The morning dawned fair and clear, or atleast as fair and clear as it could be in the dark forest. The faint light glowed through the thick tree branches, giving the clearing an ethereal look.
Gingitsune turned to Rayo, glad that he was finally alright, and smiled. "We're moving now, I think. It's morning, and there's no reason to stay here any longer."
The players left the house, the old woman had disappeared, and though a breakfast of misoshiru had been spread on the little table, they bypassed it quickly, remembering the events of last night.
The path had shifted it's course since they had left it, and was now headed west deeper into the forest. The sign next to it was completely blank, offering no riddle or word of advice.
They started along down the path into what seemed like an ever growing darkness, Gingitsune's keen violet eyes spotted something strange in the distance. It was something glowing white, and yet it wasn't any sort of light. It was an enormous spider's web. The lair of the beast, and it lay straight ahead of them.
There was a soft shuffling sound behind her, and Gingitsune quickly turned around, trying to pick out what had startled her, and suddenly noticed that the path that had been behind them had vanished. Instead there was a thick grove of trees, which looked as if it had been there the whole time, making soft noises in the gentle breeze.
The hairs on the back of Gingitsune's neck prickled softly, and a shudder ran down her spine.
"I don't like this..." she whispered.
Suddenly something large came flying at Gingitsune, who ducked and rolled over to avoid it. Looking around she still saw nothing, except a swinging branch... heading once more at her.
"It's the trees!" she yelled, warning the others.
It was true, they were completely surrounded, the path was gone except for that small flickering of pale web light in the distance.
"We have to clear a path!" she said, ducking a tree branch only to be hit from behind by another.
Her teammates were all struggling with the same problem, the trees had stealthily closed in, and were now a close packed wall. The trees had to be destroyed, before all of them were pulverized by the powerful branches...

(there Rayo, see? I promised that I would post today, maybe a little late- but it's still today! ^_^)

Trees on all sides.

Branches everywhere.

Foes surrounding him.

Attacks from all directions.

Nighthand was in his element.

Drawing his blade, the Magnifier he had gotten from Asgard so long ago, Nighthand began charging his blade with the power of Vak. Glowing softly, the steel in his hand pulsed red, and erupted in flames. Pumping more and more energy into the blade, the fire grew and grew. Finally, surrounded in a fiery aura, Nighthand leveled off the energy flowing into his blade.

As silently and swiftly as an arrow fresh from a bow, Nighthand dashed towards the nearest grove of trees. After a night of magically-induced sleep, he had all the stamina in the world it seemed, and his reflexes were at their peak.

A branch swings at him fom the front. A bad move; his blade easily slices it off. A rustling, and a second branch from behind. Ducking under the strike, his blade remains raised and cuts through the wooden foe. But still, branches converge from all angles.

Time to go for a source.

Two branches swing at him from the front with bone-braking force. Slicing the first, Nighthand leaps. In mid-air, he pulls a Speed Charm from his belt and activates it's magic. With ever-increasing speed, he runs up the branch and jumps past the tree he was on.

Three branches that had been following him were not so fortunate.

The branches slammed with shattering force into the tree he had bypassed. Splinters flew everywhere, and the tree broke in half. The top half came crashing down. Leaping, he lands on the tree before it lands, and runs along it. Just as it hits the ground, he leaps again, landing at the peak of a second tree. It shakes, as if a sudden just of wind had hit. Nighthand lumps upwards, flips, and dives headfirst downwards.

Or rather, Sword-first.

His leap, combined with the pull of gravity and the fiery blade in his hand serve to make a wedge. He splits the tree cleanly, leaving two smoking halves toppling to the ground.

Leaping to another tree, he rests on a branch a moment, while his teammates fight. Whenever a branch tries to strike at him, he leaps off, and waits for the next.

