The power of any fourth-level spell was a sight to behold, graphically. Even if a low-level player used a hacked weapon to cast it with no power behind it, it would still look great. Takua, with all his magical essence, had the clout to back it up. The damage stacked up.

Sekai's Flashmail came, and Baron frowned as he read it. It wasn't that the strategy wasn't good; after all, getting the boss weakened while strengthening their powerhouses was effective in most cases. The problems were twofold, however; for one, many bosses were very resistant, if not outright immune to status effects. While the Willowman had been proven to be susceptible to a few here and there, it had been a struggle getting more than a handful on, and a turn with no effect was a turn wasted when they couldn't act freely. Maybe in a more free-paced battle where they could move and dodge as they chose it would be effective, but here...?
To: Sekai
From: Baron
Re: New Strategy?

While the plan is sound in theory, remember that we're limited on our turns and movement. If we could cast four or five times to land an effect once among the failures, that'd be great, but we get one action per turn, two if we include our companions for those of us who have them. A miss is a turn wasted, here. If we had some chance of landing them effectively, maybe, but so far even with hacked items we're having a hard time weakening him and it doesn't seem worth the effort. Sorry. :( Buffing, on the other hand, I can do!
A quick check of the status effects on the party showed a variety of Ap Do spells in place, as well as a Rig Saem on Sheena. Baron thought about his options before pulling out a tarot card he had been saving. While it was a powerful item, it was a one-shot deal that he had meant to save for a serious situation. However, odds were that after they were done here they would be heading back to Yamiyo, where he could stock up again. That being said, it was best to get their powerhouse really going in order to finish the fight as quickly as possible. With that in mind, he threw The Strength to Sheena, letting its power take hold and give the woman one of every Ap in the game. Much like the Willowman's own buffs, her physical and magical parameters were increased further, both offense and defense. Her elemental resistances also went up; she was a tank and a weapon of mass destruction at the same time.

Once that was done, Higure unleashed his remaining scroll, releasing the Raging Plasma and letting the GiRai Rom spell exploded beneath the Willowman. The second-level electrical tornado wasn't a particularly powerful example of a spell cast, but damage was damage, and hopefully the Willowman would be that much closer to its defensive shield again.

The Strength was a great tarot card, too powerful for the normal game, locked away on Yamiyo for the exclusive use of hackers. Putting it on Sheena, in many situations, would just be overkill. In this one? Well, they would find out. Did a physical power buff even work on her?

Meanwhile, lightning crackled around the boss as he took yet more damage, inching ever closer to the freedom of one of their remaining two fighters.

She knew it wasn't enough, the frown covering her face. What could she possibly offer up to this fight besides her new acquired talent? The answer was... not much. She just wasn't high enough or skilled enough in battle to make a big difference one way or the other. Except for the sound. A skill she was quickly becoming more aware of how it worked and what she could possibly do with it. Sekai's message, full of wisdom and logic as it was lost on the young twin blade. She had not the power nor the items to assist in any helpful way aside from perhaps one healing scroll and a few attack scrolls. The thought giving her an idea in which direction she was going to go now that she felt the vines loosen once more.

With one hand she continued her subtle movements knowing it was going to take another turn or even two before she would have enough gathered to make a difference. But it had already been proven, she could still gather and use an item all during her turn. Unsure as to how or why but the young woman didn't much care to figure out such things at the moment but rather just go with the flow. A concept she hadn't been very good at until this game and even then struggled...always wanting to be in control.

A scroll appeared in her hand and Talal read off the incantation until the seal popped open. The Lightning Rod scroll exploding above the Willowman's head in a brilliant display of electric light. Everyone else was attacking and damage of any kind was proving useful. It also showed they could work as a team even if because of the turn based scenario, they had to act as individuals. Her other hand continued to gather as the vines re-tightened and briefly her eyes glanced back at Takua although she still wasn't sure why.
Don't walk behind me; I may not lead. Don't walk in front of me; I may not follow. Walk beside me that we may be as one.

Lightning had two benefits for Talal; it was damaging, and it was loud. A clap of thunder certainly helped her gather some of the sonic energy for her next assault.

An assault that would come perhaps later than she might like, as her Ap Do buff wore off after her turn ended.

(Sadly, there were no great indicators at the moment from Talal saying that a Thunder Spell - or rather, the sound of one going off - would have an impact on the sonic energy she had. If there had been, at that moment, Canti would have used one of his own thunder spells on-hand to keep that up. MeRai Don or Kruz in the hands of a Twin Blade wasn't bad. So instead, he was looking into Sekai's flashmail. Once he'd read it over, he felt kind of annoyed, since he was definitely pulling his weight to the tune of her suggestion, for the most part, AND responsible for dealing some damage. So...)
TO: Sekai

SUBJECT: RE: New Strategy?

