to rumble beneath the monster. Within a split second, a wall of ice dropped from the ceiling as piercing spikes erupted from the ground. One by one the spikes skewered the King until he had holes all over his body. At the same time, the icy wall began to swirl at a quick pace. The icy wall quickly broke into sections as the winds cut the ice like a knife. With each cut, shortening the surface area of ice, the wind began to carry the smaller pieces until a violent whirlwind of icy debris was left intact.

As soon as it had begun, the remnants of the two spells disappeared leaving only a holey elemental. However, due to the substance the enemy was made of, the spells effects were quickly covered by gigantic flames. Besides, the great deal of HP loss, it looked as if nothing had changed about the beast. With a slight twitch of his eye, Hacorie began to wonder why the monster had yet to fall. See, the Heavy Blade aligned with the element of Rue had two lovely items which boosted his stats in the element to a higher integer compared to a normal player. With his curiosity on the monster continually on rise, Hac had to think of a plan and quick. After all, his assault most likely caught the attention of the beast. If nothing else, Hac had saved his lower level co-workers from an imminent death.

“Why won’t it die?!” Hac called as his hand once again slipped into his pocket. However, instead of any type of glass or metal object

Allowing no time for the monster to react, the Heavy Blade pushed off with one of his back feet and quickly began an all out sprint toward the beast. With hand cupping the hilt of his sword, only one word echoed throughout the mind of the character: KILL…. One, Two, Three, Eight paces forward and finally the monster reacted with a counter. A red aura shot from the beast and landed just beneath the feet of the Heavy Blade. With a smile creeping upon his face, Hac stopped his front foot in one fluid motion while bending it in the process. As his second leg came forward due to centrifugal force, Hac used the energy to push off the ground, right as his weigh changed from front to back. Watching his feet, now in the air, Hac noticed a red veil begin to encircle the entire parameter around him.

BiVak Rom was coming his way. Of course, Hac already knew the spell was coming. Right as he caught a glimpse of the spell’s glyph, he knew. See, each type of spell carries a distinct pattern when the illuminating lines appear on the ground. Since he was already in air, and the spell was using violent, and hot, winds, the Heavy Blade was given more velocity. This came at a price though, his health.

Exiting the Vak tornado while it was still in progress, Hac watched and pinpointed the trajectory of his landing point. To his surprise, it would be directly in front of the King Elemental.

Perfect… He thought as the grip on his sword began to tighten to the point where beads of sweat were dripping out of the clenched fist. As his feet touched the ground, Hac pulled his sword out to the right side of his body to where the blade was directly in front of him and the hilt was parallel to his shoulder width. Taking one step forward, the Heavy Blade flicked his wrist allowing the thin sharp end of his blade to become closer to the ground. He then shoved his arms upward as if he had a spear in hand. Feeling the heat intensify as his hands became close to the fire demon, Hac used the one trump card he had acquired: a Cygnus.

Of course, Hac had a higher powered spell at his disposal, but the Cygnus was special since it allowed him not to waste any SP at all.

Watching as a sphere of ice began to appear around the two, Hac withdrew his sword while allowing his body to stumble backward to the ground. One by one, shards of ice began to impale the beast as the demon let out a terrible scream. As the last sickle struck, the beast fell to the ground, dead.

Was the battle finally over?

Hac could not be sure, but before anything else happened, the character downed one more Mage’s Soul to once more raise his SP.