Without even thinking, he resorted to his most typical yet also most effective strategy. He began evasive maneuvers while he thought of a good plan. Ducking under a low swinging branch, he noticed several others had begun to run around as well. Gingitsune had evaded the first attack but it was unclear what she planned to do without her wand. Even without her Dark History, her armor allowed her several powerful spells to assist her. Nighthand had moved on the offensive and seemed to be rather effective. Leaping back a few feet, Rayo avoided getting smashing by a branch imitating a hammer.

He whipped off his cougar and slid it into his cloak as his left hand pulled out his time headband. Rolling to the left, he avoided a few roots that had rose to knock him down. Still on his knees, he fastened the headband to his forehead, as it would give him both a useful skill and a much higher evasion. Quietly he muttered Ap Do and instantly felt a surge of energy swell inside him. Everything almost seemed slow motion in comparison. He clearly could see the branch bend back before swinging to the side in a swiping motion to clip his head. Waiting for the right moment, he didn’t move until it was a foot away. He ducked the blow and then rolled back to avoid the attack from turning into a smashing attack.

Dropping his wand into the bag slung over his left shoulder, his right hand then grasped the desired wand and pulled it out. These pitiful creatures, he wasn’t sure exactly what they were but he at least figured they were of the wood element. Naturally, it made sense as trees were assaulting them. He was a lightning mage and a strategist. That meant knowing when something was effective and when it was not. His Basho Wand had the spell Gan Don. The earth element was very useful when opposing wood so it only made sense. He stabbed his wand down violently against the earth, almost wishing to chop away at some maniacal root that was protruding and preparing to strike at him.
“…Gan Don…” A rock materialized above one of the branches heading towards Vera. It soared downward very quickly and hit the branch at its midsection, snapping it in half and nullifying its attack while dealing damage. Even if it couldn’t be controlled like lightning, his variety of spells made up for that.

It took Gingitsune less than a minute to decide what she had to do. Though it was true that she had spells enough even without her wand, she felt as if there was something else beckoning to her between the wall of trees. She had to reach the spider's web, that was the end of the field, she felt it in her bones, and she did something she had never done before, she ran from the battle. Ducking under, and leaping over, tree branches she made her way steadily into the thick of things, ignoring the thrashing of the boughs and the attacks of her comrades. The white, soft glowing light from the spider's web served as her beacon, and called her forward.
There were thirty trees in that clearing, thirty fighting trees, and it was not a simple task to dodge all of their flailing limbs. Even when she got to the edge of the clearing, only bruised lightly and cut where the tips of the branches had just brushed her. A large slash down her cheek was bleeding, but she ignored it, shielding only her eyes.
The trees had gathered thickly, and the space between their trunks was minute. Gingitsune inhaled deeply, held her breath, and struggled through, suffering from gruesome visions of being squashed to death between the two wriggling trees. When she finally made it she exhaled, looking backwards to see how the others were doing.
They seemed to be in control of the situation, though quite outnumbered.
Gingitsune caught Rayo's eye and motioned silently at her objective, the web a few feet away. Rayo nodded, and understood.
The web was even more immense than Gingitsune had imagined. It's glittering luminescence came from the millions of reflecting dew drops that had caught on its surface. The spider was nowhere to be seen, and Gingitsune crept warily closer, with no real battle strategy of her own, considering that she had no wand. Spontaneity was her favourite strategy, she came up with it as she went along.
Gingitsune touched her finger to the web, and pulled it back sharply again as it became caught on the sticky thread.
There was nothing here except the web.
It all seemed rather anticlimatic until a horrible rustling sound came to Gingitsune's ears from the forest. It was a slow, ponderous shaking of trees and bushes, and screaming of birds that made Gingitsune shiver.
"Here it comes..." she whispered, softly.
From the trees emerged an enormous spider-like creature, with clanging metallic jaws and deep, red eyes.
It scanned the area, up and down, and Gingitsune shrank back into the shrubbery before it could see her, feeling the ground around her for something... anything she could fight with. Spells were forgotten. This field had a primordial feel to it, and it was only natural to fight in primitive ways. The spider had no magic, and neither would Gingitsune.
A few feet away, Gingitsune's hand finally closed over the hilt of a slightly-rusted sword which was solid despite it.
"Good enough..." Gingitsune said, as she felt the foul breath of the creature nearing, and the many foul eyes focusing squarely on her.