I can understand the sentiment, Sekai. Teamwork is essential and maybe some parts aren't in perfect synch, but I have been switching support and attack whenever I feel it's necessary and am responsible for quite a few of the buffs and debuffs around right now. I'm using my own discretion, but I'm doing the most that I can with what I've got right now. The real problem is the format of this battle.
(What they needed right now, since Sheena was Ap-Everything'd now, was to cut the Willowman's stuff down to size. He was sped-up and put up on a number of stats. COUNTER! Canti threw The Tower at him and the Bogie cast Dek Do on the Willowman. Between the two, he would probably no longer be sped up, and in fact dragged down severely.)
I'll have a doozy of a sig later, I swear. It'll reflect ".hack//CODE" an' everything.

Hey look! A profile! It's got items and stats and things! Cool! If it isn't fully up to date, it will be, so don't worry 'bout it.

Whether the Willowman was building resistances to deks, or their natural inability to work all the time was kicking in, was hard to say. Either way, the Tower card refused to apply every single dek, as advertised. It did, however, have some effect. Between it and Shadow's own Dek Do, the Willowman's Ap Do was cancelled out, but no further slow was applied. Dek Ruem was also applied, and the Ap Vakz removed, but that seemed to be it.

Maoh's next move was going to be no different from his last. He had no other resources as his SP recharged due to his items being taken off of him. He could keep wailing on the Willowman, which so far seemed to be going smoothly as the only one worth attacking, but then there was smug-McBitchface sitting on her throne at the far end of the room. Could she be worth attacking? Would getting her involved send the message of "Cut the crap and let's talk alliance or whatever already." He'd wait to see if they were in dire straits before taking that avenue however, and stick to using her minion as a scratching-post in the meantime. Vine unwound, and Maoh sprang into action claws raking across the face of the Willowman.

Attacks came and went, debuffs came into play, and slowly they began to whittle down the Willowman again. Really, there wasn't much else they could do with their team limited in the way that they were, so offense was going to be their greatest defense, especially with the speed advantage they had. Baron considered his options after powering up Sheena; the Willowman still had Ap Vorv in effect, which would give it a beefier defense, and that was not something you wanted on a boss. Even though Sheena was a powerhouse, it was better to be safe than sorry if those extra points of defense counted, so Baron decided to bite the bullet and give a debuff a shot. He doubted it would work, but on the off-chance it did, the Twin Blade switched in his Enja weapons and fired off a Dek Vorv to see if he could remove that defense bonus that the Willowman had going for him.

Higure, on the other hand, didn't have much to do with his limited actions, so the wolf simply lunged forward to sink his teeth into the hopefully weaker defenses, attempting to rip off chunks of wood from the Willowman's leg. The attacks were brief, the turn short, but hopefully the effects would be long-lasting and ensure the party's success.

(Well...at least he brought the guy down to normal speed. There's only room for ONE king of speed, and his name was Canti. The next move of the dynamic duo of darkness was for Shadow to cast Ap Do on Talal and for the Twin Blade to focus a penetrating blast of the Darkness Flame on the Willowman's leg. The object of this was to gimp the leg so that it was either blown right off...or at least gimped so he'd have to walk around like Gregory House.)

Canti's shot blasts a sizable chunk out of the Willowman's leg, but not quite enough to destroy its functionality.

Next up: The Willowman

The Willowman creaked when he moved, feeling the strain of the pure physical damage to his form, as well as the weight of the debuffs applied to him. His fruit buff hadn't lasted. Hefting his staff, he pressed the tip to the ground and ran.

Rather than running towards any player, the Willowman ran in a circle around the entire party. A circle that was etched in green energy left by his staff. When he reached his starting point, the circle closed, with the Willowman as well as the party inside it. The green energy flashed white, and layer upon layer of runes appeared within. Those savvy enough to know the game lore and symbology might note symbols for elements and status spells, before they're overlaid with too much to recognize.

When the symbols reached maximum density, the entire circle flashed bright, and when it faded, the whole group seemed to be covered in a faint white dust. Even the Willowman was covered.

Two things will become apparent when the team is allowed to move again. First, all buffs and debuffs have been removed, both from the boss and from all party members. Second, items and spells that apply buffs and debuffs are locked and cannot be used.

It would seem that, even though the Willowman has potent debuffs at his disposal, feeling a taste of his own medicine caused him to lock away the functionality even from himself.

Of all of the things Takua had expected, finding every status ailment or buff negated was not one of them. He supposed that the Willowman, having only one turn, was at a disadvantage in that way...but having the ability to buff himself so much better than the whole party, on the other hand, meant that his buffs meant more.

Still though. Everyone was at full HP, or close to it. Buffs could no longer be applied. Talal was operating at the maximum hearing that he could lend her, assuming even that such a buff still worked, although his own had taken quite the hit. Really though, that just left him with attacking to do, and this time he wasn't going into an Ap Ganz. So when the PhaGan Don slammed down, there was nothing to get in its way. Vesica also joined in, letting an ice lance plow through the air at the Willowman. At least he had heavy damage to lend, but being suddenly restricted to only attack and healing was...oddly annoying that way.

The Willowman, despite his stoicism, was definitely showing the effects of all of the damage he had sustained in the prolonged exchange. One-armed, with a head and torso cracked and broken, a leg missing a piece, he would certainly fall sooner rather than later.

Demorian, too, found the restrictions on buffs and debuffs irritating.