What persistent plants. He counted as many as five to seven branches lunging at him at a time. His defensive plan was going well thanks to his increased agility. Duck and roll protected him yet again as another branch hit only dirt. That unlucky branch had a rock plunge down on top of it, shattering the bark to bits. The interchange between evasion and Gan Dons was working…slowly but surely.

He swerved to the left as another branch was thrust by. A quick jab from the bottom edge of the staff peeled a sliver of bark from it but barely dented it. He couldn’t rely on physical attacks to injure it…or at least he mentally grinned…physical attacks of his own. Anything can be injured by a strong enough forced…even an equal force. He grinned as two branched maneuvered closer in hopes of catching him off guard. He closed in on one, the one higher up in the air. He bent over and pushed up, landing in the same position on top of his desired branch. As he expected, the other branch moved straight up to follow him and made contact with the branch he was using to balance himself and take a ride on. He leapt again as the ascending branch plowed through the branch, breaking it into pieces. He barely needed a weapon while he continued to fight brainless apparitions of wood.

Alas, Rayo was tiring of destroying branches. He dropped his wand into his bag, his next plan going into motion. He back flipped on top of the branch coming in behind him. Rayo sat on it as it flowed forward. It was a faster way of transportation. He got up and darted across its wood and leapt off, planting his right hand on the ground only to push up and flip over the next branch that found it eating dirt and pebbles from the ground. Falling into a roll, he cleared the next branches in his path until he reached Gingitsune. She seemed to be waiting for the creature, the final beast. She seemed determined to fight it…even on her own. She didn’t even seem to want any help. He quietly murmured a second Ap Do that empowered the wavemistress along with a warning not to die before he rejoined the frenzy with his demented yet mindless opponents.

Vera sat in the corner as she waited too be attacked. "Wood is no match for fire." she said pointing her wand out as she noticed a branch heading towards her. "BiVak Rom" she yelled as the flaming twisters englufed the branch

OOC: Glad to hear it vera. Many thanks Gingitsune-sama, the avatar is lovely. By the way, in exchange for the speed i deserve as a twinblade(which means that me and argilus are the fastest, no contest) I have forced a special rule on myself. All of my magic/healing etc. is touch based. Yes kiddies, i must make physical contact when casting ANY spell. It only seems fair.

Yawning loudly, hijinx keeps her hands at her sides while she skillfully spins slowly to the right and watches as the branches slam into the earth, digging a large trench in the soft dirt. Stepping over the defunct branch on her left, she watches another of the appendiges of the wooden adversaries crash rudely into the ground where she had been standing. Crossing her arms behind her back, she looks up and counts off three steps backwards and stops next to tirath. Looking about in his usual ready stance, his eyes get wide as a perticularly large branch flattens the small hill where hijinx was once again. The two turn their heads and look at each other, tirath looking slightly stunned at tree's assault landing literally inches in front of him, and hijinx looking rather bored and frowning slightly at the rather severe lack of speed these trees posessed. Yelling at hijinx from her spot in the battle vera orders hijinx to "do something". Nodding a couple times and taking her stance, the lucky rabbit herself bounds into the fray. Smashing feet first into the trees, hijinx bounces a multitude of times and quickly ascends to the top of the overgrown shrubs. Doing a split and bending backwards in air above the thick forest, she laughs maniacly and grabs onto the branches that had shot out at her, forcing the unorthidox dodge. Dangling some ten feet over the tree tops, she rolls herself up to the opposite limb and runs down it. Stopping dead at the tree limbs connection, she places her hand on the tree itself, and holding a scroll in the other hand she chants the magic words. The foilage suddenly burst into flame as she drops to the ground. Flashing vera a quick thumbs up, she watches all of the adjencent trees catch fire, turning the air an amazing reddish hue and causing a pretty display of embers to fall while the fire spread.

He quickly found himself with trees to combat. They failed to injure him but also failed to leave him alone. He tired of his current idea. He had to keep changing his plans for his own sake. That way, his opponents would be unable to react and that gave him a significant advantage. They had failed to adapt to handle even one of his strategies so far but by changing, he wouldn’t be vulnerable because of a pattern flaw. He refused to ever allow that to happen. Not when he had other useful plans to execute. Switching plans to inferior ones was something he would not do. Fortunately, he had other good plans coming to mind as this monotonous and tedious battle progressed.

He watched and waited…counting all the while as branches resumed the chase. They had almost broken off when he neared Gingitsune before. Perhaps they were afraid to stretch their branches so far? Perhaps they wanted to leave the wavemistress to the main threat. His last theory was they themselves were afraid of it.

His left hand steadied the bag as his right one quickly slipped in. He felt the smooth body of a wand and his ran his fingers to the point without even using his eyes to confirm his suggestion as he pulled it out and readied himself. He knew his wands. His Great Elite would assist him in his latest plan.

Already eleven branches were within range. All were coming from one major area, up and center. Others searched him out at eye level center, left, or right. One or two peered in from the far left or right while converging to the middle of their formation. At last one more joined their ranks. He shouted the words to summon lightning through the form of a GiRai Rom. The sky was unresponsive. No bright lights could be seen above the trees’ leaves. No sparks dropped were found. Not even a crackle or clap of thunder had been heard. From all outside appearances, it had failed to produce a spell. It clearly wasn’t his currently high SP, which had plenty of time to recover between uses. As the branches closed into within three feet of him…he waited. The lead branch was far closer than the others. The others trailed behind varying amounts, some a few inches, others as much as six feet. Time stopped for Rayo, as the forward branch was mere inches away from his skull. As the rate it traveled, it would piece his head below his hair yet square between his eyes three inches up to the nearest inch. Rayo never got a chance to see where the branch would hit though. Several bolts of lightning shot up from the ground and pierced the closest branch and spun off to slice and slash each branch following it. Each bolt had its own target. As the final sparks trailed off, the assault branches that had been in that wave were completely torn asunder.

It had been a simple trick. He had circled around slightly to reenter the battle at a different point. He had gotten near…or more exactly right above a spot he had earlier tricked the branches into smashing into. They had tore up the ground so much that soft dirt littered it and there was practically no resistance. The branches had skimmed the ground to gain cover but were only in it partially. High rising roots and various shrubs in the area covered their path well enough. He had summoned the lightning a bit away to avoid detection. He doubted the plants would have been able to stop them no matter where they had come from however. He was more interested in furthering his plan. He masked his use of the branches to make crevices before hand with evasive techniques. These bolts traveling on the ground had widened those spots considerably. Rayo set a trap by doing an elaborate defense. The ground was still soft though. Anything that plodded into it, like an oversized limb of a spider that might touch on the ground or any other beast, could find itself momentarily stuck. He wished for Armina to be here so he could communicate his plan with telepathy but this would have to do. If Gingitsune could lure whatever she fought a bit in this direction, its weight would force the ground around it to collapse and trap itself. Her light feet would fail to do that so she was safe from it.

Gingitsune faced her opponent, steeling herself against the many-eyed spider though it's sight made her skin squirm. The rusty blade in her hand was slightly heavy, and she balanced her grip before springing forward from her cover to attack.

Her first slash caught the spider on one of its legs and the creature let out a shrill, inhuman scream of pain before lashing out. Gingitsune managed to duck and throw herself sideways to avoice the stinging spike of the 'foot.' The creature was just an overgrown spider, it wasn't an actual monster, but an earthly creature of pure instinct. Gingitsune gaze went from the wound she had made on it's foreleg to the clamping steel jaws.

What would they feel like?

Ignoring her own thoughts, Gingitsune went forward for another hit, but this time was trpped by one of the legs of the spider, sending her sprawling forward, she rolled away just in time to avoid the jaws but the spider wasn't giving her any chance to get up. She kept rolling more and more into the deep tangle of hairy, lanky legs. With a quick thrust she managed to cut off part of the sharp limb, and finally scrambled to her feet.

Her eyes scanned the creature and came to the quick conclusion that there was really only one option for quickly defeating it.

Her stomach fluttered as she went forward, gripping the sword with both hands for greater power, and coming forward. She ducked under a sprawling leg and fell to the ground, rolling around in the mass of legs until she found herself directly underneath the creature. She lifted the blade upwards, and sliced the belly of the beast from one end to the other, rolling sideways and out of the spider's range to avoid the final struggle.

She stood up as soon as she had put some distance between them and, grimacing, tried to wipe of the black tarry fluids of the spider which had stained her clothing.

The spider gave another shrill, unearthly scream and the clearing was bathed in a blindingly bright light. Shielding her eyes, Gingi saw the spider split in half, and from its dark center came a bright and firey bird.

The Phoenix.

It was as it was before, except that it now had no mass, just a blazing fire, and it flew directly at Gingitsune, passing through her body and leaving a strange sensation. It passed upwards and flew through the tree branches, dispersing the forest wuntil te nature light of the sun forced it's way through and cast soft luminescense on the ground.

Gingitsune rubbed her eyes and found that her entire appearance had altered. Her hair, instead of a simple ponytail, was now collected into a large bun at the side of her head in a purple net, from it came a long side pony-tail that curled softly at the ends, and tied to the bun with dark purple ribbon. Her gauntlet gloves had shortened, and peeped out side of detached, wide sleeves that ran from her elbow, slashed in half, and came down her arm over her hand like a medieval gown's. Her dress and obi remained the same, added to them was a dark cape which was attached to a heavy, white gold and amethyst necklace and balanced lightly atop her shoulders. A velvet choker adorned her throat with a small, shiny amethyst attached to the bottom.

As Gingitsune finished examining her new wardrobe, she noticed that a beautiful shining object was floating where the spider had once stood. It was her wand.

The top part curved into something resembled a short naginata blade, savagely jagged on one side, and at the other side of it emerged a much smaller, curved blade. From the smaller blade protruded small, fine spikes that resembled angular sun's rays. Between them floated a glowing orb, flashing and flcikering with all of the smoky colours of the rainbow in a dazzling display.

The handle was long, and wider around the top, wound with bandage-like purple fabric until it reached the skinnier part of the staff. Below the wound fabric was a long straight piece of metal which resembled two winding dragons with protruding wings which came out at the top. At the bottom, their two heads met as they held in their jaws the single, large amethyst which finished off the wand.

The wand was Cybele.

Gingitsune gripped the wand and the felt the power surging through her body. Exhaling softly, she turned and walked back towards her team members.

(ooc: I'll wait a little before finishing this, note: the trees were put back to rights when the phoenix flew through them, so they're defeated)

He watched the trees finally recede from the fight. It was finally over. And at the end of it all…was a new wand. Gingitsune had earned something valuable even though he didn’t see the relevance to the overall picture. It didn’t matter though…getting stronger was important. The trees were no longer threats though and the spider was vanquished.

It was time to consider the big picture. He had thought long and hard over it. When they returned…it would be to Nayru. He for one still didn’t trust it at all. Even if it was truly the AI of Nall, a fact he was not even certain of. Even so…he wasn’t entrusting his fate…to a dead guy…no matter how powerful he had been. He did die after all…that implied something was wrong with his great plans. They all seemed to plan on follow the dragon…join their paths with his. He couldn’t begrudge them that if it was there choice. That was the thing though…they all had choices. Staring off into the sky solemnly…he knew that he had made his decision.

Nighthand lept to the ground after the trees fell silent, landing hard on the flats of his feet. Remaining in a crouch for a moment, he regained his senses and slowly stood.

coating himself with fire had been a good idea from the start, allowing him to destroy the trees easily. and indeed he had. looking around himself, he saw nothing but the smouldering remains of a battlefield. a battle of a forest.

it was the ultimate in deraingement. he had used one of the ultimate elements of nature to cut down nature itself. the thought of it made him feel something, something he could not say what.

the use of the fire cloak ad drained him significantly. his mind was slower, his body aching. his eyes drooped, and he toppled over.

head pounding, he fell into a restless slumber.

-----Dream State-----

Nighthand.

Nighthand.

Nighthand, we must speak to you.

hmm? what is it?

Nighthand, there is trouble. something is going to happen. we cannot tell what, but the tides are shifting.

hay, wait a moment. i recognise you. you're that girl from the shrine, the one who's always speaking in my mind.

yes.

didn't i tell you not to do that any more?

you did.

then why are you?

because you are in danger. you are nearly out of energy. you need to learn to keep up your strength.

is this why i'm unconscious? you made me so that you could force rest on me?

we did.

well, enough! let me out now!

Nighthand, if you go out now, you may never be able to return to your own human body.

i can hold it off. i have to!

i must let you go then. i would not be able to stand against you.

damn right! now wake me up!

Suddenly the light was streaming in from behind closed eyelids. shaking his head, nighthand sat up.

a sudden pain shot through his head, making him gasp. such a headache he had never felt before.

the pain slowly vanished as he became used to it. but the stress on his mind was still there.

i hope, for your sake, that you end this soon.

"Shut Up!" Nighthand shouted at the voices in his head.

"Nighthand, are you okay?" asked Vera, breaking the silence.

"I'm fine. Leave me alone."

without waiting for an answer, nighthand stalked off into the woods. he had some thinking to do.

(OOC: sorry for the rudeness, vera. but hey, i needed someone, and i don't know who would care enough about my character to ask. also, when you guys gate out, Nighthand will return to the group. unless something else big happens. if so, then he returns then. otherwise, i'm out for a bit. major thinking and such, you know.)

Vera raised a brow after the enemies were defeated. That battle was easy for her. "Well that was easy" she said as everyone turned an eye too her with the opposite look. Soon her attention was turned too Nighthand. Walk slowly she shuffled him, trying too get him to wake. "Nighthand, are you okay?" she said softly as he opened his eyes.

"I'm fine. Leave me alone." he replied too her as he left

"That was mean." she said glaring as the evil voices returned too her head, but this time stayed dorment.

Even having made his decision, his mind was still troubled. Was it truly his best course of action? Kurai also had seemed dismal when confronted with the idea of dealing with the pepper breathed rat. Surely there were others. The problem would remain though. Not everyone would agree on things. Some would stay with Nayru and others would revolt against the beast. Splitting the group up in two would solve nothing.

Each had to choose on their own. They were comatose. They had to do what each of them felt was best. That answer would surely not be the same for all. Everyone had his or her own way of handling a situation. In battle, some would strive to keep the offensive while others would hold back to build a strong defense and fortify against all coercion. And still others would flee or make secret deals to save one self. Life was the same way as the parts that make it up. Each person is unique and needs to do what they feel is right. It wouldn’t be right to do things any other way. Being forced into something will only force people to do things they normally would not and that leaves to desertion or betrayal on the battlefield.

The group had no current leads besides what Nayru might feed them. It wasn’t serving a purpose in terms of actually doing anything. Many members of this company were at each other’s throats already. It wasn’t going anywhere and while it sat idle, it rusted and grew bitter to all around.

The group itself was a destined type. A former dead leader. They ran into trouble time and again. As Gingitsune had put it, it was like a grand play. However…what happened when the actors refused to play their assigned rolls? How was Rayo cast? He was a part of the whole group in their supposedly then noble quest. He was a thinker who would help handle any problems that he could. Would he fall or would he live, who knew? Not many stage directions were being handed out and that left him in the dark. He hated such preordained things. Nothing was truly that way. Life was never so calm or so clear. There was no clear line between good and evil, right and wrong. There were no assurances that the curtain would even close…ever.
